Notes: The influence of the nonconservation of magnetization modulus on the steady-state motion of a planar domain wall in the presence of an external field normal to the anisotropy axis is studied. It is shown that the nonconservation of magnetization modulus gives a noticeable contribution to the domain wall mobility in ferromagnets with narrow line of ferromagnetic resonance and almost does not affect the domain wall mobility in ferromagnets with wide line of the ferromagnetic resonance. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Acoustic measurements on Nd2CuO4 single crystals have recently revealed a ferroelastic phase transition at about Tc=5 K. In view of the strong magnetoelastic coupling in the compound it was attributed to an additional reorientation of Cu spins. In the present report it is shown that this transition can be successfully described if one takes the Nd magnetic subsystem into account explicitly. This approach requires treating a phenomenological Hamiltonian within invariants of the fourth order in spins only, which is natural for a tetragonal symmetry of the system. Complementary information about the strength of Nd–Nd interactions has been derived. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic entropy change of La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 with different particle size has been investigated. Magnetic entropy change ∼4.7 J/kg K larger than that of Gd has been observed at 224 K under a magnetic field of 1.5 T in comparatively big particles. This phenomenon of large magnetic entropy change indicates that the perovskite-type manganese oxides have potential applications for magnetic refrigerants in high temperature.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Reflective twisted nematic displays where the output polarizer is eliminated are analyzed and demonstrated. The absence of the rear output polarizer has many advantages, including much higher brightness and higher resolution. In this article, we examine the solution space for the design of such reflective displays. Both the cases of a simple reflective display and the use of a retardation film within the display to compensate for color dispersion are explored. It is shown that excellent black and white displays can be obtained using film compensation. Experimentally, over 90% reflectance from a compensated reflective display has been obtained with low color dispersion. The optical response of this reflective display was also found to be quite fast and suitable for video rate applications. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Marked neovascularization is a hallmark of many neoplasms in the nervous system. Recent reports indicate that the endothelial mitogen vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) may play a critical role in the regulation of vascular endothelial proliferation in malignant gliomas. Using novel monoclonal antibodies to the VEGF polypeptide we have determined the expression and cellular distribution of VEGF protein in a representative series of 171 human central nervous system (CNS) tumors by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting. In agreement with previous in situ hybridization data, 19 out of 20 glioblastomas (95%) showed immunoreactivity for VEGF, whereas both the percentage of immunoreactive tumors and the extent of immunoreactivity for VEGF were significantly lower in astrocytomas. Of the pilocytic astrocytomas (WHO grade I) 44% were immunoreactive for VEGF, but we observed several cases with pronounced vascular proliferates in the absence of VEGF. In ependymomas, meningiomas, hemangioblastomas, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors, there was no correlation between VEGF expression, vascular endothelial proliferation and the grade of malignancy. Oligodendrogliomas and the oligodendroglial component of mixed gliomas lacked immunoreactive VEGF, indicating that endothelial growth factors other than VEGF may regulate tumor angiogenesis in these neoplasms. Western blot analysis showed a predominant VEGF protein species of 23 kDa and confirmed the immunohistochemical data in all cases. Our findings demonstrate that VEGF is expressed in a wide spectrum of brain tumors in which it may induce neovascularization. However, other angiogenic factors also appear to contribute to the vascularization of CNS neoplasms.

Notes: Abstract  In this paper an experimental investigation of a starting water flow downstream of a backward-facing step is described. The Reynolds number of the asymptotic steady flow is Re≈4300 based on the step height of s=2 cm and the free stream velocity of U=21.4 cm/s. Velocity measurements were performed with video-based DPIV (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry) at a sampling frequency of 25 Hz. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the temporal development of global structures which could not be analyzed with single-point probes. It was found that at initialization of the flow a regular vorticity street is formed, which collapses at a normalized time t * =U t/s≈17 due to vorticity interactions. After this the flow is dominated by complicated vorticity roll-up and shedding dynamics in the recirculation region. The starting phase is terminated for t * 〉40. Prior to the collapse of the vorticity street values of 9 times the steady state asymptotic wall normal stress and of twice the steady state negative wall shear stress were observed. The early increasing slope of the reattachment length is constant over a time of approximately t * =8. The collapse of the vorticity street and the vorticity interactions thereafter cause fluctuations both in the velocity in the free shear layer and in the reattachment length. The fully developed flow has a dominant frequency corresponding to a Strouhal number St=fs/U≈0.04.

Notes: Abstract Cytokeratins are one group of intermediate filament proteins responsible for the integrity of cell structure, and have been recently reported to play a role in conferring a drug resistance phenotype. MAb Cx-99 is a monoclonal antibody exhibiting the specificity toward its corresponding antigen which was recently identified as the cytokeratin-19 protein. In the present study, we found that the level of cytokeratin-19 in cervical cancer cells could be decreased by incubation of cancer cells with MAb Cx-99. The reduction of cytokeratin-19 level had a killing effect on cervical carcinoma SIHA and HeLa S3 cell lines. The DNA ladder pattern, convoluted nuclei and blebbing morphology were observed with these cells after exposure to MAb Cx-99 for 72 h, suggesting that the cytotoxic mechanism of reduced cytokeratin-19 was mediated by induction of apoptosis. Moreover, the MAb Cx-99 treatment could increase the cytotoxicities of cancer chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin and vinblastine to both cervical carcinoma cell lines. The LD80 values were at least 15-fold reduced when cancer cells were treated with cisplatin or vinblastine in the presence of MAb Cx-99. These results suggest that the functional role of cytokeratin-19 was associated with the apoptosis prevention and drug resistance of cervical cancer cells.

Notes: Abstract Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of high dietary cholesterol on the lipid composition; Na+-K+-ATPase activity and ouabain receptor property of the myocardial sarcolemma. Methods: Male New Zealand white rabbits were fed with standard chow or standard chow supplemented with 0.5% (w/w) cholesterol and 10% (w/w) coconut oil to induce hypercholesterolemia. After 8 weeks, the rabbits were sacrificed; a myocardial sarcolemma fraction was then prepared from the left ventricular myocardium and analyzed for lipid composition. Assay of Na+-K+-ATPase activity and 3H-ouabain binding studies were performed in the myocardial sarcolemma from the control and cholesterol-fed rabbits. Results: The cholesterol content, but not the phospholipid content, of the sarcolemma was significantly greater in the cholesterol-fed group, thus, resulting in an increased cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio in the cholesterol-fed group. In addition, a decrease in Na+-K+-ATPase activity was also found in this group. The decrease in Na+-K+-ATPase activity was selective, since the Mg++-ATPase and 5'-nucleotidase activities remained unchanged. In the 3H-ouabain binding study, a decrease in the number of maximum binding sites, but not the binding affinity, for 3H-ouabain was found in the cholesterol-fed group. Conclusions: High dietary cholesterol induces higher levels of cholesterol not only in the plasma, but also in the myocardial sarcolemma. These changes result in decreased myocardial Na+-K+-ATPase activity mediated by a reduction in the maximum number of binding sites for ouabain but not a change in binding affinity.
