Notes: We studied the deposition of Au, In, Ag, and Al overlayers onto clean-cleaved GaTe(001) surfaces at room temperature by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Gold and In overlayers did not produce evidence of chemical reactions, and neither with cation nor anion outdiffusion. Gold overlayers exhibited no evidence of island formation and a layer-by-layer overlayer coverage. The deposition of In revealed the presence of clustering for a metal thickness higher than 6 Å. On the other hand, the deposition of Al lead to an exchange reaction with a metalliclike Ga phase separation. Core level analysis of the Ag–GaTe interface revealed no noticeable change of the shape of the peaks. The dependence of the peak intensities on overlayer thickness showed an initial layer-by-layer coverage until 1.8 Å, followed by a clustering growth mode. From about 3.7 Å Ag thickness, significant Te outdiffusion was observed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoemission spectromicroscopy data on Si–GaSe with 0.2 μm lateral resolution revealed laterally inhomogeneous interface Se–Si chemical reactions. The local Si 2p fits agrees with interface Si selenide parameters; the Se 3d peaks indicate a Si–selenide component; the Ga 3d peaks exhibit a metallic component whose intensity increases with Si coverage. This local interface reaction is related to lateral changes in the band lineup. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High resolution stimulated gain Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate the collisional parameters of pure rotational S0(j=0–4) lines of H2 in pure H2 and H2–He mixture. Measurements are performed between 300 and 1000 K in a density regime where the lines are essentially collisionally broadened (typically 10 amagat). For the first time, these highly accurate measurements of the frequencies of pure rotational lines allow one to correct previously measured values that did not take into account the collisional frequency shift. For both collisional systems, the shifting coefficients exhibit a linear behavior with the square root of temperature, similar to the behavior already observed in the Q branch. The broadening coefficients of the S0 branch increase nonlinearly with temperature contrary to the Q branch. For the H2–He system, both these new S0(j) data and previously measured Q(j) data are analyzed using a modeling of the broadening coefficients in terms of elastic and inelastic contributions. These different contributions are analyzed as a function of temperature and of the rotational quantum number j. Preliminary quantum calculations are used to assess the validity of the model. Further calculations will be presented in paper II. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Background: Antioxidants protect the body against cellular oxidative damage and thus some of the adverse effects induced by cisplatin and other cytostatic drugs. Patients and methods: The effect of cisplatin-combination chemotherapy on concentrations of plasma antioxidants was studied in 36 cancer patients, including osteosarcoma and testicular carcinoma patients. Results: Eight to 15 days after the start of each cytostatic drug infusion concentrations of various plasma antioxidants were measured and compared to pretreatment values: vitamin C and E, uric acid and ceruloplasmin levels fell significantly (P 〈 0.01–0.005) and returned to baseline levels before the start of the next chemotherapy cycle. Levels of the antioxidants bilirubin, albumin and the ratio vitamin E/cholesterol + triglycerides measured three weeks after the start of chemotherapy significantly decreased compared to pretreatment levels and remained low thereafter (P 〈 0.001–0.002). Dietary intake of antioxidants and anthropometric measurements, evaluated in 14 patients did not change during the whole treatment period. Conclusions: Cisplatin-combination chemotherapy induces a fall in plasma antioxidant levels, that may reflect a failure of the antioxidant defense mechanism against oxidative damage induced by commonly used anticancer drugs. This probably results from consumption of antioxidants caused by chemotherapy induced-oxidative stress as well as renal loss of water-soluble, small molecular weight antioxidants such as uric acid.

Notes: Abstract We report on thermal conductivity measurements of the quasi-onedimensional single crystals (Ta 1−x Nb x Se 4 ) 2 I (x = 0, 0.008, 0.01) between 50 mK and 6 K. The thermal conductivity of a (TaSe 4 ) 2 I sample obeys a cubic variation below 0.8 K, in good agreement with the boundary scattering regime. For two Nb doped samples, the thermal conductivity between 0.1 K and 1 K obeys a quasiquadratic regime, which is ascribed to extended “linear or planar defects,” specific to this one-dimensional structure, and introduced either by doping or by successive thermal cycling, while it obeys a cubic variation below 0.1 K, as in the case of pure (TaSe 4 ) 2 I. In the vicinity of 1 K and 2 K for pure and 1 at. % Nb doped samples, thermal conductivity shows a very sharp peak, which exceeds the low-temperature cubic boundary Casimir regime, or the quasi quadratic regime, respectively. The presence of the peak in these systems is explained by a phonon Poiseuille flow, originating from their strong anharmonicity, amplified by the lattice anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we document the effects of acidification on fish populations in lakes in Sør-Varanger near the Russian border in northern Norway. We used questionnaires in order to assess the current status and distribution of different fish species, and conducted test-fishing to determine relative abundance (CPUE-T) and age structure. Acidification of surface waters in this area is due to emissions of SO2 from smelters on the Kola Peninsula in Russia (Nikel and Zapoljarnij) between 10 and 30 km from the Norwegian border. Sulphur deposition in Sør-Varanger ranges from 0.6 to 2.0 g S m-2 yr-1, which is similar to levels in the most acidified areas in southern Norway. However, a dominant fraction of the acidic deposition reaches the ground in particulate form during summer and autumn. Coastal areas in Sør-Varanger receive small amounts of precipitation; the annual mean is 580 mm. We obtained fish status from 401 lakes, about 40% of all lakes larger than 3 ha, which were inhabited by 236 and 293 populations of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta), respectively. The extent of fish damage was small as only three populations of Arctic charr were lost, while three populations of Arctic charr and eight populations of brown trout were at various stages of reduction. Damaged and lost fish populations were identified in smaller lakes at relatively high elevations (172–349 m) in six areas in the Jarfjord Mountains, covering a land area of 30.0 km2. Most of the damage probably occurred during the 1970s and 1980s. In lakes that supported or had supported Arctic charr and brown trout, we found a significant relationship between CPUE-T, and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) and pH, and also between alkalinity and the concentration of inorganic Al for brown trout. In both species, the catch of fish in age groups 1+ and 2+ (CPUE-R) increased significantly with CPUE-T. Affected populations typically exhibited irregular age composition, and age-classes were missing, indicating that reductions in fish populations were due to recruitment failure. The limited fish damage is related to relatively good catchment resistance to acidic inputs, small amounts of wet deposition as well as precipitation. These conditions result in low accumulation of acidic compounds, producing less acidic run-off waters and few episodes of unfavourable water quality.
