    Notes: We describe the design and operation of a tunable, picosecond laser system for use in time-resolved spectroscopic measurements in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) spectral region. The laser is designed for fine tuning and high wavelength stability. A Nd:YAG-pumped distributed-feedback dye laser (DFDL) generates pulses that are ∼100 ps in duration with a nearly transform-limited linewidth (∼5 GHz) at a 20 Hz repetition rate. The DFDL pulses are amplified in two bow-tie amplifiers, providing pulse energies of up to 3.0 mJ; the amplified pulses may be frequency doubled to the UV spectral region, providing up to 1.0 mJ. The DFDL wavelength is computer stabilized to within ±0.8 pm (±0.7 GHz, two standard deviations), allowing the wavelength to be stationed on a narrow atomic or molecular transition or permitting nearly continuous spectral scans. Application of the laser system to studies of OH energy transfer has been demonstrated; both laser-induced-fluorescence and degenerate-four-wave-mixing spectra have been recorded. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A mechanical activation technique has been used to form composites of alumina with titanium carbide, nitride, or carbonitride, both with and without elemental iron. The composites were formed by reacting elemental aluminum with either ilmenite (FeTiO3) or rutile (TiO2) concentrates in the presence of carbon and/or nitrogen in a ball-mill at ambient temperature. The reaction was complete for the ilmenite samples after milling but was completed only for rutile under hot pressing conditions. Microhardness measurements indicated that the composites had hardnesses in the range 19–30 GPa (1740–2750 VHN), with only a small variation within each sample. Elemental mapping of the pressed pellets indicated that titanium and aluminum were evenly distributed on a submicrometer level whereas iron tended to coalesce into 〈20 μm particles in the presence of TiC. The coalescence decreased with the carbon content of the hard material until iron was evenly distributed with TiN. A superstoichiometric amount of aluminum led to the formation of iron–aluminum phases which decreased the iron coalescence. The XRD crystallite size of the alumina was 30–50 nm and was 25–50 nm for the titanium phases, confirming the extremely fine microstructure.

    Notes: Bilateral trade flows are examined to investigate whether trade patterns are consistent with a simple model of trade in differentiated products. In contrast to previous results in the literature, it is shown that the simple model of trade in differentiated products is often not appropriate for trade among the poor nations. Demand differences among the poor countries are shown to be at least a partial explanation for the deviations from the theoretical predictions.

    Notes: An expression for the nonadditive first-order exchange contribution in terms of the one- and two-particle density matrices of the isolated monomers is given. This formula is used to derive the intramonomer correlation contribution to the first-order exchange nonadditivity with the density matrices of the isolated monomers computed at the second-order Møller–Plesset level. As an illustrative example of the theory the trimer Ar2–HF is considered. It is shown that the correlation contribution is far from negligible, not only in relation to the corresponding first-order uncorrelated exchange, but also in comparison to the other three-body terms. Moreover, it is fairly anisotropic, so that it cannot be neglected in accurate calculations of nonadditive effects. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate how different technology sourcing strategies throughout the new product development process influenced innovation speed, development costs, and competitive advantage. We studied 75 new product development projects from ten large, U.S.-based companies in several industries. Results indicated that: (1) more external sourcing during the early (i.e., idea generation) stage was related with lower competitive success; (2) more external sourcing during the later (i.e., technological development stage was related with slower innovation speed; and (3) development costs tended to rise with greater reliance on external sources of technology, but this result was not statistically significant.

