    Notes: Many analyses of belief in the soul ignore the soul in the words. Dislocations of concepts occur when words are divorced from their normal implications. The ‘soul’ is sometimes the dislocated utterer of such words. Pictures, including pictures of the soul leaving the body, may mislead us by suggesting applications which they, in fact, do not have. But pictures of the soul may enter people's lives as desires for a temporal eternity. Contrasting conceptions of immortality and eternal life depend on a willingness to say farewell to life. Atheistic denials of temporal eternities, do not appreciate these other possibilities.

    Notes: Summary Thinness at birth is associated with insulin resistance and an increased prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in adult life. As muscle is an important site of insulin resistance, and because thin babies have reduced muscle mass, thinness at birth may affect muscle structure and function and impair carbohydrate metabolism. We have therefore used 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate the bioenergetics of gastrocnemius and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles in 16 normoglycaemic women who had a low (≤ 23 kg/m3) and 9 women who had a high (〉 23 kg/m3) ponderal index at birth. In the flexor digitorum superficialis study anaerobic metabolism was stressed with a constant heavy workload. Low ponderal index subjects fatigued more rapidly (3.3 vs 5.8 min); as phosphocreatine decreased, the accompanying drop in muscle pH was less than in the high ponderal index group. In the first minute of exercise phosphocreatine fell and adenosine diphosphate rose more rapidly (p = 0.04 and 0.03, respectively). Gastrocnemius showed a similar trend late in exercise (this exercise was more oxidative, becoming more anaerobic with increasing workload). These changes were not explained by differences in body composition, muscle mass or blood flow. The findings are consistent with a decreased lactic acid and glycolytic adenosine triphosphate production in the low ponderal index group and suggest the possibility that the mechanisms which control substrate utilisation and metabolism in adult life be programmed during prenatal life.     Notes: Abstract Zinc oxide targets irradiated with high energy protons at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) contain a number of radioactive spallation products in quantities large enough to warrant recovery. This paper describes methods for recovering7Be,46Sc, and48V from such targets and offers suggestions on possible ways to recover additional isotopes. The proposed methods are based on traditional precipitation and ion exchange techniques, are readily adaptable to hot cell use, and produce no hazardous waste components. The products are obtained in moderate to high yields and have excellent radionuclidic purity.

    Notes: Abstract Copper-67 is a radioisotope with significant potential for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine. Despite its promise,67Cu has failed to make an impact in clinical nuclear medicine, primarily because it is available sporadically, and in limited quantities. Common methods of production rely on high energy proton irradiation of natural zinc targets or on induced reactions using high energy neutrons at nuclear reactors. We have evaluated alternative production methods that could provide year-round adequate supply of this isotope. Using a low energy accelerator, we have studied the production of67Cu by proton reactions on enriched70Zn. Our results indicate that it is possible to produce useful quantities of67Cu from the irradiation of enriched70Zn with protons that have energies of less than 20 MeV. Production rates are higher than currently used methods at high energy accelerators or reactors. This isotope can be made available throughout the year as a result of this research.

    Notes: Abstract Heteropolymolybdic acid species of a variety of elements bind to Sephadex (dextran cross-linked by epichlorohydrin). Solution pH can be used as a variable to influence the formation of heteropolymolybdates and thus their affinity for Sephadex. Therefore this material may be used to chromatographically separate certain elements which have been reacted with molybdate in solution. In this paper we report the measurement of distribution coefficients on Sephadex for heteropolymolybdates of As, P, Ge, Si, and Se for solutions of varying pH. We also describe the application of the technique to the recovery of32Si from proton-irradiated KCl targets and68Ge from proton-irradiated molybdenum targets.
