    Notes: A power supply for "triggerless," repetitively pulsed cathodic arcs has been developed. It is based on a thyristor-switched, high-voltage, high-current, pulse-forming network (PFN). It can provide high pulsed currents (up to 2 kA), with duration of 600 μs, and pulse repetition rate of up to 10 Hz. Higher repetition rates are possible at lower current. The rectangular pulse shape and amplitude are reproducible to within a few percent. Cathodic arc initiation is extremely reliable because the charging voltage is much higher than the minimum starting voltage for the triggerless arc initiation method. The energy utilization efficiency is very high by intentionally mismatching load and PFN impedances and by using an efficiency-enhancing diode; the stored energy is dissipated primarily in the arc.

    Notes: Abstract : Diffuse axonal injury is a primary feature of head traumaand is one of the most frequent causes of mortality and morbidity. Diffuseaxonal injury is microscopic in nature and difficult or impossible to detectwith imaging techniques. The objective of the present study was to determinewhether axonal injury in head trauma patients could be quantified by measuringlevels of CSF tau proteins. Tau proteins are structural microtubule bindingproteins primarily localized in the axonal compartment of neurons. Monoclonalantibodies recognizing the form of tau found in the CSF of head traumapatients were developed by differential CSF hybridoma screening using CSF fromhead trauma and control patients. Clones positive for head trauma CSF tauproteins were used to characterize this form of tau and for ELISA development.Using the developed ELISA, CSF tau levels were elevated 〉1,000-fold in headtrauma patients (mean, 1,519 ng/ml of CSF) when compared with patients withmultiple sclerosis (mean, 0.014 ng/ml of CSF ; p 〈 0.001), normalpressure hydrocephalus (nondetectable CSF tau), neurologic controls (mean,0.031 ng/ml of CSF ; p 〈 0.001), or nonneurologic controls(nondetectable CSF tau ; p 〈 0.001). In head trauma, a relationship between clinical improvement and decreased CSF tau levels was observed. These data suggest that CSF tau levels may prove a clinically useful assay for quantifying the axonal injury associated with head trauma and monitoring efficacy of neuroprotective agents. Affinity purification of CSF tau from head trauma patients indicated a uniform cleavage of ~ 18 kDa from all six tau isoforms, reducing their apparent molecular sizes to 30-50 kDa. These cleaved forms of CSF tau consisted of the interior portion of the tau sequence, including the microtubule binding domain, as judged by cyanogen bromide digestion. Consistent with these data, CSF cleaved tau bound taxolpolymerized microtubules, indicating a functionally intact microtubule binding domain. Furthermore, epitope mapping studies suggested that CSF cleaved tau proteins consist of the interior portion of the tau sequence with cleavage at both N and C terminals.

    Notes: Abstract Current computer simulations of biomolecules typically make use of classical molecular dynamics methods, as a very large number (tens to hundreds of thousands) of atoms are involved over timescales of many nanoseconds. The methodology for treating short-range bonded and van der Waals interactions has matured. However, long-range electrostatic interactions still represent a bottleneck in simulations. In this article, we introduce the basic issues for an accurate representation of the relevant electrostatic interactions. In spite of the huge computational time demanded by most biomolecular systems, it is no longer necessary to resort to uncontrolled approximations such as the use of cutoffs. In particular, we discuss the Ewald summation methods, the fast particle mesh methods, and the fast multipole methods. We also review recent efforts to understand the role of boundary conditions in systems with long-range interactions, and conclude with a short perspective on future trends.

    Notes: A goniometric optical scatter instrument has been developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology which can readily perform measurements of optical scatter and its associated polarization in directions out of the plane of incidence. In this article the coordinate transformations that are required to operate such a goniometer with respect to sample-specific coordinates are described. We present new methods for measuring the 3×3 nonhanded Mueller matrix elements using dual rotating half-wave retarders, and present a subset of the Mueller matrix, referred to as the bidirectional ellipsometric parameters which have been shown to simplify the interpretation of the data. The results of out-of-plane Mueller matrix and bidirectional ellipsometric measurements from a titanium nitride layer on silicon are presented.

    Notes: By extending the concept of Euler-angle rotations to more than three dimensions, we develop the systematics under rotations in higher-dimensional space for a novel set of hyperspherical harmonics. Applying this formalism, we determine all pairwise Coulomb interactions in a few-body system without recourse to multipole expansions. Our approach combines the advantages of relative coordinates with those of the hyperspherical description. In the present method, each Coulomb matrix element reduces to the "1/r" form familiar from the two-body problem. Consequently, our calculation accounts for all the cusps in the wave function whenever an interparticle separation vanishes. Unlike a truncated multipole expansion, the calculation presented here is exact. Following the systematic development of the procedure for an arbitrary number of particles, we demonstrate it explicitly with the simplest nontrivial example, the three-body system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This letter describes a fiber Bragg grating device that has tunable chirp. It relies on a distributed on-fiber resistive heater that consists of a thin metal film deposited onto the outer surface of a bare fiber; the thickness of this film varies continuously with position along the fiber. The physics of heat flow and diffusion in these structures leads to temperature gradients that follow, to a remarkably good approximation, the local resistance of the tapered metal film. This temperature distribution produces a chirp with a geometry that is defined by the thickness profile of the film and at a rate that can be adjusted by changing the current. Finite element modeling illuminates aspects of the flow of heat in these structures, and optical measurements demonstrate important characteristics of the devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We consider the Langevin dynamics of a semi-dilute system of chains which are random polyampholytes of average monomer charge q and with fluctuations in this charge of size Q−1 and with freely floating counter-ions in the surrounding. We cast the dynamics into the functional integral formalism and average over the quenched charge distribution in order to compute the dynamic structure factor and the effective collective potential matrix. The results are given for small charge fluctuations. In the limit of finite q we then find that the scattering approaches the limit of polyelectrolyte solutions. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
