Notes: Summary Antiangiotensin II plasma induced transitory hypotension in rats when 0.2 ml was injected intravenously in normal males (either awake or anaesthetized), into binephrectomized females or into some males which had been nephrectomized 18–22 or 42–53 hours previously. Antiangiotensin II did not affect the blood pressure of male rats when given between 24 and 26 hours after nephrectomy. Antiangiotensin resulted in a 10–200 fold increase in the dose of angiotensin required to produce a measurable change in blood pressure, and also significantly reduced reactivity to l-noradrenaline. A remaining plasma renin activity was constantly found in binephrectomized females and in most of binephrectomized males. Plasma renin activity was significantly higher in the former than in the latter. It is concluded that angiotensin plays a role in the maintanance of blood pressure, in normal rats, in binephrectomized females and in some binephrectomized males.

Notes: 1,2,4,5-Tetracyanobenzene reacts under mild conditions with anionic reagents not to polymer but to low molecular weight, high substituted phthalocyanines: 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacyanophthalocyanine (3a) and tetrakis(1-imino-3-propoxyisoindolo)porphyrazine (3b). 3a is saponified to the octacarboxyphthalocyanine 3c and converted with hydrazine to tetrakis(1,4-diaminophthalazino)porphyrazine (3d). Low molecular metal chelates are synthesized starting from 3a and 3c. IR- and UV/VIS-spectra are discussed.

Notes: The gas phase reaction of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (3) with metal sheets like Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, and Ti exhibits the in situ formation of polymeric phthalocyanine coatings 1. The electrochemical behaviour of layers of 1 is investigated by means of cyclic voltametric measurements. Determination of layer-thickness and electrical resistance is also performed.

Notes: Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks based on polystyrene and polystyrene-polyisoprene three-block copolymers (SIS) were prepared by anionic polymerization. Factors affecting synthesis, such as composition, molecular weight of either the unattached SIS or the polystyrene between crosslinks, elastomer content, have been varied. Their effect on network formation was examined by extraction experiments and swelling measurements. Their morphology was investigated by means of electron microscopy.

Notes: Linear and branched siloxanes were prepared by partial hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride and by esterification of the products of hydrolysation with methyl and ethyl nitrite. 29Si NMR spectra made it possible to distinguish between the isomers of each oligomer up to the heptamer. Linear relationships between the 29Si chemical shifts of the ethyl and the methyl esters on one hand and between the ethyl esters and the poly(silicic acid)s on the other hand were observed. However, due to the different effect of neighboring building units, there are only poor relationships between the 29Si data of the esters and the chloro derivatives.

Notes: The behaviour of part-through cracks, modelled by semi-elliptical surface cracks, under variable normal stresses (linearized) is investigated. The stable crack contour, given as crack aspect ratio, is determined for an infinite body as a circle; in a finite body semi-ellipses are “quasi”- stable. The effects of crack growth law types, crack location, geometry and stress redistribution together with plasticity effects are discussed. The final relative crack lengths for wall penetration are determined. The data are discussed with respect to the conditions for leak-before-break, sudden rupture and no-leak-before-break/no-sudden-rupture.

Notes: Calf thymus and salmon sperm deoxyribouncleie acid were degraded by high-shear stirring to molecular weights M in the range of 1.3-3.2 × 106 and purified by chromatography on methylated bovine serum albumin. Dynamic viscoelastic properties of the fragmented products, in aqueous glycerol solutions in the concentration range of c = 0.003-0.01 g./ml., were investigated with the apparatus of Birnboim and Ferry. At values of the product cM higher than 4 × 103, the frequency dependence of the components of the complex shear modulus, G′ and G″, displayed a plateau region in which G′ 〉 G″ - ων1ηS, similar to that observed in concentrated solutions of coiling polymers where it is attributed to an entanglement network (ω is radian frequency, ν1 volume fraction of solvent, and η8, solvent viscosity). The width of this plateau region on the logarithmic frequency scale is given by Δ = 3.8 (log cM - 3.56). At lower values of cM, the frequency dependence is intermediate between those predicted by the theory of Zimm for flexible coiled macromolecules and by the theory of Kirkwood and Auer for rods. Fitting to the Zimm theory gives highly discrepant values for molecular weights, while fitting the low-frequency end of the dispersion to the Kirkwood-Auer theory gives reasonable agreement for both molecular weight and rotary diffusion coefficient. It is concluded that the helical fragments appear as nearly rigid rods in their behavior at very low frequencies, but at higher frequencies reveal substantial bending flexibility.

Notes: ABA poly(styrene-b-isoprene) block copolymers with various molecular weights and composition were used as heat activated films in simple overlap glass joints. The influence of bonding temperature on their shear strength at break was investigated. On increase of temperature, the joint resistance for most of the copolymers passed through a maximum, which temperature was dependent on the molecular characteristics of the copolymers. The decrease in melt viscosity or chemical degradation could not explain the data. A morphological interpretation which fits well the present and previous observations is proposed and verified for one copolymer used in this work.
