Notes: As part of a study of species important in automotive exhaust chemistry, the reactivity of atomic N and NO on Pt(335) at low temperature has been studied. The atomic N was produced by dissociating adsorbed NO with a 76 eV electron beam. Cross sections for electron-stimulated desorption and dissociation are estimated for NO on terrace and step sites. Terrace NO is at least five times more likely to desorb than to dissociate. Step NO has a lower desorption cross section than terrace NO, but probably a higher dissociation cross section. Temperature-programmed desorption was used to monitor desorption, dissociation, and the formation of N2 and N2O from adsorbed N and NO. Five distinct desorption states of N2 formed by NO dissociation are identified. The dominant N2 peak (435 K) comes from electron-dissociated step NO; its desorption temperature is higher than the N2 peaks from electron-dissociated terrace NO. Coadsorbed N and NO react to form N2O even below 100 K, with an activation barrier of ∼6 kcal/mol. Only terrace NO participates in this reaction; step NO does not react to form N2O. This site dependence resembles that for CO oxidation on Pt(112) and Pt(335) and can be rationalized with simple steric considerations. All of the forms of atomic N participate in N2O formation, but that formed by the dissociation of step NO exhibits the lowest reaction temperature. Hence, the same N atoms that only recombine to form N2 at 435 K, react with NO to form N2O at 100 K. We found no evidence for an NO reaction with N atoms to form N2 and adsorbed O, or for NO formation from the recombination of adsorbed N and adsorbed O2. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structures, phase transformations, and dielectric properties of pyrochlore ceramics containing bismuth were studied. The relation between the orthorhombic and cubic pyrochlores in the Bi2O3-ZnO-Nb2O5 (BZN) system has been investigated. The effect of bismuth in distorted cubic pyrochlore structures is discussed. BZN compositions with pyrochlore structures have excellent dielectric properties, very low dielectric loss, and high dielectric constants with stable frequency and temperature dependence.

Notes: [Auszug] The identification of fusin and other chemokine receptors as coreceptors for HIV-1 has renewed the interest in agents that may prevent viral entry. Polyanionic compounds such as dextran sulfate, curdlan sulfate, and suramin act on the V3 loop of the viral envelope and may prevent its interaction ...

Notes: [Auszug] Mammalian cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors are important in the regulation of the cell cycle and in development1. Using the yeast two-hybrid system2 we have identified a CDK inhibitor gene in Arabidopsis thaliana which we have named ICKl. The gene product has unique structural features and ...

Notes: Abstract  This project aimed to determine the adequacy and accuracy of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for ablating experimental liver tumour, and to assess imaging methods for monitoring the therapeutic results. The rabbit liver pseudotumour model was established by injection of Freund’s complete adjuvant into the liver; the animals then received HIFU therapy via laparotomy at the focal point of the beam (1.1 MHz, 500 W/cm2, 20 s). The rabbits were sacrificed at scheduled times after treatment and liver tumours were examined histologically. Sequential imaging of the liver tumour was performed before and after HIFU treatment. HIFU accurately destroyed the rabbit liver tumour and induced coagulation necrosis 24 h later. Sonographic imaging studies revealed that characteristic changes occurred. A hyperechoic mass turned to a hypoechoic lesion with no Doppler signal, and a high echogenic rim appeared 24 h after HIFU treatment, correlating well with the pathological changes of a sonoablated lesion. These results verify that HIFU has the power to ablate liver tumour quite adequately and accurately, and that sonography is useful for monitoring sonoablated liver tumour.

Notes: Abstract Highly crystalline and fully [1 0 0]-textured Mg2TiO4 thin films have been successfully prepared on Si(1 0 0) and (1 1 1) substrate by using atmospheric pressure metallorganic chemical vapour deposition. Magnesium acetylacetonate was used as the metallorganic source. The films were produced in a horizontal warm-wall reactor. X-ray diffraction experiments provided evidence that the Mg2TiO4 thin films on Si substrate were fully textured with [1 0 0] orientation perpendicular to the substrate surface. The films obtained a very smooth and densely packed surface morphology. The relationship between substrate temperature and crystallographic orientations was also considered.

Notes: Abstract Coordination compounds derived from 1,1′-bis(N-formyl-N′-substituted thiourea)ferrocene derivatives have been prepared. Elemental analyses indicate the presence of a 1:1 metal-to-ligand ratio. I.r. and 1H-n.m.r. spectra show that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the corresponding ligands remain intact upon coordination. The single crystal structure of one such compound, a coordination polymer, was determined. CuII was reduced to CuI during the coordination process.

Notes: Abstract Inoculum size (1.5-6.0g dry weight/l) significantly affected cell growth and accumulation of intracellular and extracellular taxol in Taxus chinensis. A shorter cultivation time and a higher biomass productivity were achieved using inoculum size of 6.0g DW/l. Both the intracellular content and total production of taxol were increased almost 30% with an increase of inoculum size from 1.5 to 3.0g DW/l, while an even higher inoculum size decreased taxol formation. The extracellular taxol concentration was relatively higher (0.091mg/l) at low inoculum sizes of 1.5 and 2.0g DW/l; and in various cases it was less than 25% of the total amount of taxol produced.
