Notes: By making use of effects of the image charge on projectile trajectories in scattering of a fast beam of metastable He-atoms with keV energies from an Al (111) surface under a glancing angle of incidence, we have developed a new method to analyze fast atomic beams with respect to relative populations of excited metastable states. Based on our experimental studies we propose the construction of a corresponding detector. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Total electron yields γ for impact of singly or multiply charged ions (H+, He+, He2+, N3+, N4+, O5+, O6+) on clean polycrystalline gold have been accurately measured at impact energies from almost zero [exclusive potential emission (PE) range] up to 40 keV times projectile charge state q (dominant kinetic emission range). Impact energies above 10 q keV have been approached by postacceleration of ions via target biasing with up to −30 kV. Total electron yields for γ≥3 have been derived directly from the related electron number statistics (ES) with total experimental errors of ±3%. Smaller values of γ have been determined from the related ES in conjunction with measurements of the respective primary ion, and ejected-electron currents, which caused somewhat larger experimental errors of typically ±5%. At higher impact velocity discrepancies arise between results from ES-based and current-based measurements of the total electron yield, respectively, because of systematic errors of the latter method due to projectile ion reflection and/or secondary ion emission from the target surface. For differently charged ion species, a difference in γ due to the q-related PE stays almost independent of the projectile impact energy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Monilethrix is a rare dominant hair disease characterized by beaded or moniliform hair which results from the periodic thinning of the hair shaft and shows a high propensity to excess weathering and fracturing. Several cases of monilethrix have been linked to the type II keratin gene cluster on chromosome 12q13 and causative heterozygous mutations of a highly conserved glutamic acid residue (Glu 410 Lys and Glu 410 Asp) in the helix termination motif of the type II hair keratin hHb6 have recently been identified in monilethrix patients of two unrelated families. In the present study, we have investigated two further unrelated monilethrix families as well as a single case. Affected members of one family and the single patient exhibited the prevalent hHb6 Glu 410 Lys mutation. In the second family, we identified in affected individuals a lysine substitution of the corresponding glutamic acid residue, Glu 403, in the type II hair keratin hHb1, suggesting that this site represents a mutational hotspot in these highly related type II hair keratins. Both hHb1 and hHb6 are largely coexpressed in cortical trichocytes of the hair shaft. This indicates that monilethrix is a disease of the hair cortex.

Notes: Abstract The linear viscoelastic material functions of linear flexible polymers of uniform length are calculated from the BSW spectrum (Baumgaertel et al., 1990, 1992), and explicit analytic expressions are presented for several of the most common material functions for transient and dynamic experiments. However, numerical calculations are presented whenever needed. The BSW spectrum was determined from experimental G″, G″ data of two sets of molten polymers of narrow molecular weight distribution, polystyrene and polybutadiene. The purpose of the mapping is to show a wide range of viscoelastic behavior which otherwise is not available in such comprehensive form. Experimental check of these predictions is still needed in most cases. Also, some insight into the predictions for the non-linear (including the non-equilibrium) viscoelastic behavior is achieved by studying two particular experiments: the start-up of uniaxial extension at constant rate and the start-up of shear flow at constant rate.

Notes: Abstract Heavy ion storage rings allow for tests of the structure of local space time via the Doppler effect. At the TSR/Heidelberg an experiment with high resolution laser spectroscopy at 7Li+ is performed. To gain the maximum resolution for saturation spectroscopy new methods of relativistic ion beam preparation and diagnostics have been developed. The laser cooling of the beam allows for precision determination of the mean velocity of the ions. A novel phase synchronous detection scheme, ultimately sensitive to single ions, gives insights into the cooling mechanism and dynamics. With an additional synchronous excitation scheme systematic uncertainties of the test experiment can be drastically reduced. After separation of the ground state ions from the triplet states of 7Li+ by the combination of laser and electron cooling, a bunched and cooled ensemble of fast moving high precision clocks with minimized perturbations by space charge effects and intra beam scattering is available.

Notes: Abstract For laser induced recombination of heavy ions a new detector was developed that in comparison to a multiwire proportional counter provides better time resolution. It is able to cope with very high rates and gives the possibility for very easy online monitoring of the detected beam.
