Notes: Abstract Let {S n} n≥0 be a random walk on the line. We give criteria for the existence of a nonrandom sequence n i → ∞ for which $$S_{n_i } \xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ respectively $$S_{n_i } /n_i \xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ We thereby obtain conditions for ∞ to be a strong limit point of {S n} or {S n /n}. The first of these properties is shown to be equivalent to $$S_{T(a_i )} \xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ for some sequence a i→ ∞, where T(a) is the exit time from the interval [−a,a]. We also obtain a general equivalence between $$S_{n_i } /f(n_i )\xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ and $$S_{T(a_i )} /f(T(a_i ))\xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ for an increasing function fand suitable sequences n i and a i. These sorts of properties are of interest in sequential analysis. Known conditions for $$S_n \xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ and $$S_n /n\xrightarrow{P}\infty $$ (divergence through the whole sequence n) are also simplified.

Notes: Abstract We studied the toxicity and efficacy of adding to epirubicin five resistance modulators in the treatment of resistant solid tumors. Additional drugs were added in successive cohorts of patients, such that cohort 1 patients received two drugs along with their epirubicin, while cohort 4 patients received five modulators along with their epirubicin. Metronidazole, tamoxifen (cohort 1), dipyridamole (cohort 2), ketoconazole (cohort 3) and cyclosporin (cohort 4) were administered with epirubicin. A total of 22 patients were treated. Nausea and vomiting was usually mild to moderate. There was an unexpectedly high incidence of possible cardiac toxicity associated with treatment, although in some patients it was uncertain whether or not observed cardiac events were related to treatment. Granulocytopenia was significant in all four cohorts, but it was unclear whether it was increased by the modulators. There were two febrile neutropenic events in cohorts 1 and 2 successfully treated with antibiotics, and three septic deaths (one in each of cohorts 1, 2 and 4). It was elected to discontinue enrolment on the study prematurely in light of cardiac and other toxicity seen in the first two patients accrued in cohort 4. A single response was observed. While this approach is feasible, the observed toxicity and the difficulty patients experienced in ingesting the large number of prescribed pills will make further exploration of this approach difficult.

Notes: Abstract.  The control of ovulation in mammalian species appears to be a highly robust process. The primary mechanism is believed to be competition amongst a group of developing follicles, mediated by a hormonal feedback loop involving in the first instance the pituitary. Successful follicles reach maturity and ovulate, the remainder atrophy and die. A model of this control process has been derived by Lacker and his group. Based on simple qualitative assumptions about the hormonal feedback loop, this is able to reflect many of the basic physiological features of ovulation in mammals. However, a fundamental hypothesis of Lacker’s work is that all follicles are identical and respond to hormonal signals in precisely the same way. Not only is this improbable, but it also leads to several aspects of the model which are qualitatively unrealistic, most notable of these is its inability to accurately model the condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. This common malfunction of the ovulatory control mechanism accounts for up to three-quarters of cases of anovulatory infertility in humans and its understanding is therefore of considerable medical significance. In this paper we extend the analysis of Lacker’s model to the case of non-identical follicles; this allows us to obtain behaviour much closer to that observed in PCOS patients and to draw some tentative conclusions about the mechanisms underlying this condition.

Notes: Abstract A new methodology for displaying and analyzing “arrest profiles” of a population of offenders is illustrated on a data set containing information on all arrests made in the jurisdiction of the state of Western Australia in the 12-year period 1 April 1984 to 31 December 1995. The arrest profile shows the number of arrests accumulated by an individual offender as a function of the age at which each arrest took place. This provides a summary of the “arrest careers” of the individuals in the population and facilitates comparisons between groups of interest in the population, such as sex and race groups. In particular, it enables comparisons to be made between cohorts of offenders defined by the age-at-onset of their offending. For the Western Australian population analyzed here we find large differences between sex and race (Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal) groups, and also between age-at-onset cohorts, and we place these differences in the context of current criminological discussions which posit that higher mean numbers of offenses will be committed by early career starters.

Notes: Abstract A group of experts from developmental and clinical psychology, sociology, social welfare, and law met at a conference centre in Middleburg, Virginiaon December 1-4, 1994, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Instituteof Child Health and Human Development. The group's mandate was to evaluateexisting knowledge regarding the ways in which children are affected bydivorce and the varying custody arrangements that follow it. Many of thediscussions also addressed the ways in which the adverse effects of divorcemight be ameliorated by changes in policy or practice. This documentrepresents a statement co-signed by most of the participants summarizingareas of agreement regarding the current status of knowledge in this areaand outlining topics in need of further research. The report is designed toguide various legislatures, the judiciary, the bar, and the various mentalhealth professionals who are involved in counselling or educating familiesexperiencing separation or divorce, as well as those who mediate oradjudicate the disputes regarding the custody of minor children. Thepreliminary draft of this consensus document was prepared by Michael E. Lamband Kathleen J. Sternberg following the three-day conference, withadditional redrafting by Ross A. Thompson. The draft was reviewed andrevised by the other participants over the ensuing months. This report, revised in accordance with the participants' comments, is a product of this process.

Notes: Abstract Teaching in business ethics has conformed to the dominant Western model of pedagogy whereby students are provided with information about ethics but rarely asked to analyse their own behaviour. There is no evidence that this approach has any practical impact on future behaviour and much reason to doubt its potential in this regard. The pedagogical traditions of India offer an alternative approach to ethical improvement – one based in self-reflection and personal transformation. The following paper considers the potential of this tradition and offers practical suggestions for its integration into Western teaching practice.
