Notes: Abstract: A recoil distance method was used to measure half-lives of the excited states of 145Sm. The reaction used was 139La(10B, 4n)145Sm. A plunger system was used. Half-lives were determined for two excited states for the first time. The yrast 27/2+ state was found to have a half-life of 1.1 ± 0.2 ns corresponding to the retardation of 3.1 × 10−4 comparing with the single particle estimate of M1. The excitation energy of this state was well reproduced by the shell model calculation having a mixed configuration of [π{h11/2(g7/2)−2 (d5/2)−1}10−, νf7/2] + [π{h11/2(g7/2)−1}9−,νh9/2]. Another retarded E1 transition was also found in a decay of a 21/2+ state. Its retardation was 1.6 × 10−4 comparing with the single particle value.

Notes: Abstract Two chromosome-integrating vectors, pLC1 and pLC2, were used. The former is the pUC19-based vector carrying the Lentinus edodes ras gene promoter and priA gene terminator, and the latter is the pBR322-based vector carrying the promoter and terminator of the priA gene. The manganese (II) peroxidase (MnP) cDNA (mnpc) derived from Pleurotus ostreatus was fused between the promoter and terminator of pLC1 and pLC2, yielding the recombinant plasmids pLC1-mnp and pLC2-mnp. These plasmids were introduced into protoplasts of the Coprinus cinereus trp1 strain with the C. cinereus TRP1-containing plasmid pCc1001 by co-transformation. Two Trp+ transformants for each plasmid, showing clearly higher lignin-decolorization activities, were obtained through introduction of pLC1-mnp and pLC2-mnp. Southern-blot analysis revealed that the four transformants all possess the mnpc sequence on their chromosomes. One Trp+ MnP+ transformant (named TF2-7), which was derived from the introduction of pLC2-mnp and carried the highest number of copies (approx. 10) of mnpc, showed remarkably high lignin-decolorization and -degradation activities; at the time of cultivation when only 35%–40% of the lignin was decolored and degraded by the control Trp+ transformant obtained by the introduction of pCc1001 alone, almost all of the lignin was decolored and degraded by TF2-7.

Notes: Abstract  We report on a 13-year old girl with severe aplastic anemia and hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis. She was admitted to our hospital with severe headache and vomiting. A computerized tomographic (CT) scan of the brain on the third day of symptoms showed a hyperdense area in the tentorial region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed iso-intensity in the same tentorial region in T1- and T2-weighted images, and gadolinium enhancement of this region suggested a thickened dura mater. Initially, a diagnosis of subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage was made. Since her platelet count was low (3000/μl) making the patient a poor-risk candidate for surgery, and the area was limited to the dura mater, conservative therapy, including glycerol administration and platelet transfusion, was carried out. Despite clinical improvement 10 days after admission without specific therapy, the iso-intense region on the left side of the tentorial region remained unchanged on MRI. On the other hand, the iso-intense area on the right side of the tentorial region became hyperdense on T1-weighted MRI images and was also enhanced by gadolinium. Cerebrospinal fluid findings were normal except for slightly elevated protein at 62 mg/dl. A diagnosis of hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis of the tentorial dura mater with hemorrhage on the right side was made. Although hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis is a rare disease, it must be considered in the differential diagnosis of severe headache in a case of aplastic anemia.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. Twenty-four patients who sustained a fracture of the superior border of the scapula are reviewed. All were associated with a fracture of the coracoid process and other shoulder injuries. There were 19 long fracture lines and 5 short. The former and 3 of the latter were extensions of a coracoid fracture; in 2, there appeared to be an avulsion fracture by traction through the superior transverse scapular ligament resulting from the upward displacement of the coracoid.

Notes: Abstract In order to clarify the possible mechanism of hearing loss in immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss, basic research needed includes animal model studies. In the present investigation, we examined hearing thresholds and cochlear histologies of the MRL/lpr mouse which is now well-known as a model for pathology consistent with systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE). Present findings demonstrated that there were no statistically significant differences in auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds between 4- to 6-week-old “young” and 20- to 25-week-old “old” MRL mice. These differences were not sex-dependent. Under light microscopy, there were no abnormal morphological findings in the cochleas of either young or old MRL mice. With immunohistochemistry, mouse IgG was detected around the capillary walls in the stria vascularis in both young and old MRL mice. Serum IgG level of the MRL mice significantly decreased after predonisolone (PSL) administration. However, expression of mouse IgG in the stria vascularis was not observed in the MRL mice after PSL administration. From these results, we speculate that the hearing of the MRL mouse does not always deteriorate, and the deposition of mouse IgG on the capillary wall in the stria vascularis is not a sufficient factor to induce hearing loss. At this point, we conclude that the MRL mouse should not be considered a useful model for immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss.
