Notes: We report on investigations of the crystallographic structure and the magnetic anisotropies of epitaxial iron films deposited onto periodically stepped Ag(001) surfaces using low energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, second harmonic generation (SHG), as well as the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) technique. The focus of the present study lies on the interrelation between the surface morphology of the buffer layers and the magnetic properties of the Fe films, epitaxially grown onto them. Especially the symmetry breaking at the atomic steps is found to create an uniaxial magnetic anisotropy measured by BLS and a very strong anisotropic signal in magnetic SHG. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) is thought to be a foraging generalist, preying on numerous species in diverse habitats of the subtropical Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. At the atoll of French Frigate Shoals, recent evidence of emaciation and low survival in monk seals prompted a search for their specific prey communities and foraging habitat.A video camera (National Geographic Television's CRITTERCAM) fitted to 24 adult male seals documented benthic and demersal foraging on the deep slopes (50-80 m) of the atoll and neighboring banks. The number of bottom searches for prey was compared by year, time of day, type of bottom, individual seal, and length of bottom time. Analysis of variance identified a significant interaction of seal and bottom type, explaining 65% of the total variance. Seals fed on communities of cryptic fauna (fish and large invertebrates) in transitional “ecotone” regions of low relief where consolidated substrate, rubble, and talus bordered areas of sand. Independent areal surveys of bottom types throughout the atoll and neighboring banks suggest that the type of bottom selected as foraging habitat represents a relatively small percentage of the total benthic area available.

Notes: Three patients from different centers with pacemaker or ICD leads endocardially implanted in the left ventricle are described. All leads, two ventricular pacing leads and one ICD lead, were inserted through a patent foramen ovale or an atrial septum defect. The diagnosis was made 9 months. 14 months, and 16 years, respectively, after implantation. All patients had right bundle branch block configuration during ventricular pacing. Chest X ray was suggestive of a left-sided positioned lead except in the ICD patient. Diagnosis was confirmed with echocardiography in all patients. One patient with a ventricular pacing lead presented with a transient ischcmic attack at 1-month postimplantation. During surgical repair of the atrial septum defect 14 months later, the lead was extracted and thrombus was attached to the lead despite therapy with aspirin. The other patients were asymptomatic without anticoagulation (9 months and 16 years after implant). No thrombus was present on the ICD lead at the time of the cardiac transplantation in one patient. We reviewed 27 patients with permanent leads described in the literature. Ten patients experienced thromboembolic complications, including three of ten patients on antiplatelet therapy. The lead was removed in six patients, anticoagulation with warfarin was effective for secondary prevention in the four remaining patients. In the asymptomatic patients, the lead was removed in five patients. In the remaining patients, 1 patient was on warfarin, 2 were on antiplatelet therapy, and in 3 patients the medication was unknown. After malposition was diagnosed, three additional patients were treated with warfarin. In conclusion, if timely removal of a malpositioned lead in the left ventricle is not preformed, lifelong anticoagulation with warfarin can be recommended as the first choice therapy and lead extraction reserved in case of failure or during concomitant surgery.

