    Notes: An experimental investigation was made of GaAs and GaAs/AlAs barriers on Si for blocking injected dark current in impurity-band-conduction (IBC) infrared photodetectors. Reducing dark current would improve detector performance. Experimental results indicate that barrier heights of the order of 0.29 eV were obtained. Current versus bias behavior at temperatures ≤20 K showed successful blocking of injected electron dark current for negative applied biases in the operating range for IBC detectors. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Almost 40 years ago, it was reported that cattle-feed which had been extracted with hot trichloroethylene and then fed to calves produced renal injury and a fatal aplastic anaemia. The toxic factor was subsequently identified as S-(1,2-dichlorovinyl)-L-cysteine (DCVC). These original findings have been confirmed, a single intravenous dose of DCVC at 4 mg/kg, or 0.4 mg/kg intravenously per day administered for 10 days to calves produced aplastic anaemia, and renal injury after a single dose of 4 mg/kg. The toxicity to calves of a number of other haloalkene cysteine conjugates has been examined to ascertain whether, like DCVC, they produce bone marrow and renal injury. Intravenous administration of the N-acetyl cysteine conjugate of DCVC produced renal but not bone marrow injury at a molar equivalent dose to DCVC, indicating that the calf can deacetylate the mercapturic acid and further that sufficient chemical had reached the kidney to be a substrate for the enzyme cysteine conjugate β-lyase. However, intravenous administration of the α-methyl analogue of DCVC, which cannot undergo metabolism via the enzyme cysteine conjugate β-lyase, was without toxicity at doses about five-fold higher than DCVC. These latter findings provide strong evidence that metabolism of DCVC via the enzyme β-lyase is necessary for bone marrow and renal injury to occur. The cysteine conjugates of perchloro ethylene and hexachloro-1,3-butadiene(HCBD) when given intravenously to calves at molar equivalent doses to DCVC, or above, did not produce either bone marrow or renal injury. In contrast, intravenous administration of the cysteine conjugate of tetrafluoroethylene (TFEC) produced severe renal tubular injury in calves without affecting the bone marrow. In vitro studies with these haloalkene cysteine conjugates showed, like DCVC, that they were good substrates for calf renal cysteine conjugate β-lyase and toxic to renal cells as judged by their ability to reduce organic anion and cation transport by slices of calf renal cortex and inhibit the renal enzyme glutathione reductase. Calves were also dosed either orally or intravenously with HCBD to assess its toxicity. HCBD at higher molar equivalent doses than DCVC produced mid-zonal necrosis in the liver, renal tubular necrosis but no bone marrow injury in calves. The key findings emerging from these studies are (1) that none of the other cysteine conjugates, at molar equivalent doses to DCVC and above, produce bone marrow injury in calves, (2) TFEC produced only renal injury, suggesting that sufficient of the other conjugates had not reached the kidney for metabolism by β-lyase to produce cytotoxicity and (3) that HCBD itself is more toxic than its cysteine or mercapturic acid conjugate, suggesting that pharmacokinetics and disposition are important factors in determining the toxicity of these conjugates to calves. Further studies are needed to understand the basis for the selective toxicity of DCVC to the bone marrow of calves.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the cannabinoid and cholinergic systems impair working memory through a common mechanism. This hypothesis was tested by examining whether the cannabinoid antagonist SR141716A would ameliorate radial-arm performance deficits caused by either the naturally occurring cannabinoid, Δ9-THC, or scopolamine, a muscarinic antagonist. In addition, we evaluated whether the cholinesterase inhibitor, physostigmine, would prevent Δ9-THC-induced impairment of spatial memory. Finally, because the locomotor suppressive effects of cannabinoids may decrease radial arm choice accuracy independent of a direct effect on memory, we examined the impact of increasing the intertrial error on radial arm choice accuracy. As previously reported, Δ9-THC impaired maze performance (ED50=3.0 mg/kg). Increasing the intertrial interval from 5 s to 30 s resulted in a three-fold increase in the amount of time required to complete the maze without affecting choice accuracy. Importantly, SR141716A prevented Δ9-THC-induced deficits in radial-arm choice accuracy in a dose-dependent manner (AD50=2.4 mg/kg); however, the cannabinoid antagonist failed to improve the disruptive effects of scopolamine. Conversely, physostigmine failed to improve performance deficits produced by Δ9-THC. These data provide strong evidence that Δ9-THC impairs working memory through direct action at cannabinoid receptors. Moreover, these results suggest that scopolamine and Δ9-THC do not impair spatial memory in a common serial pathway, though they may converge on a third neurochemical system.

