    Notes: Summary A role for protein kinase C (PKC)-α has been implicated in the growth of mouse hair. Topical application of PKC activators, hair plucking, allergic contact dermatitis and skin irritation can all enhance growth of mouse hair, and a significant increase in PKC-α level in whole mouse skin in mature anagen has been demonstrated in these processes. Overexpression of PKC-α in anagen hair follicles has also been reported in natural growth of mouse hair. It is known that overexpression of PKC-α is associated with the acceleration of cell growth. Therefore, we postulated that overexpression of PKC-α in mature anagen may relate to enhancement of hair growth. The distribution of PKC-α in hair follicles during induced growth of mouse hair has not previously been studied. In this study, hair growth in C57BL/6 mice was induced by plucking the telogen hairs on one side of the back. The undepilated contralateral side served as a control. Expression of PKC-α in hair follicles during the hair growth cycle induced was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using cryosections and a specific polyclonal anti-PKC-α immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody. No PKC-α was detected in telogen hair follicles or in the hair follicles at 1 day post-depilation, when the induced hair cycle was in early anagen. At 4 days after plucking, when the induced hair cycle was in mid-anagen, intense staining for PKC-α was found in hair papillae. At 10 and 17 days after depilation, when the induced hair cycle was in mature anagen and early catagen, respectively, all outer root sheath (ORS) cells and outer connective sheaths of hair follicles were stained positive. Because no PKC-α was detected in telogen hair follicles in this study, down-regulation of PKC-α in early anagen could not be observed. However, consistent with our previous findings, overexpression of PKC-α was found in mid-anagen and mature anagen. As overexpression of PKC-α has been shown to be associated with acceleration of cell growth, our results support the notion that PKC-α may play an important role in growth of hair follicle cells in induced growth of hair. As PKC levels are known to increase in hyperglycaemia, overexpressed PKC-α in mature anagen hair follicles may be related to the putative function of the ORS in mobilizing glycogen stores for anagen growth.

    Notes: Involution of the thymus and alterations in the development of thymocytes are the most prominent features of age-related immune senescence. We have carried out a comparative analysis of thymocyte and stroma in rapid thymic involution DBA/2 (D2) strain of mice compared with slow involution C57BL/6 (B6) strain of mice. Analysis of mice at 15 months of age suggested an age-related decrease in the thymocyte cell count, a block in the development of T cells and cortical involution in D2 mice compared with 3-month-old mice. TUNEL (terminal-deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP–digoxigenin nick end labelling) staining and fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis showed that there was a significant increase in apoptotic cells in the cortex region of thymus in 15-month-old D2 mice compared with the same aged B6 mice. The thymocyte proliferation rate, as assessed by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) staining and [3H]-thymidine incorporation assay, was lower in 3-month-old D2 mice compared with the same age B6 mice. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the arrangement of MTS (mouse thymus stromal)-10+ epithelial cells and MTS-16+ connective tissue staining pattern had become disorganized in 15-month-old D2 mice but remained intact in B6 mice of the same age. These results suggest that, in D2 mice, both the thymocytes and stromal cells exhibit age-related defects, and that the genetic background of mice plays an important role in determining age-related alterations in thymic involution.

    Notes: A disease of Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the giant freshwater prawn, farmed in China was recently recorded in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces. The clinical sign of the disease, which develops in post-larvae (PL), is a whitish appearance of the muscles, particularly noticeable in the abdomen. Mortalities may reach 100% in some hatcheries. Investigations by transmission electron microscopy after negative staining of diseased PL homogenates showed the presence of two types of viral particles: one, unenveloped, icosahedral in shape, 26–27 nm in diameter, the second, much smaller, about 14–16 nm in diameter, designated extra small virus particle (XSV). The large virus has a genome with two pieces of ssRNA (RNA-1 and RNA-2), of 3 and 1.2 kb, respectively. Hybridization tests confirmed that this large virus is closely related to M. rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) which was isolated from diseased prawns in a hatchery in the French West Indies. Its very small size and hypothesized biochemical and biological characteristics suggest XSV is a new type of crustacean virus. As XSV has always been found associated with the larger virus (nodavirus) and is located in muscle and connective cells of diseased animals, it could be an autonomous virus, a helper-type virus or a satellite-like virus.

    Notes: Abstract. The possibility that higher dimensional field theories are broken spontaneously, through the usual Nambu-Goldstone mechanism, to 4-dimension is explored. As a consequence, vector Goldstone bosons can arise in this breaking of Lorentzian symmetry from higher dimension to 4-dimension. This can provide a simple mechanism for reduction to 4-dimension in theories with extra dimensions.
