    Notes: A miniature-cavity realization of the cavity ring-down concept, which permits extension of the technique to spectroscopy of surfaces, thin films, liquids, and, potentially, solids, is explored using a wave-optics model. The novel spectrometer design incorporates a monolithic, total-internal-reflection-ring cavity of regular polygonal geometry with at least one convex facet to induce stability. Evanescent waves generated by total-internal reflection probe absorption by matter in the vicinity of the cavity. Optical radiation enters or exits the resonator by photon tunneling, which permits precise control of input and output coupling. The broadband nature of total-internal reflection circumvents the narrow bandwidth restriction imposed by dielectric mirrors in conventional gas-phase cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Following a general discussion of design criteria, calculations are presented for square and octagonal cavity geometries that quantify intrinsic losses and reveal an optimal cavity size for each geometry. Calculated absorption spectra for the NO3 radical from 450 to 750 nm in a nitric acid solution are presented to demonstrate bandwidth and sensitivity.

    Notes: A powerful, compact, and repetitive flash x-ray system based on a cable transformer technology powered by ceramic capacitors in a Blumlein-like configuration has been developed. Open circuit voltages in excess of 100 kV can be achieved while commutation occurs at low voltage (〈20 kV). The x-ray emission from a low impedance x-ray diode with a hollow cathode configuration was observed under a wide range of experimental conditions. The critical parameters limiting the flash x-ray performances are mainly the pressure in the x-ray diode and the anode–cathode space. This true table top device is able to produce doses up to 1 R per shot, measured at the output window, of x-rays between 5 and 100 keV. The pulse widths were about 20 ns and the maximum repetition rate was about 60 Hz. Operation is possible in air or in other gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H2, N2) at pressures varying from 10−3 mbar for xenon to about 1 mbar for helium. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Purpose This study compared the effects of a combination of a topical application of resin/NaF mixture and holmium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (HO:YAG) laser energy with untreated control sites for their resistance to acid destruction/mechanical challenges of root surfaces adjacent to restorative margins.Materials and Methods Forty-eight extracted human teeth were prepared for restorations with coronal margins in enamel and the apical margins on root surfaces. Four types of restorative materials were used. One half of the restorative/root surface margins were treated with an application of nonfilled resin/fluoride mixture and holmium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser irradiation; the remaining portion served as the untreated control for each tooth. Acid (10% formic) and mechanical (air sandblaster) challenges were used to test the effects of these treated sites to their controls and to other types of restorative/root surface margins. The depth of root surface loss within 0 to 2 mm apical from the restorative margins was measured and evaluated after 24, 48, and 72 hours of acid exposures.Results The measurements of tooth loss for the 24- and 48-hour acid-exposure cycles were subjected to statistical analysis (ANOVA) using a paired t test for the variables. The variables, depth of tooth surface loss for the control sites was compared with the depth of loss of the treated sites on opposing sides of each tooth. The depth of tooth surface loss for the control sites had an average mean of 0.35 (0.25) mm for the 24-hour acid exposures, with the opposing treated sides having a mean of 0.053 (0.05) mm (significant at the 0.05 level). The 48-hour acid-exposure results showed significant increased tooth loss for the control sites, but minimum additional loss on the treated sites. The control sites showed an average mean of 1.16 (0.24) mm and a mean of 0.095 (0.103) mm for the treated areas, significant at the 0.05 level. No measurements were made for the 72-hour cycle groups of composite and amalgam alloy restorations because of the loss of most of the filling materials in the control sites. The control groups of crowns showed an average mean loss of 2.06 (0.37) mm with only 0.20 (0.19) mm surface loss for the treated sites. The paired t test for variables indicated no significant differences of tooth surface loss between various types of restorative margins used in this study.Conclusions HO:YAG laser energy irradiation after application of resin/NaF to restorative margins and adjacent areas showed a significant increased resistance to acid/mechanical destruction on cementum-dentin root surfaces. The integrity of the restorative/dentin margins were maintained after extended exposures to formic acid and mechanical challenges.

    Notes: Spontaneous Arrhythmic Death. Ventricular arrhythmias and the proclivity for sudden death have been identified in German shepherd dogs. This disorder is inherited, and affected animals can he consistently produced from an established colony. The arrhythmias are most prevalent in young dogs between 22 and 26 weeks of age, with death most frequent at this same age. Death occurs most frequently during presumed sleep or at rest after exercise or excitement. The QT interval is not prolonged; however, more frequent notching of the T wave exists in affected dogs compared to control dogs. Polymorphic rapid nonsustained ventricular tachycardia occurs most frequently following long RR intervals. Accordingly, perturhations that decrease the heart rate or enhance sinus arrhythmia increase the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias. Because the arrhythmias are age, behavior, and heart rate dependent, the autonomic nervous system may play a role in their generation. As determined by metaiodohenzylguanidine scintigraphy and immunocytochemical staining of tyrosine hydroxylase, cardiac sympathetic innervation is regionally deficient in affected dogs. Evidence suggests that initiation of the ventricular arrhythmias is caused by early after depolarization (EAD)-induced triggered activity originating from left ventricular Purkinje fibers. Alpha1-adrenergic stimulation provokes EADs in the Purkinje fibers and ventricular arrhythmias in the dogs. The development of EADs may be related to heterogeneity of repolarizing currents (Ito in particular) in affected dogs. From this canine model of spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias, the opportunity exists to investigate the interplay between abnormal development of cardiac innervation and the genesis of lethal ventricular arrhythmias.

