    Notes: A variety of extracellular serine proteases are expressed in the central nervous system or might permeate the blood–brain barrier under pathological conditions. However, their intracerebral targets and physiological functions are largely unknown. Here, we show that four distinct subtypes of protease-activated receptors (PARs) are abundantly expressed in the adult rat brain and in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. PAR-1 expression was significant in the hippocampus, cortex and amygdala. Highest densities of PAR-2 and PAR-3 were observed in hippocampus, cortex, amygdala, thalamus, hypothalamus and striatum. Apart from the striatum, a similar localization was found for PAR-4. Within the hippocampal formation, each PAR subtype was predominantly localized in the pyramidal cell layers. Additionally, we identified PAR-2 in mossy fibers between dentate gyrus and CA3, PAR-3 in the subiculum and PAR-4 in CA3 and in mossy fibres as well as in the stratum lacunosum moleculare. After exposing hippocampal slice cultures to a severe experimental ischemia (oxygen–glucose deprivation), the expression of PARs 1–3 was up-regulated with subtype-specific kinetics. The localization of PARs in brain regions particularly vulnerable to ischemic insults as well as distinct alterations in the expression pattern after experimental ischemia support the notion of an important role of extracellular serine proteases and PARs in cerebral ischemia.

    Notes: Many ceramic injection molding vehicles include semicrystalline polymers which characteristically adopt a spherulitic growth morphology. Usually the spherulites are rendered invisible by the opacity of the ceramic powder but in this study they are clearly visible. Polyoxymethylene (POM), has been used as the vehicle. The growth of the spherulites is shown to be dependent on cooling rate and hence on position in the molding. Furthermore, migration of low molecular weight additives by syneresis is shown to occur and to influence the crack path in the as-molded state. An unusual composite fractograph is shown in which fracture faces made after molding, after binder removal, and after sintering are contiguous. Only after molding does the crack path follow the spherulite boundaries; behavior that is also widely reported for unfilled POM.

    Notes: Abstract: The charge-ordered perovskite Pr0.65Ca0.28Sr0.07MnO3 was investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, dielectric and optical spectroscopy and electron-spin resonance techniques. Under moderate magnetic fields, the charge order melts yielding colossal magnetoresistance effects with changes of the resistivity over eleven orders of magnitude. The optical conductivity is studied from audio frequencies far into the visible spectral regime. Below the phonon modes hopping conductivity is detected. Beyond the phonon modes the optical conductivity is explained by polaronic excitations out of a bound state. ESR techniques yield detailed informations on the (H,T ) phase diagram and reveal a broadening of the linewidth which can be modeled in terms of activated polaron hopping.

    Notes: Abstract: EPR and 7Li NMR measurements were performed in the distorted inverse spinel V(LiCu)O4 down to 1.5 K. Anisotropy effects on magnetic resonance spectra due to the Jahn-Teller distortion of the oxygen octahedra surrounding the copper ions are discussed. The estimation of the spin-spin interactions deduced from the EPR-relaxation rate Δ H reveals a situation comparable to the prototypical one-dimensional S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet CuGeO3. Approaching three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order ( T N ≈ 2 K) from above, both magnetic relaxation rates, Δ H EPR and 7 (1/ T 1 ), respectively, exhibit nearly the same critical divergence reminding to the onset of three-dimensional order in two-dimensional layered systems.
