Notes: Real and imaginary permittivity (ɛ′ and ɛ″, respectively) values were determined on mullite-silicon carbide whisker (mullite-SiCw) composites, mullite-ZrO2 composites, and spinel-SiCw composites, in the frequency range of 2-18 GHz, using a 14 mm coaxial air-line measurement system. Depending on the frequency, the addition of 30 vol% of SiCw to mullite increases ɛ′ from 6.6-6.9 to 16-22 and increases ɛ′ from 0 to 16-22. The addition of 32 vol% of SiCw to spinel increases ɛ′ from 7.5-7.8 to 37-44 and increases ɛ″ from 0 to 13-20. The addition of 21 vol% of ZrO2 to mullite increases ɛ″ to ∼9 but does not change ɛ″. Real and imaginary permeability values were 1 and 0, which are within experimental error.

Notes: Abstract: To examine potential alteration of GABAergic striatal neurons in Alzheimer's disease, we used quantitative in situ hybridization to analyze the messenger RNA coding for Mr 67,000 glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD67 mRNA) in the striatum of five patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and nine matched control subjects. We found a 51–57% increase in the optical density of hybridization signal in the caudate nucleus and putamen, corresponding to a 30–42% increase in the number of neurons expressing a detectable amount of GAD67 mRNA. By contrast, no alteration was observed in the ventral striatum. The expression of GAD67 mRNA per neuron was similar in AD and control subjects both in the dorsal and ventral striatum. Taken together, our data indicate that, in AD, GABAergic neurotransmission is increased in the dorsal striatum but not in the ventral striatum. We suggest that this increased GABAergic neurotransmission may explain extrapyramidal signs often observed in AD.

Notes: Ca1−xErxF2+x thin films, epitaxially grown on silicon substrates, present a 1.53 μm infrared luminescence line, which gives them an evident interest for optical communications. At room temperature, using an argon laser as the excitation source, the maximum of this emission is obtained in thin films for x=0.16, when it is observed for very low erbium contents in bulk CaF2:Er3+ single crystals. Thus, we can think that the Er3+ ion environment, which governs the self-quenching phenomena, differs in thin films from that in bulk single crystals. In this paper, the nature of the erbium doping centers and their spatial distribution into the host material are studied versus x by using complex admittance and thermally stimulated depolarization techniques. In thin films, it is shown that for x≤0.01, the luminescent centers correspond to isolated Er3+–Fi− ion pairs in nn sites, which behave like dipoles, D1. Their activation energy is 0.68 eV. From x=0.01 to x=0.05 clustering begins to be observed and leads when x〉0.05, to the formation of extended clusters, usually called D2a in the literature. So, the clustering process in thin films appears only for concentrations two orders of magnitude higher than in single crystals. Moreover, it is shown that, whatever x varying from 0.001 to 0.20, charges can be transferred between pairs or clusters. Then, the activation energy depends on the mean distance between these defects, and thus, on the erbium content: the dielectric response corresponds to a homogeneous distribution of the pairs or clusters into the bulk of the host matrix. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Minimal residual disease (MRD) is the tumor burden that is present after a course of treatment that has resulted in clinical remission. For hematopoietic malignancies, techniques for detection of this minimal tumor burden are being used to monitor MRD. These involve methods that are capable of identifying very low numbers of neoplastic cells in an otherwise normal marrow or lymph node. Patients with demonstrable residual neoplastic cells tend to do worse than patients without detectable cells; however, results depend on the timing of the assay and whether the detectable neoplastic cells appear to be increasing in number with subsequent assays. For bone marrow transplantation, assays incorporating chimerism analyses, cytogenetics, and morphology are used to regulate therapy.

Notes: Ab initio configuration interaction calculations are carried out for eight low-lying 1,3Πu and four 1Δu states of the O2 molecule. Three different types of couplings are considered: nonadiabatic, spin–orbit, and rotational, and the complex scaling method has been employed to determine rovibrational energies and wave functions. The calculations correctly predict a large number of trends in the measured level locations, predissociation linewidths, rotational constants, and line intensities for the (4pσ) 1,3Πu states. It is found that the v=1 level has the lowest frequency and strongest absorption intensity among the four observed vibrational levels of the (4pσ) 3Πu state, while the v=2 has the broadest predissociation linewidth and v=0, the smallest rotational constant, all in agreement with experimental findings. The linewidth of the v=0 level of the 1Πu state is computed to be 0.01 cm−1, consistent with the measured value of less than 0.1 cm−1. The calculations indicate that the v=0 level of the (4pσ) 1Πu state borrows intensity from the allowed (4pσ) 3Πu–X 3Σg− through spin–orbit interaction and that the v=4 level of the (4pσ) 3Π1u component, which has not yet been identified experimentally, is strongly perturbed by the v=3 level of the (4pσ) 1Πu state. The L-uncoupling-type interaction between 1Πu and 1Δu states is also studied, and the explanation for the missing lines of the v=0, J≥2 rovibrational levels of the (4pσ) 1Πu states is sought based on the calculated results. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a study of Er3+ in Ca1−xErxF2+x thin films, epitaxially grown by thermal sublimation of the solid solution on silicon and CaF2 substrates. Several techniques were used in the characterization of the films, with the aim to interpret their physical properties. Extended x-rays absorption fine structure as well as the electron spin resonance show that the films present fewer clusters than Er3+ diluted in the bulk CaF2, confirming previous optical studies. These results show that the films are more convenient than the bulk materials to use in optical devices. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Computational strategies for the treatment of relativistic effects including spin-orbit coupling at a highly correlated level are compared for a number of heavy atoms: indium, iodine, thallium, and astatine. Initial tests with perturbation theory emphasize the importance of high-energy singly excited configurations which possess large spin-orbit matrix elements with the ground state. A contracted basis consisting of L–S CI eigenfunctions (LSC–SO–CI) is found to give an accurate representation of both spin-perturbed 2Po components as long as key np→pi* singly excited configurations are included. Comparison is made with a more extensive treatment in which all selected configurations of various L–S symmetries form the basis for the multireference–spin-orbit–configuration interaction (MR–SO–CI). Good agreement is obtained with experimental SO splittings for the In, I, and At atoms at a variety of levels of treatment, indicating that the L–S contracted SO–CI approach can be implemented quite effectively with relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs) for both very electronegative atoms and also for lighter electropositive elements up through the fifth row of the periodic table. The thallium atom SO splitting is more difficult to obtain accurately because of greater differences between its valence p1/2 and p3/2 spinors than in the other cases studied, but good results are also possible with the contracted SO–CI approach in this instance, provided proper care is given to the inclusion of key singly excited L–S states. The relationship between all-electron two-component SO–CI treatments and those employing RECPs is also analyzed, and it is concluded that triply excited configurations relative to the 2Po ground state are far less important than previously reported. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Cauchy–Goursat theorem is used to derive a surface integral correction term for the computation of complex scaled potential matrix elements in the sine-based DVR procedure originally proposed by Museth and Leforestier. Test results show that scatter in the complex energy trajectories is removed by including this term. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
