    Notes: Stereotactic methods have been successfully used for the treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders. The main difficulties experienced with the current systems are their cumbersome frames and their time consuming positioning procedures. The South African Medical Research Council/University of Cape Town Biostereometrics Group, together with the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Cape Town, in an attempt to overcome the problems associated with the present stereotactic guidance frames, have developed a very simple probe pointing device. The Cape Town Stereotactic Pointer (CTSP) is based on stereophotogrammetric principles but uses computed tomography as the imaging and measuring medium.

    Notes: Ion-selective microelectrodes were used to measure NH4+, NO3– and H+ fluxes along the primary root of maize seedlings. Plants were exposed to nutrient solutions containing NH4+, NO3– or both ions. Nitrogen fluxes along the root varied substantially among the different treatments. Net NH4+ and NO3– uptake and H+ extrusion were low at the very apex of the root and generally increased in the more basal regions. In the absence of nitrogen or in the presence of NO3– alone, net H+ uptake (and root surface alkalinization) occurred at the root tip (0–1 mm), whereas net H+ extrusion occurred in all other regions. In the presence of NH4+ alone, a dramatic increase in net H+ extrusion was detected in all regions except for the region 6–11 mm from the apex. In contrast, when NO3– alone was supplied, net H+ extrusion was depressed at all locations except for the tip (0–1 mm). When both NH4+ and NO3– were supplied, NO3– uptake was suppressed at all locations while net H+ extrusion was increased relative to NO3– alone. The capacities to absorb NH4+ and NO3– at the tip were similar, as indicated by flux rates when NH4+ or NO3– were supplied as sole sources, but when supplied together, net NO3– uptake was half that of net NH4+ uptake, indicating that NH4+ may satisfy the nitrogen requirements of the poorly vascularized apical tissue in the most energy-efficient way. The high spatial resolution of the measurements enabled us to establish that acidification in the root expansion zone is maintained regardless of nitrogen source.

    Notes: Abstract: The self-reported prevalence of, and attitudes to and perceptions of, osteoporosis in the South Australian community were assessed using data collected as part of the 1995 South Australian Health Omnibus Survey (household interviews) – a clustered, self-weighting, multistage sample of households in metropolitan and country centers. The self-reported prevalence was 4.8 (95% CI: 3.7–5.8) and 1.4% (95% CI: 0.8–2.0) for women (n= 1531) and men (n= 1485) respectively. For individuals with osteoporosis, calcium was the favored treatment (52%), while 33% of women were on hormone replacement therapy. An appropriate definition of osteoporosis was given by 62% of women and 37% of men. The main risk factors were reported as lack of calcium and age. There was a significant association between knowledge of the definition of osteoporosis and identification of correct risk factors. A high perceived risk of osteoporosis was reported in 23% of women and 7% of men. Osteoporosis risk was assessed as higher in those who did not adopt recognized prevention measures. Perception of risk was not related to the individual's own risk factors. Self-reported prevalence of osteoporosis significantly underestimates the likely true prevalence and general awareness and knowledge is much lower for men than women. The importance of individual risk factors for osteoporosis are not understood by the general community.

    Notes: Abstract. Because of its ability to depict intravascular, intramural, and extramural pathology, non-invasive imaging is well suited to assessing life-threatening hemoptysis that may complicate Behçet disease. We made exclusive use of CT angiography supplemented by MR to identify pulmonary thromboembolism, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and bilateral pulmonary artery aneurysms with signs of previous unilateral rupture. Two-dimensional reformatted CT images provided surgeons with a road map of upstream and downstream vascular relationships prior to aneurysm resection. Imaging findings were confirmed by surgery and pathology. Non-invasive imaging proved to be a useful alternative to standard catheter arteriography in the preoperative assessment of hemoptysis in this patient with Behçet disease.

    Notes: Preliminary enzymatic polymerization studies in the simple stoichiometric adipic acid/butane-1,4-diol system using lipase B from Candida antarctica, immobilized as Novozym 435®, suggest that in solvent-free conditions a step-growth mechanism operates involving the sequential addition of an AB synthon by esterification mode only. Conversely, in toluene as solvent there is a change to the more facile transesterification mode in line with the conventional polyesterification procedure, pointing to a change in specificity of the lipase. Evidence is drawn from qualitative studies using a series of synthetic intermediates, enabling authentication of product mixtures together with an indication of the comparative reactivity of species along the proposed reaction pathway. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
