    Notes: We measured anti-Stokes fluorescence cooling (optical refrigeration) in ytterbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). Pumping the 2.3% Yb3+:YAG crystal with 1.8 W of 1030 nm laser light produced a temperature drop of 8.9 °C from room temperature. The high thermal conductivity and ruggedness of this crystal make it an attractive material for use in optical refrigerators. Our spectral studies show that pure crystals of this material could be efficient for optical refrigeration at temperatures above ∼100 K. Photothermal deflection measurements show that our current crystals can cool at ∼250 K. Additionally, we measured optical refrigeration in a 5% Yb3+:Y2SiO5 crystal when pumped at 1050 nm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A definitive set of the Los Alamos Hugoniot data for iron in a pressure regime extending to 442 GPa is given. Earlier standards data, obtained using conventional explosive systems, were thoroughly reprocessed. All original film records were reread. On the basis of more recent experiment and theory, some data were culled because the experimental designs were found to be insufficiently conservative. The analysis was also modified to take into account preheating of the explosively driven flyer plates. Minor clerical errors in transcription of measurements were corrected. An improved algorithm for the flash-gap time correction was incorporated. Higher-pressure data were obtained using a conventional 13-pin target assembly on a two-stage light gas gun. Several polynomial representations of the data are given. A linear fit to the data (Us=3.935+1.578 Up, where the shock velocity Us and the particle velocity Up are in km/s) has a root-mean-square misfit of 62 m/s. The quadratic fit (Us=3.691+1.788 Up−0.038 Up2) has a root-mean-square misfit of 39 m/s. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The quality of the pseudopotential approximation has been tested thoroughly by calculating spectroscopic properties of the gold atom and ground state AuH for eight different effective core potentials using Hartree–Fock, second-order Møller–Plesset and coupled cluster methods. The pseudopotential valence basis set {cursive-phi}v for Au was chosen to be identical for all pseudopotentials, a subset of the all-electron basis set {cursive-phi}v⊂{cursive-phi}AE, and the condition was applied that all sets are of near basis set limit quality. The pseudopotential results are compared with data obtained from nonrelativistic, scalar relativistic Douglas–Kroll and fully relativistic four-component all-electron calculations. The variation between the results obtained for all valence electron small-core pseudopotentials and all electron Douglas–Kroll calculations is found to be small (for the Stuttgart pseudopotential Δre=0.001 Å, ΔDe=0.03 eV, Δωe=9 cm−1, Δμe=0.04 D). Sizable differences to all electron results are only found for the 11 valence electron large-core pseudopotentials. The effects of the basis set superposition error on spectroscopic constants were investigated. Calculated coupled cluster electron affinities and ionization potentials for gold and spectroscopic properties for AuH were found to be in excellent agreement with available experimental data. The variation between the different small-core pseudopotentials for one particular spectroscopic property is shown to be less than the error due to the incompleteness of electron correlation procedure or the basis set and approximately of the same size as the basis set superposition error. The results show that scalar relativistic effects for valence properties are perfectly described by the pseudopotential approximation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Field trials in two cropping seasons and two locations in central China were conducted on 60 Chinese autumn-sown wheat varieties to assess their partial resistance to powdery mildew. Mean levels of disease severity ranged from close to 0 to more than 90%. The method of inoculation and the location in which trials were conducted affected the relative performance of the varieties, but these effects were much smaller than the main effect of variety. The area under the disease progress curve was highly correlated with final disease severity, but both were poorly correlated with apparent infection rate. Disease severity was regressed against frequencies of virulence in the Blumeria graminis (syn. Erysiphe graminis) f sp. tritici populations in the trial plots. A vertical distance (D) from the mean mildew severity to the fitted line was calculated for each variety and was used to quantify partial resistance. Five of the 60 varieties, ‘Hx8541’, ‘E28547’, ‘Chuan1066’, ‘Zhe88pin6’ and ‘Lin5064’, consistently expressed relatively low levels of disease despite high frequencies of virulence in the pathogen and had consistently high D-values. They may therefore have good levels of partial resistance.

