Notes: Zn1−xMnxTe and Zn1−xMgxTe ternary wide-gap semiconductor alloys were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs substrates over a wide range of compositions (0≤x≤0.75 and 0≤x≤0.67, respectively). Values of the band gap were measured by photoluminescence at 12 K, and by optical reflectivity at room temperature. The wavelength dependence of the indices of refraction n of these ternary systems was also measured for these alloys at wavelengths below their respective energy gaps. The measurements were performed using a combination of the prism coupler method and reflectivity. Compilation of these results allows us to establish a set of empirical parameters for the two alloy families, that can be used to calculate the index of refraction for an arbitrary alloy composition and arbitrary wavelength. It is interesting that the values of n show a surprisingly linear dependence on the corresponding energy gaps for both these alloy systems. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. The effects of oestrogen on thrombogenesis and the cerebral microcirculation of the female rat were studied during the oestrous cycle and after ovariectomy.2. Serum levels of oestradiol (E2) and plasma concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) metabolites were significantly greater at pro-oestrus than at dioestrus. Blood vessel diameter, mean red cell velocity, wall shear rate and blood flow at pro-oestrus were significantly higher than at dioestrus. Thrombotic tendency, assessed using a He–Ne laser-induced thrombosis model, was significantly decreased at pro-oestrus compared with dioestrus.3. The long-term deprivation of oestrogen by ovariectomy significantly depressed serum levels of E2 and plasma concentrations of NO metabolites. Thrombotic tendency was significantly increased 4 weeks after ovariectomy. Vessel diameter, mean red cell velocity, wall shear rate and blood flow in pial arterioles were significantly reduced after ovariectomy.4. Exogenous administration of oestrogen (17β-oestradiol) after surgery reversed the increased thrombotic tendency mediated by ovariectomy.5. These results strongly indicate that oestrogen mediates beneficial effects on the cerebral microcirculation and moderates cerebral thrombotic mechanisms in the female rat.

Notes: Abstract: Excited states of the 119Xe nucleus have been studied by using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy with the 107Ag ( 16O, p3n) 119Xe fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 85 MeV. The level scheme of 119Xe has been derived from γ-γ coincidence and γ-γ angular correlation analyses. We have, for the first time, established the second negative-parity favored and unfavored states built on the 11/2- state, namely the yrare rotational bands in 119Xe. In contrast to the behavior of the yrast bands where the favored states are lying lower in energy, the yrare favored states were observed to lie above the unfavored band. Such a signature inversion in 119Xe is changed to be normal at I = 12?.
