Notes: From analysis of the elastic neutron scattering data of Dolino et al. [J. Phys. (Paris) (1984), 45, 361–371], it is shown that, besides the well identified components u_x and u_y of the acoustic displacements in the incommensurate (IC) phase of quartz, there also exists a strong component of the u_z vector of the modulation. The existence of the large u_z is not consistent with the currently accepted model for the IC transition in quartz, since the long-period IC modulation observed in quartz cannot induce any noticeable acoustic component u_z. The need for a new model is keenly felt in order to understand the origin of the IC modulation in quartz.

Notes: An anamorphic basidiomycetous yeast, which produced a salt-tolerant and thermostable glutaminase, was isolated from soil in Japan and classified in the genus Cryptococcus. Its substrate specificity suggests that this enzyme is an L-glutaminase asparaginase (EC 3.5.1.38). The strain, G60, resembles Cryptococcus laurentii in the taxonomic criteria traditionally employed for yeasts, however it can be distinguished as a separate species based on DNA–DNA reassociation experiments and sequence analysis of the large sub-unit rDNA. Phenotypically, the isolate can be differentiated from C. laurentii by the inability to utilize arbutin as a sole source of carbon. Based on sequence analysis, the strain is related to a group of hymenomycetous yeasts including Bulleromyces albus, Bullera unica, C. laurentii and C. skinneri. The strain, which is formally described as Cryptococcus nodaensis, is industrially important for the formation of the umami taste during production of proteolytic seasonings.

Notes: Abstract. We report a rare case of pseudomyxoma retroperitonei in a 58-year-old woman with a past history of severe appendicitis. The imaging showed a multicystic mass similar to pseudomyxoma peritonei, but the tumor was located in the retroperitoneal space.

Notes: Abstract The present study investigated the effects of a novel benzodiazepine inverse agonist, S-8510 [2-(3-isoxazolyl)-3, 6, 7, 9-tetrahydroimidazo [4, 5-d] pyrano [4,3-b] pyridine monophosphate monohydrate], on the P300 components of the event-related potential (ERP) in monkeys. Late positive potentials (P300-like potentials) from the cortex (Pz) and hippocampus recorded using the auditory oddball paradigm in combination with electrical reinforcement can be measured in rhesus monkeys. The latency of this P300-like potential recorded from the monkey cortex was 330 ms, and the amplitude was 13 μV. It was prolonged in both the cortex (Pz) and hippocampus by SC injection of 10 μg/kg scopolamine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist. Oral administration of S-8510 (3, 10 mg/kg) had no effect on the latency in normal monkeys. However, S-8510 reversed the scopolamine-induced prolongation of P300-like potentials on the cortex (Pz) and hippocampus. These results show that S-8510 can attenuate the effects induced by scopolamine on P300-like potentials associated with cognitive function in monkeys, suggesting that S-8510 may be useful as a therapeutic drug in disease-associated cognitive dysfunctions of the central nervous system.

Notes: Abstract We researched the efficiency of cooperative behavior using interacting multirobots. In this paper, we assume simple robots with a drive system and the simplest means of interaction, and examine the collective behavior through the task of gathering pucks in a field. The efficiency of group behavior is evaluated by the relation between the number of robots and the task completion time. To evaluate the efficiency of group behavior, we measure the exponent β, which is obtained from the scaling relation between the task completion time and the number of robots. The effectiveness of group behavior is investigated for fractal distributions of pucks. We research their behavior for fractal distributions of pucks and find out that the optimum value of β depends on the dimension of the puck distributions. We also propose a simplified state transition diagram of the group to analyse their characteristics. These results enable us to describe the condition of the field by a variable in the state transition diagram.
