Notes: Summary Formalin-fixed paraffin sections of 55 consecutive bilateral vestibular schwannomas in 46 patients with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), and 50 patients with unilateral vestibular schwannomas were investigated immunohistochemically with the monoclonal antibody MIB 1 directed against recombinant parts of Ki-67 antigen. The immunohistochemical staining was carried out on dewaxed microwave oven-processed paraffin sections of formalin-fixed tumour tissues. The labelling index (LI) obtained was compared to clinical and histological findings in both groups. There was no correlation between the LI and age of the patients, tumour size, or histological type of tumour (Antoni A or B). Vestibular schwannomas in NF2 showed higher LI than unilateral vestibular schwannomas: the maximal LI found per section (LI max) ranged from 0.4 to 17.6% (mean, 2.7%) in NF2 schwannomas, and from 0 to 9% (mean, 2.2%) in unilateral schwannomas. These differences may express immunohistochemically some clinical and morphological differences between bilateral and unilateral vestibular schwannomas.

Notes: Summary Microscopic sections obtained from paraffin blocks of 30 consecutive neurilemomas stored in 1989 were investigated immunohistochemically with the new monoclonal antibody MIB 1 directed against recombinant parts of Ki-67 antigen. The immunohistochemical staining was carried out on dewaxed microwave-oven-processed paraffin sections of formalin-fixed tumour tissues. The labelling index (LI) obtained was below 1% in 21 cases, 1–3% in 7 cases and more than 3% in 2 cases. There was no correlation between the LI and the age of the patients or the tumour size. The major advantage of MIB 1 over previous immunohistochemical methods is its usefullness in long preserved sections which are ideal for retrospective studies.

Notes: Abstract Darwin pointed out that plants with vertical inflorescences are likely to be outcrossed if the inflorescence is acropetalous (flowers from the bottom up), the flowers are protandrous (pollen is dispersed before stigmas are receptive), and pollinators move upward on the inflorescence. This syndrome is common in species pollinated by bees and flies, and very few exceptions are known. We investigated flowering phenology and pollinator behavior in Besseya bullii (Scrophulariaceae) and found that it did not fit Darwin's syndrome. The vertical inflorescence was acropetalous but the flowers were distinctly protogynous, so flowers with newly receptive stigmas appeared on the inflorescence above those with dehiscing anthers. A number of small insects visited B. bullii; bees in the family Halictidae (Augochlorella striata and Dialictus spp.) were most common. When insects moved between gender phases within inflorescences, they moved up more often than down (61% versus 39% of observations, respectively) but this difference was only marginally significant. Most visits were to male-phase flowers only, and this preference was more pronounced for pollen-foraging insects than for nectar-foraging insects. B. bullii was self-compatible, so its flowering characteristics potentially could result in considerable self-pollination. However, an average of 38% of the lowermost flowers opened before any pollen was available on the same inflorescence; these “solo females” had a high probability of outcrossing (though fruit set was relatively low in the bottom portion of the inflorescence). Upper flowers may also be outcrossed because downward insect movement was not uncommon. Therefore protogyny in B. bullii may not necessarily lead to more selfing than would protandry.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This case report refers to two patients with the rare entity of an extraneural metastasizing central nervous system tumor. The first patient presented with ipsilateral cervical lymph node metastases 4 years after a diagnostic biopsy and 2 years after removal of an anaplastic oligodendroglioma, respectively. The origin of the metastases was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The second case described was found in a 26-year-old female who had suffered from a spinal cord pilocytic astrocytoma in infancy and been treated by surgery and radiotherapy. On postmortem examination, transformation to a primitive neuroectodermal tumor was found. Morphological and immunohistochemical features of the metastases were exactly identical with those of the primary tumors in both cases. The pathomechanisms of metastasizing CNS tumors are discussed with reference to the reasons why such cases are so rarely observed. The incidence of remote metastases and differences depending on tumor type are estimated. No relation to malignancy grade can be detected.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Oncocytomas are rare epithelial tumors of the major and minor salivary glands. Reported is an oncocytoma of the lateral wall of the left nasal cavity in a 60-year-old man. Because of its locally invasive character, with rupture into the left nasal cavity and partial dedifferentiation with loss of typically oncocytic features, we classified the tumor as oncocytoma of low malignant potential.

Notes: Abstract It is shown experimentally that in the soft X-ray region a large circular dichroism in the photoelectron angular distribution (CDAD) exists for both valence orbitals and core levels of CO molecules adsorbed on Pd(111). From theoretical consideration it follows that in the case of a spherically symmetric ground state wave function, like the 1σ and 2σ orbitals of CO, CDAD appears due to the lack of spherical symmetry in the final state. For carbonK-shell experimental results are compared to model calculations. Investigations at the Pd core levels proved that CDAD does also arise in X-ray photo-emission from non-magnetic crystals.
