Notes: Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we have observed the absorption spectra of holes bound to acceptors in bulk ZnSe below 100 K. The absorption is assigned to hole transition of Li acceptors from the 1S3/2 ground state to the 2P3/2 excited state. The obtained transition energy of 72.9±0.1 meV is one order more precise than that obtained by photoluminescence measurements. In addition, absorption lines due to shallow donors are observed below 30 K, and the intensity is enhanced by excitation with a blue light emitting diode. The 1s–2p transition energies of three kinds of donors Al, Cl, and In are estimated at 18.96, 19.64, and 21.67 meV, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fracture characteristics of high-strength steel ASTM A-490 under a hydrogen environment were investigated, with special emphasis placed on changes in fracture characteristics due to a tempering treatment at temperatures from 200 to 400 °C. A mechanical test was performed on cathodically charged specimens subjected to a constant load. Experimental analyses show that tempering treatment in the range from 200 to 400 °C does not alter the essential nature of delayed fracture due to crack growth. However, the role of intergranular (IG) cracking becomes prominent in the subcritical crack growth period with an increase in the tempering temperature to 400 °C. This development of IG cracks in the subcritical crack growth period is uniquely dependent on the tempering treatment performed in the tempering range from 250 to 400 °C. Furthermore, an increase in the fraction of the IG facet in the subcritical crack growth area is dependent on the increase in the stress intensity at the crack tip in those specimens tempered at 300 and 400 °C.

Notes: Summary To assess the role of polymorphisms in the β2-adrenergic receptor gene in the development of obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders, we analysed Arg16Gly, Gln27Glu, and Thr164Ile polymorphisms in 400 non-obese subjects (body mass index 〈 27 kg/m2) and 108 obese subjects (body mass index ≥ 27 kg/m2). The Gln27Glu substitution was twice as common in obese subjects as in non-obese subjects (0.14 vs 0.07, p = 0.001, odds ratio 2.14, 95 % confidence interval 1.35–3.41). The frequency of the Glu27 allele was also higher in patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus than non-diabetic subjects (0.14 vs 0.07, p = 0.001, odds ratio 2.13, 95 % confidence interval 1.34–3.41). Analysis of variance of multiple variables showed an association between 2-h post-load glucose concentrations and body mass index but not with the Glu27 variant, suggesting that the association with diabetes could be secondary to obesity. Obese subjects carrying the variant allele had higher concentrations of serum triglyceride than obese subjects homozygous for the wild type allele (2.68 ± 1.90 vs 1.18 ± 1.15 mmol/l, p = 0.02). Conversely, the frequency of Gly16 homozygotes was lower in obese women when compared with non-obese women (11 % vs 28 %, p = 0.01, odds ratio 0.30, 95 % confidence interval 0.12–0.75), although the association was not present in male subjects. Thr164Ile substitution was not detected in the subjects of this study. These observations suggest that the amino-terminal polymorphisms of the β2-adrenergic receptor gene could be involved in the molecular pathogenesis of obesity and hypertriglyceridaemia, and thereby the development of Type II diabetes mellitus. Notes: Summary  We treated 9 patients with the dural arteriovenous fistula involving the cavernous sinus by transvenous embolization. Two patients experienced deterioration of oculo-motor dysfunction after transvenous embolization. We can speculate about two different kind of causes by which patients symptoms deteriorated according to the result of intrasinus pressure recorded during the embolization [1]: high intrasinus pressure caused by the obliteration of the drainage pathway resulted in cranial nerve palsy in one case [2]; implanted coils directly compressed the cranial nerve in another case. Fortunately our cases recovered, but some kind of preventative measures may be needed in similar cases.

Notes: Abstract Branch migration of Holliday junctions, which are central DNA intermediates in homologous recombination, is promoted by the RuvA-RuvB protein complex, and the junctions are resolved by the action of the RuvC protein in Escherichia coli. We report here the cloning of the ruvB gene from a thermophilic eubacterium, Thermus thermophilus HB8 (Tth), and the biochemical characterization of the gene product expressed in E. coli. The Tth ruvB gene could not complement the UV sensitivity of an E. coli ruvB deletion mutant and made the wild-type strain more sensitive to UV. In contrast to E. coli RuvB, whose ATPase activity is strongly enhanced by supercoiled DNA but only weakly enhanced by linear duplex DNA, the ATPase activity of Tth RuvB was efficiently and equally enhanced by supercoiled and linear duplex DNA. Tth RuvB hydrolyzed a broader range of nucleoside triphosphates than E. coli RuvB. In addition, Tth RuvB, in the absence of RuvA protein, promoted branch migration of a synthetic Holliday junction at 60° C in an ATP-dependent manner. The protein, as judged by its ATPase activity, required ATP for thermostability. Since a RuvA protein has not yet been identified in T. thermophilus, we used E. coli RuvA to examine the effects of RuvA on the activities of Tth RuvB. E. coli RuvA greatly enhanced the ability of Tth RuvB to hydrolyze ATP in the presence of DNA and to promote branch migration of a synthetic Holliday junction at 37° C. These results indicate the conservation of the RuvA-RuvB interaction in different bacterial species, and suggest the existence of a ruvA homolog in T. thermophilus. Although GTP and dGTP were efficiently hydrolyzed by Tth RuvB, these nucleoside triphosphates could not be utilized for branch migration in vitro, implying that the conformational change in RuvB brought about by ATP hydrolysis, which is necessary for driving the Holliday junction branch migration, cannot be accomplished by the hydrolysis of these nucleoside triphosphates.

Notes: Abstract. The allelopathy of a serious weed, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.), was investigated. Root exudates of young barnyard grass showed allelopathic effects and plant-selective activity and inhibited root elongation of all plants tested. With respect to shoot growth, the exudates did not show inhibition of barnyard grass only. The allelopathic substance was isolated and identified as p-hydroxymandelic acid by NMR. p-Hydroxymandelic acid strongly inhibited shoot growth and root elongation of all plants tested. The effects of three congeners of p-hydroxymandelic acid were tested on rice shoot growth. In the biological activity exhibited in rice, shoot growth was related to the hydroxyl groups.

Notes: Abstract Uphill transport of organic electrolytes, benzoic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid, was examined using polyethylene films photografted with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMA). The transport fractions had the maximum values around the grafted amount of 5.0 mmol/g at which the ungrafted layers in the inside of DMA-grafted PE (PE-g-PDMA) films disappeared. Uphill transport of organic anions from the acidic to the alkaline sides occurred most favorably only when the initial pH value in the alkaline side was adjusted to 12.0 while the initial pH values in the acidic side agreed to the pH values of each aqueous solution of the organic electrolytes at 10 mmol/dm3. Under these conditions each organic electrolyte was concentrated by 1.7–1.8 times the initial concentration. In case either the initial H+ or OH- ion concentration was too high or low, the transport fractions of organic anions decreased. When the initial pH value in the acidic side was decreased to 1.5, p-aminobenzoic electrolytes were transported from the alkaline to the acidic sides and the transport fraction amounted to 80%. It was experimentally confirmed that the pH difference across the PE-g-PDMA films was a driving force for uphill transport of organic anions.
