    Notes: Mean subgroup (gender, ethnic/cultural, and age) differences are summarized across studies for several predictor domains – cognitive ability, personality and physical ability – at both broadly and more narrowly defined construct levels, with some surprising results. Research clearly indicates that the setting, the sample, the construct and the level of construct specificity can all, either individually or in combination, moderate the magnitude of differences between groups. Employers using tests in employment settings need to assess accurately the requirements of work. When the exact nature of the work is specified, the appropriate predictors may or may not have adverse impact against some groups. The possible causes and remedies for adverse impact (measurement method, culture, test coaching, test-taker perceptions, stereotype threat and criterion conceptualization) are also summarized. Each of these factors can contribute to subgroup differences, and some appear to contribute significantly to subgroup differences on cognitive ability tests, where Black–White mean differences are most pronounced. Statistical methods for detecting differential prediction, test fairness and construct equivalence are described and evaluated, as are statistical/mathematical strategies for reducing adverse impact (test-score banding and predictor/criterion weighting strategies).

    Notes: We specify 2 independent theoretical frameworks in which it is a practical necessity to engage in compliance seeking incrementally and interactively in order to establish the social meanings of solicitation and of response. One theoretical framework ties social meaning to the interactional positioning of solicitation and response; the second framework ties social meaning to the way solicitation and response each are framed relative to shared cultural or other premises about persuadables and about the rights and obligations of each party. Accordingly, the chief communication mechanism that promotes compliance must be a give-and-take process in which each party can influence, and accommodate, the other's understanding of what solicitation and response mean. We analyze 2 naturally occurring compliance-seeking episodes and find support for our initial theorizing and discuss consequences for theory.

    Notes: The recently completed upgrade of the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF III) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has improved the accuracy of radiometric measurements over a broad spectral range from the infrared to the soft x ray. The beamline 4 at SURF III is a cryogenic-radiometer based radiometric facility for the ultraviolet (UV) spectral range. The upgrade of SURF III has allowed us to use beamline 4 to improve the detector spectral power responsivity scales in the wavelength range from 125 to 320 nm. The achieved combined relative standard uncertainty is better than 0.5% over most of this spectral range. This is a significant improvement over the more than 6% relative standard uncertainty in this spectral range of the current scales maintained at the Spectral Comparator Facility (SCF) in the Optical Technology Division and the Far UV Calibration Facility in the Electron and Optical Physics Division. The new UV scale of beamline 4 was subsequently intercompared and transferred to the SCF and to the Far UV Calibration Facility to improve their UV scales and ensure consistency within NIST. The new scale established at beamline 4 improves NIST's calibration capabilities for environmental monitoring, astrophysics, and the UV industry. The new scale also includes wavelengths such as 193 and 157 nm excimer laser wavelengths, which are of particular interest to the semiconductor photolithography industry.

