    Notes: Defect structures were investigated by transmission electron microscopy for GaN/Al2O3 (0001) epilayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition using a two-step process. The defect structures, including threading dislocations, partial dislocation bounding stacking faults, and inversion domains, were analyzed by diffraction contrast, high-resolution imaging, and convergent beam diffraction. GaN film growth was initiated at 600 °C with a nominal 20 nm nucleation layer. This was followed by high-temperature growth at 1080 °C. The near-interfacial region of the films consists of a mixture of cubic and hexagonal GaN, which is characterized by a high density of stacking faults bounded by Shockley and Frank partial dislocations. The near-interfacial region shows a high density of inversion domains. Above ∼0.5 μm thickness, the film consists of isolated threading dislocations of either pure edge, mixed, or pure screw character with a total density of ∼7×108 cm−2. The threading dislocation reduction in these films is associated with cubic to hexagonal transformation of the nucleation layer region during high temperature growth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary An approach for the simultaneous acquisition of HCN and HCP as well as HCN-CCH-TOCSY and HCP-CCH-TOCSY triple resonance data sets for 13C-/15N-labelled RNAs is presented. The new HCN-CCH-TOCSY scheme unambiguously links all sugar resonances to the base nitrogen. In addition, simultaneous acquisition of HCN-CCH-TOCSY and HCP-CCH-TOCSY data sets provides sequential and base-type information in a single experiment, thereby saving data acquisition time as well as providing complementary data sets that are useful in clarifying ambiguous assignments. Virtually complete sequence-specific phosphate-ribose 1H, 31P, and base 15N1,9 assignments as well as partial 13C assignments could be obtained in a single experiment for a 0.5-mM sample of a 19-mer ribonucleotide.

    Notes: Abstract Virgin cores and production fluids were obtained from seven wells, ranging in depth from 805 ft to 14 492 ft, and examined for the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) using Rosenfeld's sulfate-reducing medium modified by using crude oil in place of lactate. Cores from an additional six wells, ranging in depth from 1160 ft to 13 337 ft were tested for SRB using the modified Rosenfeld medium and API-sulfate-reducing medium. Produced waters from five of the six wells were tested also. All of the eleven produced water samples were positive for SRB while H2S production was not detected from the core samples.

    Notes: Abstract Myocytes from failing human ventricle contract and relax more slowly than those from non-failing. This has been suggested to result from the lowering of basal cyclic AMP level in failing myocardium, and the consequent withdrawal of a tonic lusitropic effect. We present data to support this hupothesis by demonstrating that the acceleration of contraction and relaxation by β-adrenoceptor stimulation is greater in myocytes from failing than nonfailing heart. This is despite the desensitisation of the inotropic effect of isorenaline in the same failing cells. Following β-adrenoceptor stimulation, speeds of contraction and relaxation are normalised in myocytes from failing heart, with final values not significantly different from non-failing.