Notes: Abstract The sturgeon genus Scaphirhynchus consists of threerecognized species. Pallid and shovelnose sturgeon (S. albusand S. platorynchus, respectively) are sympatric in theMissouri and lower Mississippi Rivers of the central United States. TheAlabama sturgeon (S. suttkusi) is endemic to the nearby MobileRiver drainage and is isolated geographically from the other twospecies. Pallid sturgeon and the extremely rare Alabama sturgeon arelisted as endangered under the US Endangered Species Act (ESA).In contrast, shovelnose sturgeon are relatively common and are notlisted. Despite these taxonomies and morphological evidence, somebiologists have questioned the genetic and taxonomic distinctions of thethree species, thus raising doubts concerning the validity of protectingpallid and Alabama sturgeon under the ESA. To investigate thesequestions, we compared a 436 base-pair sequence of the mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) control region among the three species. We observed 16 mtDNAhaplotypes defined by 27 single base-pair substitutions (transitions)and one single base-pair insertion/deletion (indel) among 78individuals examined. The maximum sequence divergence among thosehaplotypes (2.06%) was less than values usually observed betweenfish species. However, Alabama sturgeon (n = 3) weredistinguished from the other two taxa (n = 75) by aunique base-pair substitution and haplotype, and pallid and shovelnosesturgeon at their northern range of natural sympatry (upper MissouriRiver) did not share any haplotypes. On the other hand, only frequencydifferences among shared haplotypes distinguished (P 〈 0.01)pallid and shovelnose sturgeon at their southern range of naturalsympatry (Atchafalaya River), and genetic distances between northern andsouthern localities for each species were nearly as large as thedistances between species. These latter results are consistent withseveral hypotheses, including reports (based on morphology) of putativenatural hybrids in the Atchafalaya River but not in the upper MissouriRiver. Overall, these mtDNA results indicate significant reproductiveisolation between pallid and shovelnose sturgeon in areas of naturalsympatry, and recent evolutionary divergence of Alabama sturgeon. ThesemtDNA results provide the first molecular genetic evidence fordistinguishing the three Scaphirhynchus species and, coupledwith morphological and biogeographic data, indicate that pallid andAlabama sturgeon should be evaluated as distinct species under theESA.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of time focusing for very slow neutrons is considered. This focusing may prove very useful in solving the problem of accumulating ultracold neutrons in a trap that are generated by a pulsed source. Diffraction at a phase grating moving across a beam or resonance neutron-spin flip is proposed to implement time-controlled changes in the neutron energy.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the set of transformations of the s and d boson operators that maintain the IBM-like form of the Hamiltonian comprises a discrete point symmetry group D 2′. The transformations manifest themselves as a parameter symmetry of the IBM-1 Hamiltonian. The transformations considered are also necessary for constructing the most general IBM-2 Hamiltonian. The properties of the potential energy surfaces arising in connection with these transformations are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of the formation of current sheets in 3D magnetic configurations with singular X-lines was studied experimentally. It is shown that a sheet can be formed in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic-field component directed along the X-line, in which case the longitudinal component can exceed the transverse component everywhere inside the plasma. Characteristic of the CS formation in 3D magnetic configurations with X-lines are an increase in the longitudinal magnetic-field component inside the sheet and a decrease in the plasma compression ratio as compared to 2D configurations with null-lines. If the longitudinal component exceeds a certain critical value, a sheet cannot be formed: instead of a sheet, there appear two sheaths separated by a cavity with a local minimum in the electron density.

Notes: Abstract. East Maui Volcano is the younger and larger of two volcanoes that form the island of Maui, Hawai‘i. Rejuvenated stage (Hāna volcanics) lava flows along the southwest rift zone form a veneer lying disconformably on top of the postshield Kula Volcanics (0.93–~0.36 Ma). Most of the 59 documented Hāna eruptions produced ‘a‘ā flows from large cinder cones. Fourteen new 14C ages and stratigraphic relationships suggest that the onset of rejuvenated volcanism on the southwest rift zone began at least 50 ka, showing that the quiescent period between the postshield and rejuvenated stage on East Maui was ~300,000 years long, the shortest yet documented on any Hawaiian volcano. Eruption frequency on the southwest rift zone steadily increased during the past ~4800 years; there have been at least six eruptions within the past ~960 years. Hāna volcanic activity on the southwest rift zone during the past ~4800 years may have occurred in three episodes, each lasting as long as 1000 years separated by quiescent periods ~500–800 years long. Geochemical data, ages, and geologic relations provide evidence for five multi-flow sequences that were erupted during single events, helping to define the eruptive character or style of rejuvenation stage volcanic activity on the southwest rift zone. Areas covered by the products of individual eruptions vary from 0.14 to ~40 km2, and volumes from 0.0003 to 0.40 km3. Geochemical evidence shows that the Hāna lavas are derived from a small range of parental melts that undergo varying degrees of fractional crystallization. MELTS crystallization simulations suggest that Hāna magmatic evolution occurs at a pressure of ~3 kbar (~10–11 km depth), just above the interface between the volcanic edifice and the oceanic plate. The Hāna volcanics are unique among Hawaiian rejuvenation suites in having been erupted along rift zones with a relatively high eruption frequency from a quasi-steady-state, deep crustal magma reservoir.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the recruitment and baseline characteristics of men, women, and couples who enrolled in the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Efficacy Study at the study site in Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing (HIV VCT) to reduce sexual risk behavior. Between June 1995 and March 1996, 500 individual men, 500 individual women, and 515 couple members were recruited for a total sample of 1,515 participants. Participants were young (average age 29 years) and of low income. High levels of risk behavior and self-reported STD symptoms and a high rate of HIV seropositivity among those tested at baseline (15% of men and 27% of women) indicate that an at-risk sample was recruited. Women and participants reporting symptoms of a sexually transmitted infected were significantly more likely to be infected with HIV. Findings suggest that HIV VCT services combined with STD diagnosis and treatment and economic development services could motivate more at-risk individuals and couples to receive counseling and testing.