    Notes: A portable data logger controlled by a Tattletale 7 microcontroller was used to record humpback whale choruses during the 1998 humpback whale winter season in Hawaii. The data logger sampled the sounds for four minutes every half hour using a digitizing rate of 2 kHz, and the data were stored on a hard disk. The results between January and April showed a peak in the sound pressure level between mid-February and mid-March. This peak of approximately 120 dB re 1 μPa coincided with the peak in the number of whales sighted by aerial survey on 7 March 1998. The choruses had spectral peaks at 315 Hz and 630 Hz. Some of the sounds at 630 Hz were second harmonics of the 315 Hz peak and others were not. The data also indicated a diurnal pattern in the sound pressure level, with levels at night significantly louder than the daytime levels. The sound levels began to increase during sunset and remained relatively high until sunrise, when they progressively decreased to a minimum. The nighttime peak occurred within an hour before and after midnight, and the daytime minimum occurred between 1100 and 1500. That more humpback whales appear to sing at night may reflect a switch to sexual advertisement as the primary male mating strategy at this time. It may also indicate that daylight and vision play key roles in the formation of competitive groups. It is suggested that the relative number of humpback whales in a given locale may be estimated by monitoring changes in sound pressure levels.

    Notes: The systemic crime model predicts that informal surveillance of space reduces street crime. Conversely, community decline theory posits that street crime reduces informal surveillance by increasing residents' perception of risk and fear. Moreover, functions of crime theory suggests that some types of crime may increase surveillance. Using data for 100 urban neighborhoods, the analysis examines these predictions and disentangles reciprocal effects. Baseline recursive equations indicate that informal surveillance is inversely associated with robbery/stranger assault, and that robbery/stranger assault is inversely associated with informal surveillance. In contrast, burglary rates are not affected by informal surveillance, but burglary has a positive effect on surveillance when robbery/stranger assault is controlled. Simultaneous equations indicate that robbery/stranger assault has a moderately strong inverse effect on informal surveillance, and that it is mediated by residents' perceptions of risk. When risk perception is controlled, informal surveillance has an inverse effect on robbery/stranger assault. The latter analysis also indicates that burglary increases surveillance, suggesting that some types of crime serve positive functions. The results, therefore, lend support to systemic, community decline, and functions of crime theory, and they suggest that the relationship between informal surveillance and crime is complex. Implications for community crime research are discussed.

    Notes: A new ansatz for local electron correlation is introduced, which truncates double substitutions subject to a triatomics in molecules (TRIM) criterion. TRIM includes all double substitutions in which one occupied-virtual substitution is atomic while the other substitution can be nonlocal (a cubic number, before cutoffs). With an additional approximation, the TRIM second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) model can be noniteratively solved; this is the model that is implemented. Results are shown for absolute energies of alkane and polyene chains, rotational barriers of substituted ethylenes and benzenes, and association energies of the water and neon dimers. Over 99.7% of the untruncated MP2 energy is recovered for the test cases, and the relative energies of small systems are in error by less than 0.1 kcal/mol. By contrast, a diatomics in molecules (DIM) truncation recovers about 95% of the full MP2 energy, and yields errors several times larger for relative energies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Oral microbial-plaque communities are biofilms composed of numerous genetically distinct types of bacteria that live in close juxtaposition on host surfaces. These bacteria communicate through physical interactions called coaggregation and coadhesion, as well as other physiological and metabolic interactions. Streptococci and actinomyces are the major initial colonizers of the tooth surface, and the interactions between them and their substrata help establish the early biofilm community. Fusobacteria play a central role as physical bridges that mediate coaggregation of cells and as physiological bridges that promote anaerobic microenvironments which protect coaggregating strict anaerobes in an aerobic atmosphere. New technologies for investigating bacterial populations with 16S rDNA probes have uncovered previously uncultured bacteria and have offered an approach to in situ examination of the spatial arrangement of the participant cells in oral-plaque biofilms. Flow cells with saliva-coated surfaces are particularly useful for studies of biofilm formation and observation. The predicted sequential nature of colonization of the tooth surface by members of different genera can be investigated by using these new technologies and imaging the cells in situ with confocal scanning laser microscopy. Members of at least seven genera now can be subjected to genetic studies owing to the discovery of gene-transfer systems in these genera. Identification of contact-inducible genes in streptococci offers an avenue to explore bacterial responses to their environment and leads the way toward understanding communication among inhabitants of a multispecies biofilm.
