    Notes: We report the observation of spin relaxation of excitons in zero-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures. The spin relaxation is measured in InGaAs quantum disks by using a polarization dependent time-resolved photoluminescence method. The spin relaxation time in a zero-dimensional quantum disk is as long as 0.9 ns at 4 K, which is almost twice as long as the radiative recombination lifetime and is considerably longer than that in quantum wells. The temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time suggests the importance of exciton–acoustic phonon interaction. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Carrot somatic embryogenesis was strongly inhibited in high-cell-density cultures. This inhibition was not caused by depletion of nutrients or physical damage but by factor(s) released into the culture medium from cells during culture. A conditioned medium prepared by eliminating cells after high-cell-density culture inhibited somatic embryogenesis. The degree of inhibition increased with the amount of conditioned medium. A dialysis experiment revealed that the molecular weight of the inhibiting factor(s) was below 3,500. We also found that the conditioned medium contained a high-molecular-weight factor(s), which stimulated somatic embryogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract The Y chromosome (Yaa gene) from autoimmune BXSB mice has been shown to be responsible for the acceleration of autoimmune symptoms when transferred to MRL/lpr mice. We examined the pathological, serological and immunological characteristics of MRL/lpr.Yaa mice and the suppressive effect of cyclophosphamide (CP) on the mice. MRL/lpr.Yaa mice spontaneously developed a massive lymphadenopathy characterized by hypergammaglobulinemia, the presence of several autoantibodies, and autoimmune disease. In MRL/lpr.Yaa mice, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 production in concanavalin A (Con A)-stimulated splenocytes were about 10-fold lower than in BALB/c mice at 5 weeks of age.The concentrations of these lymphokines remained low until the mice were 16 weeks of age. The production of IFN-γ and IL-6 in 16 week old MRL/lpr.Yaa mice was about 4- and 2-fold lower, respectively, though these levels were similar in both strains at 8 weeks of age. It was found that this dysregulation of T cell function was almost identical to that in MRL/lpr mice. Administration of CP to MRL/lpr.Yaa mice ameliorated nephritis, and suppressed production of autoantibodies and the accumulation of abnormal T cells. CP also significantly elevated the production of lymphokines. These findings suggest that an abnormality of T cell function may contribute to the autoimmune pathogenesis of MRL/lpr.Yaa mice and that CP probably ameliorates autoimmune disease by improving the T cell functions.

    Notes: Abstract. Complex eigenphases and mixing parameters for elastic n-d scattering above the breakup threshold are calculated. Faddeev equations are solved precisely using the Bonn-B NN potential. We point out defects in existing N-d phase-shift analyses. Peculiar energy variations in the mixing parameter η3/2− are shown to have no effect on observables and are simply an artifact of the S-matrix parametrization. It is shown, that the n-d analyzing power A y depends most sensitively on the three eigenphases δ1/2 3/2/1, δ2/3 3/2/1, and δ5/2 3/2/1, which again are predominantly generated by the 3 P j NN force components. Therefore a determination of those eigenphases from experimental data would help to constrain the 3 P j NN forces.
