Notes: Two adult patients of leprosy, one woman and one man, presented with a clinical picture simulating sporotrichosis. The skin and regional nerve trunk was affected in one, and in the other the disease was confined to the nerve. Both had features of an upgrading reaction following anti-leprosy therapy; this was seen as erosion and scarring of the plaque, and acute onset of abscesses along the easily palpable and thickened nerve that ruptured through the skin. The diagnosis was supported by histopathology. In the light of other infections that give rise to a sporotrichoid pattern of infection it is concluded that leprosy should also be included in this category so that early diagnosis and use of corticosteroids can be implemented quickly to prevent nerve destruction.

Notes: Abstract To examine the synthesis and phosphorylation of androgen receptor (AR) and their regulation by sex steroids, adult (24 weeks) and old (65 weeks) male and female mice were gonadectomized and administered with testosterone and estradiol. AR amount, synthesis and phosphorylation were measured in the brain cortex by immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation using antibody raised against rat AR transactivation domain (TAD) which was expressed in E. coli as a fusion protein. We found that the amount of AR was high in adult and declined in old mice of both sexes. Administration of testosterone and estradiol significantly down-regulated the level of AR in old male and adult female. Similarly, the rate of AR synthesis also declined with age. Exogenous treatment of gonadectomized mice with testosterone and estradiol reduced the extent of synthesis significantly in all groups except in old female. No sex-dependent variation was noticed either in the level or synthesis of AR. In contrast, the extent of phosphorylation was higher in old mice of both sexes as compared to their adult counterparts. Testosterone and estradiol supplementation resulted in remarkable increase in AR phosphorylation in all groups. Thus it is evident from our findings that the amount and synthesis of AR decrease but phosphorylation of AR increases in the brain cortex with advancing age of mice and they are regulated by testosterone and estradiol in age and sex-specific manner.

Notes: Abstract The superplastic data for several microcrystalline and submicrocrystalline TiAl alloys has been analyzed to establish the rate controlling mechanism. The results show that the lattice diffusion controlled slip-accommodated grain boundary sliding mechanism is operative for the entire grain size range, 150 nm–20 μm. The detail of the nature of α2 phase, i.e. ordered or disordered, does not influence the kinetics of superplastic flow. The optimum superplastic temperature decreases with the decrease in grain size. The optimum superplastic flow stress shows an intrinsic inverse dependence on the grain size. This grain size dependence of the optimum superplastic flow stress can be explained as the stress required to nucleate dislocations from grain boundary edge during slip accommodation of grain boundary sliding. Superplasticity in nanocrystalline TiAl remains an intriguing possibility because it has the potential for increasing the optimal superplastic strain rate or alternatively, decreasing the superplastic forming temperatures.

Notes: Abstract  Deep weathering, residual material (colluvium) and random rainfall intensity are mainly responsible for landslides in tropical monsoon regions. These parameters are often not taken into consideration in a landslide susceptibility assessment. Sustainable resources development in this region requires information on the spatial distribution of areas susceptible to landslides. This study highlights various aspects of the landslides that take place on the west coast of India and a methodology developed for landslide susceptibility mapping.

Notes: Abstract In the context of open thermodynamic systems, we study in this paper the evolution of Bianchi cosmologies with time-dependent bulk viscosity and particle production. The possibility of an initial non-singularity occurs with a suitable choice of parameters as seen in the case of FRW models [Desikan, K. (1997). Gen. Rel. Grav. 29, 435.].

Notes: Abstract Cosmologies with variable G and Λ are developed in this paper from an action principle, and some exact cosmological models are presented. These models indicate that the era of variable G and Λ must have occurred, if at all, prior to other possible eras like radiation and dust.
