    Notes: In this article the fabrication and characterization of two thermally actuated optical devices for the measurement of temperature and power are described. A transparent polymer having a high coefficient of thermal expansion—poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)—was used as the temperature-sensitive medium. Changes in the dimensions of the polymer on heating caused the observed optical responses of both devices. The temperature sensor based on the Fabry–Pérot cavity measures temperature differences to a precision of 0.005 °C within the linear working ranges of the device. The power sensor uses the architecture of a Mach–Zender interferometer; it is suitable for measurements of powers in the mW/cm2 range, delivered optically to the surface of the device in the visible wavelength region. The devices are inexpensive, easy to fabricate, and mechanically rugged. They offer alternatives to other sensors for measuring temperature and power. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Patterned polymer films were grown on SiO2/Si surfaces by a process starting with microcontact printing (μCP) of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), formation of a monolayer derived from norbornenyl trichlorosilane (Nbn–SiCl3) in areas not protected by OTS, activation of the surfaces derived from Nbn–SiCl3 with a ruthenium catalyst, and surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization of derivatives of norbornene by the catalytically active ruthenium species. These patterned polymer films were successfully used as reactive ion etching resists. The combination of μCP and surface-initiated polymerization makes possible molecular-level control of polymer composition and thickness in both lateral and vertical directions: the smallest patterned lateral features were 2 μm lines; this width was determined by the features of the stamp used in μCP and is not the intrinsic limit of the method. The thickness of the polymer film was, typically, 5–100 nm and could be controlled by monomer concentration and reaction time. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This letter describes a technique for generating waves on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) patterned in bas-relief. The PDMS is heated, and its surface oxidized in an oxygen plasma; this oxidation forms a thin, stiff silicate layer on the surface. When the PDMS cools, it contracts and places the silicate layer under compressive stress. This stress is relieved by buckling to form patterns of waves with wavelengths from 0.5 to 10 μm. The waves are locally ordered near a step or edge in the PDMS. The wavelength, amplitude, and pattern of the waves can be controlled by controlling the temperature of the PDMS and the duration of the oxidation. The mechanism for the formation and order of the waves is described. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The assessment of information systems (IS) benefits is an important practical problem in IS investment appraisal. After briefly reviewing the nature of IS benefits, we argue that an incremental measurement approach can help an organisation obtain quantitative estimates of expected IS impacts on business performance. Such an approach should start from quantifiable benefits directly attributable to the information system and then gradually consider more intangible and indirect effects. We suggest that Business Process Simulation can be an effective technique in applying this approach and we present a methodology that incorporates incremental, iterative business process modelling and simulation into five practical steps. To illustrate this approach, we present a case of measuring the potential improvements in inventory management introduced by electronic data interchange and discuss issues of feasibility and directions for further research and development.

    Notes: 1. Phenothiazine use in infants has been implicated in apparent life-threatening events, sleep apnoea and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.2. The aim of this study was to investigate the cumulative effects of a commonly used antihistamine medication containing promethazine on airway protective mechanisms and cardiorespiratory responses in 42 healthy neonatal piglets (21 naturally sleeping, 21 sedated sleeping).3. Sedated piglets were given 1.5 mg/kg, p.o., promethazine 2 h prior to each recording session. Control animals slept naturally with no sedative given. On three consecutive days in all piglets, physiological recordings were made during sleep; on at least one of these days, simultaneous physiological and radiological observations were made.4. Following sedation, sleep time and time in active sleep were increased significantly (P 〈 0.01). The spontaneous occurrence of swallowing, arousal, body movement, gastro-oesophageal reflux and apnoea was compared between naturally and sedated sleeping piglets. Sedation with promethazine significantly decreased the spontaneous occurrence of swallowing (P 〈 0.05) and arousal (P 〈 0.05) and increased the occurrence of both central (P 〈 0.05) and obstructive sleep apnoea (P 〈 0.0001).5. By the third day, a cumulative effect of promethazine was seen; the rate of swallowing and body movement significantly decreased (P 〈 0.01).6. In summary, a low dose of promethazine profoundly altered sleep characteristics, airway protective mechanisms and cardiorespiratory responses in normal healthy sleeping piglets. Continued use of promethazine over several days may attenuate airway protective mechanisms to a potentially life-threatening degree. Our findings support continued caution in the use of promethazine-containing medications for the sedation of infants.