    Notes: Two hundred seventy-one patients with a recent acute coronary event underwent pain tolerance testing using the tourniquet test. Baseline ambulatory and exercise electrocardiography, and stress thallium scintigraphy were performed, and patients were followed prospectively for a mean of 33 ± 8 months for the occurrence of unstable angina, nonfatal myocardial infarction (Ml), or cardiac death.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsPatients with lower tolerance to somatic pain were significantly older (P = 0.001), had more clinical angina (P = 0.04), and on multivariate analysis had poorer exercise tolerance (P = 0.002) than those with higher pain tolerance. Low and high pain tolerance patients demonstrated similar degrees of myocardial ischemia on noninvasive testing and had similar cardiac event rates (death, nonfatal Ml, or unstable angina) during the follow-up period.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsDespite demonstrating a similar frequency of myocardial ischemia and similar prognosis as patients with high pain tolerance, individuals with low pain tolerance were more likely to experience clinical symptoms and functional impairment, providing evidence that individual differences in somatic pain tolerance influence the symptomatic expression of coronary disease.

    Notes: Abstract: Tryptophan hydroxylase, the initial and rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin, is inactivated by the nitric oxide generators sodium nitroprusside, diethylamine/nitric oxide complex, and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine. Physiological concentrations of tetrahydrobiopterin, the natural and endogenous cofactor for the hydroxylase, significantly enhance the inactivation of the enzyme caused by each of these nitric oxide generators. The substrate tryptophan does not have this effect. The chemically reduced (tetrahydro-) form of the pterin is required for the enhancement, because neither biopterin nor dihydrobiopterin is effective. The 6S-isomer of tetrahydrobiopterin, which has little cofactor efficacy for tryptophan hydroxylase, does not enhance enzyme inactivation as does the natural 6R-isomer. A number of synthetic, reduced pterins share with tetrahydrobiopterin the ability to enhance nitric oxide-induced inactivation of tryptophan hydroxylase. The tetrahydrobiopterin effect is not prevented by agents known to scavenge hydrogen peroxide, superoxide radicals, peroxynitrite anions, hydroxyl radicals, or singlet oxygen. On the other hand, cysteine partially protects the enzyme from both the nitric oxide-induced inactivation and the combined pterin/nitric oxide-induced inactivation. These results suggest that the tetrahydrobiopterin cofactor enhances the nitric oxide-induced inactivation of tryptophan hydroxylase via a mechanism that involves attack on free protein sulfhydryls. Potential in vivo correlates of a tetrahydrobiopterin participation in the inactivation of tryptophan hydroxylase can be drawn to the neurotoxic amphetamines.

    Notes: The tolerance of the expected read-back signal of spin valve giant magnetoresistance based structures to varying deposition and process conditions are described. We determine if spin valves can be produced reliably, and evaluate which thicknesses and properties are most critical. First, the dependence of spin valve properties on layer thickness are experimentally determined. Next, the variation of read-back signal and transfer curve characteristics with spin valve properties is calculated from micromagnetic modeling. Finally, these are convolved with the expected reproducibility of layer thickness to obtain an effective "yield" of structures within 10% of the mean amplitude. We find that spin valves can be reliably deposited, with "yields" well in excess of 90% likely. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of hydrogen on strontium bismuth tantalate (SrBi2Ta2O9; SBT) ferroelectric capacitors is investigated. Using several analytical techniques such as x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, Auger electron, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, the structural and compositional changes in the ferroelectric film are studied as a function of annealing gas and temperature. The mechanism for hydrogen induced damage to the capacitor is identified. Measurements show that the hydrogen induces both structural and compositional changes in the ferroelectric film. Hydrogen reacts with the bismuth oxide to form bismuth and the reduced bismuth diffuses out of the SBT film causing the electrodes to peel. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The synthesis of Eu(III)- and Tb(III)-doped yttrium oxide phosphor powders by supercritical CO2-assisted aerosolization and pyrolysis (at 1010 °C) from aqueous solutions of Y(NO3)3, Eu(NO3)3, and Tb(NO3)3 is presented. Dense, submicron aerosols are formed by contacting aqueous solutions of the precursor metal nitrates with supercritical CO2 at 1500 psi, and decompressing the mixture through a restrictor nozzle into a heated tube. X-ray diffraction data indicate that the powders are crystalline, and consist of a single phase. Scanning electron microscope shows that they are spherical in morphology and less than 1 μm in size with average diameters of ∼0.2 μm. The cathodoluminescence intensity of the Y1.91Eu0.09O3 powders, annealed at 1200 °C for 1 h, is more than twice greater than that of the industrial standard (P56, 3–10 μm in diameter) phosphor. The phosphors synthesized by this method are promising candidates for use in high-resolution low-voltage flat panel displays. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A single blind 30 day study compared the reduction of plaque and gingivitis for the Hapika® Powerbrush to the Interplak® ultra 10 tuft. A longitudinal parallel group design was utilized and screening evaluation was performed to determine patient eligibility prior to study enrollment. 66 subjects were entered into the study and assigned to 1 of 2 groups, each using one of the toothbrushes. At baseline, subjects received an oral soft tissue exam, a dental hard tissue exam, and were scored by the Lobene modification of the Löe and Silness gingival index (GI). Plaque was then disclosed and scored both pre and post brushing using the modified Turesky plaque/debris examination and an interproximal bleeding examination was performed post-brushing. On days 15 and 30, after an oral soft tissue and GI examination, plaque was graded by the Modified Turesky plaque/debris exam. Subjects then brushed and were graded by the Modified Turesky plaque/debris examination and an interproximal bleeding index examination. The results showed that both brushes provided a similar change in clinical indices. All produced a statistically significant reduction from baseline to day 30 for the gingival index (26.5-29.1%), the bleeding index (13.8-24.1%), and the plaque index (16.9-19.4%), A comparison of pre and post brushing scores for the plaque index at 30 showed that both brushes reduced plaque similarly with a statistically significant reduction (P〈0.05) from their pre-brushing plaque index scores at all time periods.
