Notes: Abstract This essay distinguishes two broad groups - psychological constructivists and social constructivists - but focusses upon the second of these, although it is stressed that there is great ’within group‘ variation. More than half of the paper is devoted to general ’clearing of the ground‘, during which the reasons for the growing acrimony in the debates between social constructivists and their opponents are assessed, an important consequence of these debates for education is discussed, and an examination is carried out of the radical social constructivist tendency to make strong and exciting but untenable claims which are then backed away from (a tendency which is documented by a close reading of the early pages in Bloor‘s classic book). The last portion of the essay focuses upon social constructivist accounts of the causes of belief in science - the more radical of which denegrate the role of warranting reasons, and which give an exalted place to quasi-anthropological or sociological studies of scientific communities.

Notes: Abstract Israel Scheffler's book Science and Subjectivity (1967) was prescient: His criticisms of attacks on the traditional notions of objectivity and truth that underlie modern science are still relevant nearly thirty years later, when postmodernism and some varieties of feminist epistemology are winning many adherents. Two aspects of Scheffler's book are singled out for discussion – his philosophical style, which is marked by careful, well-developed, and detailed argument (in contrast to many contemporary writers in education who have postmodernist leanings, who merely make assertions about objectivity and so forth); and the actual content of the positions for which he argues.

Notes: Abstract The use of β-spodumene (Li2O·Al2O3·4SiO2) has been investigated as a liquid-phase sintering aid for the densification of mullite processed from fumed silica and ESP (alumina) dust. XRD, DTA, SEM and Vickers indentation were used to characterize the effect of spodumene on the phase relations, sintering behaviour, microstructure and mechanical properties of mullite. The results show that the presence of spodumene significantly reduces the porosity, improves the sintering behaviour and enhances the formation of mullite at 1550°C. Spodumene-modified mullite ceramics also have better physical and mechanical properties.

Notes: Summary A simple and rugged SPE method for the determination of tetracycline (TC), minocycline (MC) and demeclocycline (DCC) in porcine serum by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed. The spiked serum sample was pretreated with 2% phosphoric acid followed by a simple and rugged solid-phase extraction procedure using the OasisTM HLB extraction cartridges. High and reproducible recoveries were obtained even though the cartridges were run dry. The extracted sample analytes were injected onto a Waters SymmetryShieldTM RP8 column. The mobile phase was a simple volatile solution containing 0.1% TFA, 2% methanol and 7% acetonitrile in Water. The antibiotics were detected at 350 nm. The calibration curves were linear from 2.0 to 25.0 μg mL−1 of TC and MC with DCC as the internal standard at a concentration of 25.0 μg mL−1. For six replicate analyses, the average recoveries of TC and MC from porcine serum sample fortified at the level of 2.5 μg mL−1 were 96.1% with 1.3% RSD and 101% with 0.54% RSD; at level of 0.5 μg mL−1 the average recoveries were 88% with 1.6% RSD and 97.8% with 1.4% RSD.