    Notes: Abstract: The neurological system plays an important role in modulating some inflammatory skin diseases. Neuro-cutaneous interactions may be mediated by the release of neuropeptides such as substance P (SP) which activate immunocompetent cells in the skin by binding to high affinity neurokinin receptors (NKR). Since epidermal keratinocytes produce a variety of cytokines and are intimately associated with cutaneous sensory fibers, we tested the ability of these cells to participate in the cutaneous neuroimmune system by the secretion of potent cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1) in response to released SP. RT-PCR studies demonstrated that cultured PAM 212 murine keratinocytes expressed mRNA for NK-2R but not NK-1R. Correspondingly, the addition of SP to these cells resulted in a rapid increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels that could be specifically blocked by an NK-2R antagonist. NK-2R was also shown in normal mouse epidermis by immunohistochemistry. SP augmented the expression of PAM 212 keratinocyte IL-1α mRNA in a dose and time dependent manner and this induction was inhibited by an NK-2R antagonist. Secretion of bioactive IL-1α by the PAM 212 keratinocytes was likewise stimulated by SP in a dose dependent manner. These data support the hypothesis that SP released from cutaneous sensory nerves contributes to neuroimmune inflammatory responses in the skin by modulating the expression and release of cytokines from epidermal keratinocytes.

    Notes: Yellowtail flounder Pleuronectes ferrugineus (Storer) have been identified as a potential species for coldwater aquaculture along the north-east coast of Canada. It has been shown that increased photoperiods improve growth and survival during the larval stage of this species. We conducted two experiments to determine the effect of photoperiod on the growth and survival of juveniles. The first experiment compared growth and survival under 24-, 18- and 12-h lighting per day with a restricted food ration. The second experiment compared growth and survival rates under the above photoperiods and ambient lighting with fish being fed to satiation. No significant differences in growth or survival were found in juveniles under the different photoperiods in either experiment.

    Notes: Rapid transfer of zander Stizostedion lucioperca to hypoosmotic brackish water (mean osmolality 230 mOsmol kg–1, c. 8 psu) significantly increased plasma chloride concentrations after 24 h compared to those transferred to fresh water, although plasma osmolality was not significantly affected. After 6 days, plasma osmolality was slightly elevated but stable plasma glucose and cortisol concentrations and blood haematocrit and haemoglobin suggest a lack of hormonal stress responses and resultant secondary effects. Rapid transfer of zander to a more saline environment, hyperosmotic to plasma (mean osmolality 462 mOsmol kg-1, c. 16 psu) induced a greater increase in plasma osmolality and chloride concentrations within 24 h, with a further rise after 6 days exposure, but all fish maintained a state of hypo-osmoregulation both 24 h and 6 days after transfer. The initial osmotic disturbance (at 24 h) was accompanied by increased plasma glucose, blood haematocrit and haemoglobin and a decreased mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), suggesting an adrenergic stress response, but these parameters fully recovered within 6 days of exposure to this hyperosmotic environment with MCHC rising to exceed the level in freshwater fish. Zander did not survive rapid transfer to more hyperosmotic conditions (750 or 1001 mOsmol kg-1, 26-35 psu), but they did survive exposure to simulated‘tidal cycles’ of rising and declining salinity, peaking after 6 h at c. 29 or 33 psu. Although osmotic disturbance was apparent after 6 h exposure and other physiological parameters suggested both adrenergic and corticosteroid components of a stress response, rapid recovery was apparent after return to fresh water. The results indicate that the zander, a non-indigenous species in the U.K., has a high level of osmotic tolerance and a degree of hypo-osmoregulation in saline environments not found in most stenohaline freshwater teleosts. This osmoregulatory ability could enable invasion of new U.K. river systems by using inshore marine environments of low salinity as saltwater bridges.

    Notes: Growth, survival and condition of redfish larvae Sebastes spp., reared in the laboratory (0, 500 1500 and 4500 prey l-1) were highest in the 1500 prey l-1 treatment. Significantly lower larval growth and survival in the 4500 prey l-1 treatment corresponded with lower prey bite: orient ratios in later weeks, suggesting that larvae were unable to forage efficiently at high prey densities. While these prey densities are higher than those reported in the field, naturally co-occurring Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae require higher prey densities when reared under similar conditions in the laboratory. These data suggest that prey availability may not be as limiting to redfish as for other commercially important marine species.

    Notes: Large eggs (1·38 mm) of Atlantic cod reared in the laboratory produced large larvae. However, large larvae had low survival rates. Results also indicated that the first few days' of growth of cod larvae mainly resulted in an increase in mass. Exogenous feeding tended to result in faster growth than endogenous feeding. In the delayed feeding groups (larvae not fed until 67 degree-days), larvae from large eggs grew faster than those from small eggs (1·28 mm) after feeding commenced, while there was no significant difference in growth rate within feeding groups. Compensatory growth was detected in the delayed feeding groups.
