Notes: The spectrum of bound states of He atoms adsorbed on Ag(110) is calculated, using an interaction potential based on effective medium theory EMT for the repulsive term A exp(−bz) and the Zaremba–Kohn form for the attractive van der Waals dispersion term. The electronic charge density of the host in the selvedge region is modeled by superimposing atomic-charge densities using the Herman–Skillman tables and the prefactor A of the repulsive term is fitted to the exact ground state energy obtained from elastic He scattering data. Comparisons are made with the bound-state spectrum extracted from the measured resonances in the He scattering data and with the results of several other models used in the current literature. An assessment of the role played by higher-order dispersion contributions to the attractive potential is also included. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract High-speed videography was used to describe the initial turning movement of visually triggered escape in frogs and to compare it with the initial turn of frog prey capture behavior. These two types of turning had some general similarities, e.g. turn duration and peak velocity were positively correlated with turn angle. However, there were kinematic differences: for turns of a given angular amplitude, escape turns consistently demonstrated shorter duration and higher peak velocity than prey capture turns. There also were differences predictably matched to stimulus angles; escape turn angles were more variably related to stimulus angles. Both turning movements are believed to depend upon the optic tectum. However, given the observed differences in kinematics and spatial organization, we used lesion experiments to determine if distinct tectal efferent pathways subserve turning under each circumstance. Large unilateral lesions of the brainstem simultaneously disrupted both types of turning. However, smaller laterally placed lesions disrupted escape turning without disrupting prey capture turns. The kinematic differences in combination with the lesion results support the idea that the post-tectal circuitry for visually elicited turning movements is based upon separate descending pathways that control turning toward prey and turning away from threat.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the analysis of a finite element method for nonhomogeneous second order elliptic interface problems on smooth domains. The method consists in approximating the domains by polygonal domains, transferring the boundary data in a natural way, and then applying a finite element method to the perturbed problem on the approximate polygonal domains. It is shown that the error in the finite element approximation is of optimal order for linear elements on a quasiuniform triangulation. As such the method is robust in the regularity of the data in the original problem.

Notes: Abstract Dientamoeba fragilis, a common intestinal protozoan parasite in Canada, has been associated with diarrhoea and abdominal pain in some patients. Seroprevalence of this organism has not been reported previously. In the present study sera from three symptomatic patients, 12 age- and sexmatched controls, and 189 randomly selected healthy individuals (age 6 months to 19 years) were tested for antibodies againstDientamoeba fragilis by an indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assay. All three symptomatic patients infected withDientamoeba fragilis had positive IIF titres of 80, and all 12 matched controls had positive titres ranging 20 to 160 (geometric mean titre 48). Of the 189 healthy children, 172 (91%) were positive at a serum dilution of 1∶10 or higher. The specificity of the IIF assay was reinforced by immunoblotting 20 representative serum samples againstDientamoeba fragilis, In all 17 IIF-positive serum samples, a 39 kDa protein band ofDientamoeba fragilis was identified, the same band recognized by a mouse monoclonal antibody raised in our laboratory. Findings over a five-year period indicate thatDientamoeba fragilis was the most common protozoan, followed closely byGiardia lamblia and more distantly byCryptosporidium parvum. The high seropositivity of 91% forDientamoeba fragilis compares reasonably well with serologic data obtained by IIF and reported previously forGiardia lamblia (85.6%) andCryptosporidium parvum (86%).
