    Notes: Abstract. The blood half-life of a protein is prolonged by conjugating a protein with a linear amphiphilic polymer, monomethoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG). The conjugation gives a protein immunotolerogenicity; hence, it is likely that the long half-life is crucial for the tolerogenicity. We prepared a tolerogenic mPEG conjugate of hen egg lysozyme (mPEG1.5-HEL), which is conjugated 1.5-fold the molecular weight of mPEG against that of HEL, and evaluated the relationship between in vivo stability and the tolerogenicity. mPEG1.5-HEL retained immunogenicity to prime HEL-specific T cell and antibody responses and had a long blood half-life, more than 27 times that of native HEL. The tolerant state was maintained as long as mPEG1.5-HEL was detected in sera. With a decrease in the blood mPEG1.5-HEL level, the tolerant state returned gradually to the responsive state; however, reinjection of mPEG1.5-HEL again restored the tolerance. Thus, the extended blood half-life of HEL by mPEG conjugation is probably vital for establishing and maintaining the tolerant states.

    Notes: Abstract Background. Random systematic biopsy is widely utilized for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The standard method seems to be transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-guided sextant transrectal biopsy. In this study, the results of a TRUS-guided transperineal technique were evaluated. Methods. Between 1993 and 1996, 102 patients were diagnosed with prostate cancer by random systematic transperineal biopsy. Eight cores (four from the ventral side and four from the rectal side) were taken from each patient while the longitudinal section was monitored by TRUS. The lengths of the whole core and the cancerous lesion were measured in each biopsy specimen. The results of systematic biopsy were examined in relation to the findings of digital rectal examination (T category), histological grade, clinical stage, and serum level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Results. The number of positive cores increased with the T category. The percentage of cancers in the biopsy specimens also increased according to T category. In patients without metastasis, there was a weak correlation between the level of serum PSA and the cube of the total lengths of cancerous lesions in the biopsy specimens. Nonpalpable T1 cancers had more positive cores and a greater percentage of cancer on the ventral side, while in palpable cancers, cancerous tissues were found more often and at a greater incidence on the rectal side. Conclusion. There was a correlation between the clinical stage of prostate cancer and the pathological findings of random systematic transperineal biopsy under TRUS guidance.

    Notes: Abstract Immunocytochemical examination for mitochondrial protein and cytochrome oxidase was performed to demonstrate oncocytes in normal adenohypophysis obtained from 28 patients of various age. A small number of solitary large epithelial cells showed intense cytoplasmic granular immunoreactivities for mitochondrial protein and cytochrome oxidase. The proportions of the cells positive for the former and the latter ranged from 0% to 5.9% (mean ± SD; 1.5 ± 1.7%) and from 0% to 4.9% (1.4 ± 1.6%), respectively. These cells were either absent or extremely rare in young patients (under 10 years) but tended to increase in number with age (P 〈 0.0001). On the other hand, the mirror section technique showed that most of these cells were negative for adenohypophysial hormones, but a few of them were faintly positive for: α-subunit (8.0%), β-subunits of follicle-stimulating hormone (4.8%), luteinizing hormone (2.5%), thyroid-stimulating hormone (1.0%), and growth hormone (0.5%), and were negative for prolactin and adrenocorticotropic hormone. We considered that these cells represent oncocytes that exist in varying numbers in normal adenohypophysis. It was suggested that oncocytes in normal adenohypophysis share various common features with tumorous oncocytes of pituitary oncocytomas.

    Notes: Abstract. This study was designed to assess the effect of vitamin K and D supplementation on ovariectomy-induced bone loss. Female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 8–9 months were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham operated and divided into five experimental groups: (1) ovariectomy (OVX), (2) OVX plus vitamin K supplementation, (3) OVX plus vitamin D supplementation, (4) OVX plus vitamin K and vitamin D supplementation, and (5) sham operation. The trabecular bone area was estimated by bone histomorphometry by microradiography and histological examination. Bone loss in OVX plus vitamin K and vitamin D group was significantly reduced at both 7 and 14 weeks compared with the OVX group. No significant bone loss in OVX plus vitamin K or OVX plus vitamin D groups was found. A similar effect of vitamin K and D supplementation on ovariectomy-induced bone loss was recognized in histological examination. Our findings indicate that vitamins K and D may have a synergistic effect on reducing bone loss. This is valuable information for the treatment of bone loss in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

    Notes: Abstract We report a Rathke's cleft cyst which presented as pituitary apoplexy, a rare presentation. A 46-year-old woman suffered sudden headache and visual loss. T1-weighted MRI 3 weeks after this apoplectic episode demonstrated a cystic lesion between the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary, with some high-signal material layering in it. The mass showed spontaneous regression on an image 3 weeks later. Trans-sphenoidal surgery confirmed the diagnosis of a Rathke's cleft cyst with a haematoma within it.

    Notes: Abstract  Seven cases of parietal cephalocele and three cases of occipital cephalocele associated with abnormal venous drainage were evaluated, and the mechanism of the development for venous system was discussed from the embryological viewpoint. In parietal cephaloceles the abnormally draining vein, which corresponds to the straight sinus, ascended along the interhemisphere apart from the tentorium and emptied into the superior sagittal sinus below the cephalocele. The superior sagittal sinus formed the confluence, which was positioned high up. Intraoperative findings revealed that cephalocele penetrated the superior sagittal sinus at the midline. In the case of occipital cephalocele, the straight sinus followed a postero-superior course, to drain into the confluence just above the neck of cephalocele. The results of our study suggest that the causation of abnormal venous drainage in the great vein of Galen, the straight sinus and the superior sagittal sinus may be secondary, through interaction with a developmentally pre-existing cephalocele.

    Notes: Abstract The resistive transition to the superconducting (SC) state in α-(ET)2NH4Hg(SCN)4 was studied under magnetic fields applied parallel to the conducting plane. The SC state is divided into three regions: (1) temperature-dependent resistive region, (2) zero-resistive region, and (3) temperature-independent resistive region. We observed twofold symmetry in the resistance under an in-plane magnetic field near the midpoint of the SC transition, which indicates that the upper critical field μ0 H c2 has the same twofold symmetry. This in-plane anisotropy can be ascribed to the crystal structure.

    Notes: Abstract The de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation was observed in the superconductivity mixed state near the upper critical field H c2 of the two-dimensional organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. By analyzing an additional damping of the oscillation, the superconductivity fluctuation effects near H c2 are elucidated quantitatively as the magnetic field dependence of the mean square of the superconducting gap. By rotating the external magnetic field, the angular dependence of the fluctuation effects and probable values of the H c2 are studied.
