Notes: The nucleation rate (I) versus temperature type of curves for a Na2O2·CaO·3SiO2 (NC2S3) glass doped with 0.1 wt% platinum, 0.5 wt% Ag2O, and 2.0 wt% P2O5 were determined using a previously developed differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. In this DTA technique, a constant amount of glass sample was nucleated at selected temperatures for a specific time, followed by a DTA scan at a fixed heating rate. The functional dependence of the maximum intensity of the exothermic DTA crystallization peak ((deltaT)p) or the inverse temperature at the DTA peak maximum (Tp−1) on the nucleation temperature (Tn) was used to determine the nucleation rate versus temperature type of curves. Calculations for qualitatively assessing the dependence of (deltaT)p on Tn were performed using I and crystal growth rate (U) curves for a hypothetical system. Values of (deltaT)p calculated for different degrees of overlap between the I and U curves were compared with those measured experimentally. The (deltaT)p vs Tn curves depended strongly on the overlap of I and U, whereas the Tp−1 vs Tn curves were unaffected by the overlap.

Notes: Abstract Physical adsorption and physical entrapment techniques have been utilized for the immobilization of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) on tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) derived sol-gel films. The enzyme (LDH) activity has been assayed as a function of time, temperature, pH and pyruvate concentration. The results of photometric measurements used for monitoring the reaction yield a response time of about 1 min, linearity over a concentration range of 0–1.5 × 10-3 M and detection limit of 5 × 10-5 M. The TEOS sol-gel films containing LDH have been found to be stable for about 30 days at temperatures 4 to 10°C.

Notes: The widespread contamination of aquatic sediments by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has created a need for cost-effective remediation processes. Many common PAHs are biodegradable, leading to studies investigating the potential of sediment bioremediation. This article reviews several factors that currently complicate the implementation of sediment bioremediation processes: the effect of complex mixtures of contaminants on the rate and extent of degradation observed, the bioavailability of PAHs in sorbed- and nonaqueous-phase, and methods being evaluated to enhance degradation/availability (surfactant-enhanced solubility, nutrient addition, and bioaugmentation).

Notes: Abstract The isolation and characterization of 2-fluorophenyl imines and their metal complexes based upon physical (quantitative analyses, molecular weight determinations and conductivity measurements) and spectral evidence (i.r. and 1H-, 13C- and 19F-n.m.r.) are described. Structural assignments have been made from spectral studies. The donor sites of ligands have been located and geometries of the donor environment around the RuIII acceptor centre are proposed. In view of the potential therapeutic activity exhibited by the fluoro ligands, RuIII complexes, together with their parent 2-fluorophenyl imines, were screened for biological activity. The results are encouraging.

Notes: Chaotic behaviour of physical systems has been observed experimentally and numerically. It has also been observed that chaotic systems are extremely sensitive to initial conditions. In this paper, the efficacy of using different numerical integration schemes, some of which are preferred in finite element software for transient dynamics, is discussed using techniques to detect chaotic behaviour such as Poincaré maps, FFTs, the Lyapunov exponent and fractal dimensions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The disturbed state concept (DSC) provides a unified approach for constitutive modelling of engineering materials including such factors as elastic, plastic and creep strains, microcracking, damage and softening, and stiffening responses. The interacting mechanisms in the material mixture composed of the relative intact and fully adjusted states provide implicitly for various factors such as microcrack interaction and characteristic dimension. The DSC model can allow for well-posedness, reduction or elimination of spurious mesh dependence and localization. A number of problems are solved to illustrate convergence and uniqueness of the finite element procedures, localization, spurious mesh dependence, and validation with respect to observed behavior of simulated and practical problems. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
