Notes: Ornamental fish production is among the leading cash crops of the United States of America aquaculture economy, and retail value of the fish trade is worth approximately US$l,000 million. However, few studies exist to document this trade. Using import and export documents we report trends in total values for the U.S. trade in ornamental fish. Also, we determined the number and value of the most commonly imported ornamental fish. In 1992, approximately 201 million fish valued at $44.7 million were imported into the U.S. The port of Los Angeles handled 39% of all trade activity, Miami 22%, New York 16%, Tampa 6%, and Honolulu 6%. Freshwater fish accounted for approximately 96% of the total volume and 80% of the value of the imports. Most freshwater ornamental fish were farm-raised and imported from Southeast Asia. Most U.S. exports of ornamental fish were cultured in the state of Florida. Although saltwater fish had a high market value (20% of the declared value of the imports), the volume of these fish was only 4%. Most imported and exported saltwater ornamental fish were collected from the wild. Of the 1,539 species declared as ornamental fish, 32 species dominated the trade. These were all of freshwater origin. The guppy Poecilia reticulala and neon tetra Paracheirodon innesi were the most popular ornamental fish kept in U.S. households. The average prices paid for imported ornamental freshwater fish were 45 cents for egg layers and 22 cents for live bearers. The results of this study document the importance of the ornamental fish industry and identifies the most valuable species in the trade for potential domestic culture and protection in the wild.

Notes: Abstract Adverse selection, moral hazard, and crowding out by public insurance have all been proposed as theoretical reasons for why the market for private long-term care insurance has been slow to evolve in the U.S. Using national samples of the elderly and near elderly, this study investigates which is most important. The data contain direct measures of risk aversion, expectations of future nursing home use and living to old age, and the bequest motive. For both groups, we find evidence of adverse selection, and, for the elderly, crowding out of private long-term care insurance by Medicaid. However, we do not find that demand for such insurance is motivated either by bequest or exchange motives.

Notes: Abstract The classical Lorentz model for charged noninteracting point particles in a perpendicular magnetic field is reconsidered in 2D. We show that the standard Boltzmann equation is not valid for this model, even in the Grad limit. We construct a generalized Boltzmann equation which is, and solve the corresponding initial value problem exactly. By an independent calculation, we find the same solution by directly constructing the Green function from the dynamics of the model in the Grad limit. From this solution an expression for the diffusion tensor, valid for arbitrary short-range forces, is derived. For hard disks we calculate the diffusion tensor explicitly. Away from the Grad limit a percolation problem arises. We determine numerically the percolation threshold and the corresponding geometric critical exponents. The numerical evidence strongly suggests that this continuum percolation model is in the universality class of 2D lattice percolation. Although we have explicitly determined a number of limiting properties of the model, several intriguing open problems remain.

Notes: Abstract This article will contextualize ethnographic and clinicalfeatures that distinguish one particular alternativehealing method (Self-Acceptance Training) from‘mainstream’psychotherapeutic procedures. Factors common to manypsychotherapies are listed and a series of contrasts andcomparisons made by examining definitions of: (1) presentingproblems, (2) inciting events, (3) phasic development, (4)taxonomic classifications, (5) therapeutic interventions, and (6) prognostic formulations. The alternative method oftreatment described in a companion publication(‘SAT’) is used to makesome specific comparisons (Zatzick and Johnson 1997).Basch‘s (1980) concise recording of a dynamic therapy isborrowed for purposes of a comparative hypothetical treatmentof his patient through a Self-Acceptance Training session. Some directions for future work are suggested.

Notes: Abstract Historically, alternative psychotherapeutic procedures have flourishedworldwide in various inspirational, spiritualistic and shamanisticversions. However, few investigations have described these interventionsin detail, or followed the clinical outcomes longitudinally. This presentreport is an ethnographic and clinical description of one particular Americanpractitioner‘s alternative method as it is used with middleclass clientele in several regions of the USA. Two case studies are presentedin detail while nine individual cases are qualitatively reviewed with onemonth and one year treatment outcomes reported. A condensed ethnobiographicalstudy of the practitioner‘s personal and professional life isincluded.

Notes: Abstract This article reports on a study of 503 African-American, Hispanic, and White non-Hispanic adolescent girls attending public schools in Miami, Florida, The primary objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of 13 self-reported delinquent behaviors in the sample, to compare these rates among the three groups of students, and to explore the predictive influences of several family factors that correlate with delinquency. It was found that 37.5% of the sample engaged in one or more acts of serious delinquency, with African-Americans reporting they had engaged in significantly more of these behaviors. The best predictors of theft/vandalism were low family pride and family substance abuse for Hispanics, low family communication for African-Americans, and low family pride for White non-Hispanics. The findings indicate that traditional family factors that have been used repeatedly to understand delinquency by male adolescents were not strong predictors of delinquency among the adolescent girls in the sample.

Notes: Abstract Recombination of multiply charged ions with electrons at very low relative energies has become a major topic of interest, due to the observation of rates which are enhanced beyond the expectations for radiative recombination. We present results for Ar16+ and Ar18+ ions from systematic measurements along the argon isonuclear sequence using a high density cold electron beam target (ne = 7 × 109 cm-3) at the UNILAC of GSI. The transverse and longitudinal temperatures of the electron beam were determined from DR resonance features observed with metastable Ar16+ (23S) ions. The rate at Erel = 0 for radiative recombination of completely stripped Ar18+ calculated with electron beam temperatures kT∥ = 0.002 eV, kT⊥ = 0.2 eV amounts to α = 10-9 cm3 s-1. This is exceeded by nearly a factor of 10 by the rate measured in experiments with Ar18+ ions.
