Notes: Destruction of benzene in a benzene/Ar mixture subjected to a pulsed glow discharge was studied. The destruction efficiency was much improved compared to a dc glow discharge, and the destruction efficiency increased with decreasing pulse width at a constant pulse frequency. Diagnostics experiments were conducted to elucidate the destruction mechanisms involved. The results show that excitation transfer from the metastable states of Ar to benzene in the afterglow of the discharge was primarily responsible for the destruction of benzene. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effects of shear on the potential energy landscape are examined with regard to the mechanical properties of ductile glasses. Shear strain is found to cause the disappearance of local potential energy minima, rendering the system mechanically unstable and forcing the system to move to alternate local minima. These mechanical instabilities are characterized by the decrease to zero of several features of the potential energy landscape: a barrier height, the curvature at both the barrier and the local minimum, and the distance from the barrier to the local minimum. From an analysis of the results of different size systems, the mechanical instabilities are shown to be localized to a small number of atoms. The consequences of the mechanical instabilities on the mechanical properties are stress drops which give rise to the yielding and plastic-flow behavior characteristic of ductile glasses; these stress drops are discontinuous at the molecular level, but become continuous at the macroscopic level. A simple model is developed which demonstrates that different stress–strain behaviors are obtained as the characteristics of the mechanical instabilities change. This simple model is also used to elucidate the effects of temperature on the mechanical properties. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Boat-based photoidentification surveys of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were conducted from 1982 to 1989 in three discrete coastal study areas within the Southern California Bight: (1) Santa Barbara, California; (2) Orange County, California; (3) Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. A total of 207 recognizable dolphins were identified in these three “secondary” study areas. These individuals were compared to 404 dolphins identified from 1981 to 1989 in our “primary” study area, San Diego, California, to examine the coastal movement patterns of bottlenose dolphins within the Southern California Bight. A high proportion of dolphins photographed in Santa Barbara (88%), Orange County (92%), and Ensenada (88%) were also photographed in San Diego. Fifty-eight percent (n= 120) of these 207 dolphins exhibited back-and-forth movements between study areas, with no evidence of site fidelity to any particular region. Minimum range estimates were 50 and 470 km. Minimum travel-speed estimates were 11-47 km/d, and all dolphin schools sighted during the study were within 1 km of the shore. These data suggest that bottlenose dolphins within the Southern California Bight are highly mobile within a relatively narrow coastal zone. Home-range dimensions and movement patterns for many vettebrate species are influenced, in part, by variation in food resources. The unique range characteristics documented during this study may reflect the highly dynamic nature of this coastal ecosystem and the associated patchy distribution of food resources available to these bottlenose dolphins.

Notes: Suggests this analysis' principal objective is to demonstrate that recent merger activity in US Bell operating companies can foster increased incentives for out-of-region entry. Reveals that the local telephone industry can serve to enhance competition by fostering more pronounced incentives for out-of-region entry.

Notes: Elaborates on forthcoming change in the US telecoms industry. Wonders how competitors will be allowed to compete. Urges that regulators must focus on protecting competition and not competitors. In conclusion, reckons that consumers are best served by laws and regulations that protect the competitive process - not the competitors themselves.

Notes: We describe an unusual complication of single-lead VDD pacing: recurrent advancement of the atrial bipole into the right ventricle. As a consequence, the patient experienced symptomatic pacemaker-mediated tachycardia and underwent two revision operations to achieve adequate fixation of the lead.

Notes: The defibrillation threshold is markedly reduced very early following the initiation of ventricular fibrillation. The purpose of this study was to determine if the same finding holds true for atrial defibrillation. Sustained, reproducible AF was induced with programmed atrial pacing using acetyl-β-methylcholine chloride (40–640 μL/min) in six adult sheep (heart weight 245–300 g). Seven timing intervals (125 ms, 200 ms, 1 s, 3 s, 10 s, 30 s, and 5 min after AF induction) and two lead configurations: (1) RA as cathode and CS as anode; and (2) RA as cathode and RV apex as anode were tested. Single capacitor biphasic waveforms (3/1 ms) were delivered and atrial defibrillation thresholds (ADFTs) were determined in random order. No significant differences in leading edge voltage and total energy were detected for the RA-CS configuration for the seven timing intervals. For the RA-RV configuration, a significant difference was detected comparing the voltage for 125 ms to the 5-minute timing interval. For all times except 125 ms, the RA-RV threshold was significantly higher than the RA-CS level. In contrast to ventricular defibrillation, the ADFT does not change significantly within the first 5 minutes after the initiation of AF for the RA-CS configuration. However, if the shock is given very early (125 ms after AF induction) with the RA-RV configuration, the ADFT is lowered almost to the RA-CS level.

Notes: Clinically isolated group A streptococci (GAS) of different M protein types were studied using aminoglycoside exclusion and [2,8-3H]adenine radiolabeled GAS assays to compare the abilities of different strains to adhere to and internalize within human laryngeal epithelial (HEp-2) cells. GAS isolated from patients with pharyngitis and GAS isolated from patients with more severe disease, such as necrotizing fasciitis, adhered to and penetrated HEp-2 cells equally well. M3, M4, M6, and M12 strains adhered to and were internalized within HEp-2 cells more than M1 strains. M18 GAS producing hyaluronic acid capsules were less adherent and less invasive than the M3, M4, M6, and M12 strains. An M3-producing GAS strain and its M protein-deficient isogenic strain adhered similarly to HEp-2 cells, but the M protein-deficient strain exhibited greater penetration. Preincubation of HEp-2 cells with an N-terminal synthetic M3 peptide did not alter the adherence or penetration by an M3 strain. In summary, this study demonstrates that GAS from invasive and non-invasive disease adhere to and penetrate HEp-2 cells equally well and that multiple strains of GAS with various M protein types have the ability to adhere to and penetrate HEp-2 cells.
