    Notes: The analysis of stresses and deformations in concrete structures subjected to temperature gradients is described. As a result of the spatial variation of temperature, the creep compliance is a function of position. Previous work has shown that the constitutive equations for concrete creep can be expressed in a form which is invariable although ageing is included in the analysis. Thus viscoelastic methods can be used and correspondence principles can be developed; emphasis is placed in the present work on those which are based on the Laplace transform. A particular form is described, in which replacement of the elastic modulus by a function of the transformed creep compliance gives transformed values of stress; these values are easily obtained numerically by the finite element method using elastic analyses. The transformed values of stress are then expressed as approximate functions of the transformed creep compliance; inversion of the ensuing functions gives the stress as an approximate function of time. Two applications are given; the first considers a simple axially loaded column with reinforcement and the second deals with a thick cylinder subjected to a temperature gradient.

    Notes: The stiffness-derivative method of Parks1 for calculating the linear elastic crack tip stress intensity factor for any symmetric crack configuration and a particular loading is extended to calculate the weight function vector field2,3 which serves as a Green's function for the stress intensity factor. The method, which combines the observations of Rice3 on the weight function and of Zienkiewicz4 on the differential stiffness method, permits very efficient determination of the weight function, requiring only one additional back-substitution on the already-factored stiffness matrix. Thus, the stress intensity factor for arbitrary loading of this configuration can subsequently be determined by quadrature alone. The promising extension of the method to three-dimensional configurations is outlined.While this manuscript was under review, the authors became aware of the recent work of Vanderglas,21 in which the same approach as ours is used to extend the stiffness derivative method. The present work was then voluntarily revised in order to address further certain aspects of the topic of shape function perturbation, which Vanderglas noted.

    Notes: For a wide calss of finite element matrices integrated numerically rather than exactly, a definable number of sampling points is found to be sufficient for keeping their theoretical properties unchanged. A systematic criterion limiting the number of possible point configurations for numerical quadrature formulas on triangles is established. Some new high order formulas are presented. Tables containing optional formulas with respect to minimum number of sampling points and required degrees of accuracy are given. They are arranged so as to assist with selection of suitable quadrature formulas for finite element computer programming.

    Notes: In the stressed-skin analysis of metal structures it is vital to have a simple yet accurate treatment of the shear deformation of profiled metal sheeting. A suitable theory is developed in this paper for the two important cases of sheeting fastened to the supporting structure through every and alternate troughs of the corrugations.     Notes: The first order partial differential equations of charge flow are commonly differenced in the space co-ordinate, with a view to analogue computation of the resulting ordinary differential equations in time. Defects of orthodox difference formulae are identified. In particular: (a) reversed waves and stability problems arise from central differences and (b) first order errors and a ‘pseudo-viscous’ dispersion effect with accompanying false attenuation results from upwind differences. These difficulties are particularly serious in view of the coarse differencing required for practical analogue computation. A much superior formula is presented which is entirely free of attenuation and is easily implemented. Various other desirable features are reported.

    Notes: A long established approximation, normally invoked in the development of classical rolling theory, is that the work roll-strip interface assumes a circular profile.     Notes: A study is presented of the symmetrical steady-state motion of a rigid shaft supported by two ‘short’ (Ocvirk) journal bearings. The equations of motion for a balanced or unbalanced shaft were solved using numerical ‘initial value problem’ techniques. Frequency analysis, which was used to determine the components of the steady-state motion, confirmed that, for most conditions, the motion was asymptotically periodic comprising a small number of components - principally at synchronous and half synchronous frequency. However, a region of the operating space was found, in which the motion was complex and did not settle to a limit cycle. An estimate of the extent of this region is given and the suspected cause investigated.