    Notes: We describe a home-built apertureless near-field scanning optical microscope and present preliminary results of its operation. Raman scattering from samples of polydiacetylene para-toluene sulphonate, and two-photon-induced fluorescence from crystallites of coumarin I dye are strongly enhanced in the presence of a sharp gold-coated atomic force microscope tip. We verify the dependence of the scattered intensity on the polarization of the incident beam relative to the tip axis. Finally, we show near-field fluorescence images taken in the presence of a strong far-field background whose spatial resolution is limited by the size of the tip. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An innovative approach to increase the throughput of mass spectrometric analyses using a multiple-ion-beam mass spectrometer is described. Two sample spots were applied onto a laser desorption/ionization target and each spot was simultaneously irradiated by a beam of quadrupled Nd:YLF laser radiation (261.75 nm) to produce ions by laser-desorption ionization. Acceleration of the ions in an electric field created parallel ion beams that were focused by two parallel einzel lens systems. After a flight path of 2.34 m, the ions were detected with a microchannel plate-phosphor screen assembly coupled with a charge coupled device camera that showed two resolved ion beams. Time-of-flight mass spectra were also obtained with this detector. Experiments were performed using both metal atom cations (Ti+ and Cr+) produced by laser desorption/ionization and the molecular ions of two different proteins (myoglobin and lysozyme), created by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization using an excess of nicotinic acid as matrix. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photoelectron–photofragment coincidence spectroscopy was used to study dissociative photodetachment of the doubly hydrated clusters of oxide and hydroxide, M−(H2O)2→M+2H2O+e− (M=O, OH). These experiments yield information on the energetics of the parent anion and the dissociation dynamics of the photodetached neutral species. Photoelectron spectra and photoelectron–photofragment coincidence spectra are presented and compared to data for O−(H2O) and OH−(H2O). Unlike the singly hydrated species, no evidence of vibrationally resolved product translational energy distributions is observed. The second hydration energy of O− with both H2O and D2O was also measured to be 0.80±0.08 and 0.81±0.08 eV, respectively. The three-body dissociation dynamics of the neutral clusters produced by photodetachment were studied by measuring the velocities and recoil angles of all the particles in coincidence. The observed partitioning of momentum is consistent with a two-step mechanism or dissociation from a wide range of starting geometries. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dissociative photodetachment (DPD) of HCO2− and DCO2− was studied at 258 nm. State-resolved translational energy distributions were observed correlated to bending excitation in the CO2 product for the channel producing H/D+CO2, indicating very low rotational excitation in the products consistent with predissociation of a C2ν HCO2 molecule. No evidence was found for dissociation into OH+CO. All three low-lying electronic states (2A1, 2B2, and 2A2) were found to dissociate, but resolved progressions were only observed from photodetachment to the 2A1 and 2B2 states. Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectra for DCO2− show resolved vertical bands and indicate that multiple CO2 vibrational states are accessible from each vibrational level in the predissociating DCO2 molecule. The resolved structure is assigned to vibrational predissociation sequence bands, observable in this DPD process owing to the dissociation dynamics and the near degeneracy of the vibrational levels in the 2A1 and 2B2 states of HCO2 and the bending mode of the CO2 products. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photoelectron-photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectroscopy has been used to study the dissociative photodetachment of H2O2− and D2O2−. The observed partitioning of photoelectron and photofragment translational energies provides information on the dynamics in the transition state region of the reaction between two hydroxyl radicals: OH+OH→O(3P)+H2O. The data reveal vibrationally resolved product translational energy distributions for both the entrance channel OH+OH and the exit channel O(3P)+H2O upon photodetachment. The total translational energy distribution shows a convoluted vibrational progression consistent with antisymmetric stretch excitation of H2O in the exit channel and OH stretch in the entrance channel. The photoelectron spectra are compared to two-dimensional time-dependent wave packet dynamics simulations based on an anharmonic potential in the anion and a model collinear potential energy surface for the neutral complex. The PPC spectra also yield the dissociation energies D0(H2O2−→H2O+O−)=1.15±0.08 eV and D0(D2O2−→D2O+O−)=1.05±0.08 eV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The glutamate analog (±) threo-3-methylglutamate (T3MG) has recently been reported to inhibit the EAAT2 but not EAAT1 subtype of high-affinity, Na+-dependent excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT). We have examined the effects of T3MG on glutamate-elicited currents mediated by EAATs 1–4 expressed in Xenopus oocytes and on the transport of radiolabeled substrate in mammalian cell lines expressing EAATs 1–3. T3MG was found to be an inhibitor of EAAT2 and EAAT4 but a weak inhibitor of EAAT1 and EAAT3. T3MG competitively inhibited uptake of d-[3H]-aspartate into both cortical and cerebellar synaptosomes with a similar potency, consistent with its inhibitory activity on the cloned EAAT2 and EAAT4 subtypes. In addition, T3MG produced substrate-like currents in oocytes expressing EAAT4 but not EAAT2. However, T3MG was unable to elicit heteroexchange of preloaded d-[3H]-aspartate in cerebellar synaptosomes, inconsistent with the behavior of a substrate inhibitor. Finally, T3MG acts as a poor ionotropic glutamate receptor agonist in cultured hippocampal neurons: concentrations greater than 100 µm T3MG were required to elicit significant NMDA receptor-mediated currents. Thus, T3MG represents a pharmacological tool for the study of not only the predominant EAAT2 subtype but also the EAAT4 subtype highly expressed in cerebellum.

    Notes: Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 is predominantly expressed in postmitotic neurons and plays a role in neurite elongation during development. It has also been postulated to play a role in apoptosis in a variety of cells, including neurons, but little is known about the generality and functional significance of cdk5 expression in neuronal apoptosis in living brain. We have therefore examined its expression and that of its known activators, p35, p39 and p67, in models of induced apoptosis in neurons of the substantia nigra. We find that cdk5 is expressed in apoptotic profiles following intrastriatal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine and axotomy. It is expressed exclusively in profiles which are in late morphologic stages of apoptosis. In these late stages, derivation of the profiles from neurons, and localization of expression to the nucleus, can be demonstrated by co-labeling with a neuron-specific nuclear marker, NeuN. In another model of induced apoptotic death in nigra, produced by developmental striatal lesion, kinase activity increases in parallel with cell death. While mRNAs for all three cdk5 activators are expressed in nigra during development, only p35 protein is expressed in apoptotic profiles. We conclude that cdk5/p35 expression is a general feature of apoptotic neuron death in substantia nigra neurons in vivo.