    Notes: Abstract Crystallographically orientated samples of synthetic optical-grade colourless quartz with high chemical purity and low dislocation density together with synthetic gem-grade amethyst with high Fe-concentration and ca. 250 H/106 Si (“dry”) or 600 H/106 Si (“wet”) and with very high dislocation densities were irradiated using TEM. Samples of cuts perpendicular (〈c〉-cuts) and parallel (〈X〉-cuts) to the c-axis, that were as-grown or pretreated for 5 days at 820 K on air or under p(H2O)=108 Pa were prepared. Characterization methods used include AAS, FTIR, Raman-spectroscopy, X-ray-topography, REM, TEM in SAED and bright-field mode and polarized light microscopy. Radiolysis was carried out in TEM from 10 to 300 K with 100 kV and from 70–850 K (low-high-transition temperature of quartz) with 200 kV. Irradiation damage was investigated by decay of Kikuchi-lines or of Bragg reflections in SAED and in bright-field mode by development of strain contrast centres and of noncrystalline volume areas. Special preparates where the irradiation damage was of microscopic dimensions were investigated using Raman-spectroscopy. Radiolysis of quartz is able to proceed at 10 K with measurable velocity. The required electron dose for a standardized irradiation damage decreases with increasing temperature. At ca. 500 K it goes through a minimum and then increases steadily up to ca. 700 K. From there the increase is steep until ca. 820 K where it culminates sharply, showing strong fluctuations until 850 K. The 〈X〉-cuts in the as-grown state show significantly higher irradiation damage sensitivity than 〈E1〉-cuts. Dry or hydrothermal preheating increases the overall sensitivity of irradiation damage and levels out the orientation differences. The high Fe-concentrations in amethyst in comparison with very pure quartz have no detectable influence on the damage sensitivity. This is also true for different water concentrations independently from the ratio of silanole-group to molecular water. Sample thinning by ion etching with different gun currents produces differences in irradiation sensitivity. Thinning by crushing produces samples with sensitivities comparable with ion-etching at low gun current.

    Notes: Abstract Low-frequency Raman spectra were recorded along the transition front of uniaxially cold drawn High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) samples with a Raman microscope instrument. The high spatial resolution capacity of the technique allows to analyze the variation of the Longitudinal Acoustic Mode (LAM) along the transition zone between the isotropic structure and the oriented one. The evolution of the LAM over the transition zone was followed by measuring the LAM intensity, bandwidth and position as a function of the distance along the transition front. The LAMs are affected by the stretching process before the transition zone is reached and the lamellar structure was found to be totally disrupted before the fibrillar structure is formed. Whereas the LAM intensity decreases gradually along the transition region, the bandshape and peak frequency do not change significantly, indicating that the distribution of fully planar zigzag segments in the remaining lamella, structure is not really affected during the deformation process. The concentration of lamella, which still remain dimensionally intact, decreases gradually along the transition zone up to the stage where the structure is getting fibrillar.

    Notes: Abstract This paper argues that evaluations of basic research are best carried out using a range of indicators. After setting out the reasons why assessments of government-funded basic research are increasingly needed, we examine the multi-dimensional nature of basic research. This is followed by a conceptual analysis of what the different indicators of basic research actually measure. Having discussed the limitations of various indicators, we describe the method of converging partial indicators used in several SPRU evaluations. Yet although most of those who now use science indicators would agree that a combination of indicators is desirable, analysis of a sample ofScientometrics articles suggests that in practice many continue to use just one or two indicators. The paper also reports the results of a survey of academic researchers. They, too, are strongly in favour of research evaluations being based on multiple indicators combined with peer review. The paper ends with a discussion as to why multiple indicators are not used more frequently.

    Notes: Terpolymer composition estimation with an established equation has been found to give results that vary with the feed monomer ratio substitution pattern used. A new copolymer equation has been derived that overcomes this difficulty to give the same composition results regardless of the order of monomer substitution. The new equation also gives comparable or better agreement with experimentally determined copolymer compositions than obtained by use of the established Alfrey-Goldfinger terpolymer equation. In addition, this new terpolymer equation demonstrates a versatility not shown by the present terpolymer equations in that it can be readily adapted by inspection to enable estimation of copolymer compositions for two- or for four-component polymer systems. It is also readily adaptable for copolymers with more than four components, and may also be valid for composition estimation of these because of the derivation method used, although it has not as yet been possible to test this possibility. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
