    Forming Textured Microstructures via the Gelcasting Technique (1997)

    Notes: Crystallographically textured samples of iron titanate were produced by gelcasting in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Texture was assessed by measuring X-ray pole figures on samples that were cast in different orientations relative to the applied field. Specimens in this study exhibit fiber-type texture, with the b-axes aligned parallel to the applied field. Peak texture strengths were on the order of 3 and 48 multiples of a random distribution (MRD) when processed in a 3.2 and 8.4 T magnetic field, respectively. This study shows that a combination of gelcasting with magnetic-field-assisted processing provides a convenient method for fabricating samples which can be used to study the role of crystallographic texture on the physical properties of polycrystalline ceramics, e.g., their elastic or fracture behavior.

    Notes: We report on the measurement of methyl radical (CH3) densities in a low-density supersonic arcjet plasma used in the synthesis of diamond films. Single-pass, high-sensitivity ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectroscopy has been employed to study the X(2A2″)→B(2A1′) transition of the methyl radical near 216 nm. The minimum detectable CH3 density is found to be ∼4×1013 cm−3, which corresponds to a fractional absorption of 2×10−3 at a gas temperature of 1200 K. The dependence of the measured methyl column density on pressure and CH4/H2 flow ratio has been studied. The results are used to revise our previous estimates of the reactive "sticking" coefficient for CH3, and we now find that it is of order 10−2 under conditions where we have previously documented the growth of high quality diamond films. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method of providing asymmetric feedback in the triangular ring laser structure was devised through the simple alterations of the waveguide shape. Two kinds of alterations were designed and implemented, one being the "optical diode," the other being the tapered waveguide. Unidirectional operation was achieved for the ring lasers, with a single-beam slope efficiency of 0.23 W/A, which was the highest single-beam slope efficiency reported for semiconductor ring lasers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This study uses information collected on two occasions from a probability sample of families with 8- to 12-year-old children (N= 718) participating in a general population study in 1983 and follow-up in 1987. It focuses on the association between maternal depressive symptoms and emotional disorder in children and adolescents, taking into consideration the influences of informant rating errors, contextual variables (economic disadvantage and family dysfunction), and child gender. Covariance structure analysis revealed a strong association between maternal depressive symptoms in girls (β= .59 in 1983 and β= .39 in 1987) but not in boys. This association is independent of the impact of contextual variables and the treatment of teacher rating errors. Among adolescent boys, maternal depressive symptoms are correlated with mother rating errors, suggesting the possible presence of maternal bias.

    Notes: Aqueous cluster studies have lead to a reassessment of the electronic properties of bulk water, such as band gap, conduction band edge, and vacuum level. Using results from experimental hydrated electron cluster studies, the location of the conduction band edge relative to the vacuum level (often called the V0 value) in water has been determined to be −0.12 eV≤V0≤0.0 eV, which is an order of magnitude smaller than most experimental values in the literature. With V0=−0.12 eV and making use of the calculated solvation energy of OH in water, the band gap of water is determined to be 6.9 eV. Again, this is smaller than many literature estimates. In the course of this work, it is shown that due to water's ability to reorganize about charge (1) photoemission thresholds of water or anionic defects in water do not determine the vacuum level, and (2) there is almost no probability of accessing the bottom of the conduction band of water with a vertical/optical process from water's valence band. The results are presented in an energy diagram for bulk water which shows the utility of exploring the conduction band of water as a function of solvent polarization. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    A Thalamic Contribution to Arousal-induced, Non-photic Entrainment of the Circadian Clock of the Syrian Hamster (1997)

    Notes: It is well established that the circadian clock of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) is entrained by light. More recently, the potent effects of arousing, non-photic cues on the clock have been recognized. The neural mediators of non-photic entrainment are yet to be identified. To examine the contribution of the thalamic intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) and its NPY-immunopositive projection, the geniculo-hypothalamic tract to non-photic entrainment by arousal, male Syrian hamsters received lesions of the IGL (IGLX) which ablated NPY-immunoreactivity in the SCN. Their circadian responses to both photic and non-photic cues were then tested. Lesions resulted in a delay in the timing of activity onset following lights out, but had no effect on the behavioural or cellular circadian responses to phase-advancing light pulses presented at circadian time (CT) CT19 (where CT12 represents the time of activity onset). Injection with a benzodiazepine (chlordiazepoxide, 100 mg/kg) at CT6 suppressed wheel-running, increased general locomotion of intact controls and induced large phase advances of the circadian rhythm of wheel-running. Chlordiazepoxide also inhibited wheel-running in lesioned animals, but there was no significant increase in general locomotion and the lesioned animals did not phase advance. Serial arousal by injection of saline at intervals of 23.5 h for 6 days entrained the circadian rhythm of wheel-running of intact hamsters and was associated with an increase in general locomotor activity. Entrainment by serial arousal was abolished by IGLX. However, the lesioned animals did show a clear behavioural response to every presentation of the non-photic cue. These results show that the IGL is a necessary component of the neural pathways mediating both arousal- and benzodiazepine-induced non-photic entrainment.

    Notes: A holistic, integrative and synergistic performance model is defined by inter-firm variables represented as economic rates of return for both economic and organizational factors. These variables are used to examine performance variance and their economic contribution to firm profitability. An extensive literature review has been conducted to discover the commonality of underlying constructs and themes within the research stream on organizational performance. An analysis of the data suggests that there exists a set of common variables to explain organizational performance variance. Builds on the results of an earlier study that indicates organizational factors explain almost twice as much variance in profit rates as do economic factors. Proposes a systemic framework on which to partition the economic contribution of these interdependent determinant factors of organizational performance.

    Notes: Uses information gathered from the advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) literature to develop an integrated conceptual framework for effectively planning and implementing these systems. Then examines the efficacy of this framework by investigating the relationship between adoption of various advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), the way that firms plan for and implement them and their eventual performance. A detailed survey instrument was administered to a cross-section of manufacturing firms in the USA to collect the required data. The results of this investigation indicate that the rate of adoption for integrated technologies was higher among firms that adopted more extensive formal planning approaches. In addition, these firms were found to be outperforming other firms. Also provides managerial and research implications of these and the other findings of this study.

    Notes: Pricing has tended to be the least creative element of marketing strategy, despite the fact that evidence from successful firms points strongly to the integral role of pricing in performance. Suggests that effective pricing has much to gain from an understanding of the entrepreneurial process, and its dimensions: innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-assumption. Because firms today operate in increasingly turbulent environments, a reluctance to be entrepreneurial in pricing could lead to stagnation or even demise. Also provides a checklist for practising managers to use to determine the extent of entrepreneurial pricing behaviour within their firms.
