    Notizen: In light of recent statistics suggesting that geriatric depression is highly prevalent, complicates and promotes medical illness, and strongly impacts quality of life, this paper explores numerous aspects of depression in late life, including proper detection and treatment barriers, risk reduction, and somatic intervention. Additionally, the relationship between depression and morbidity is highlighted given that the prevalence of depressive symptoms increases in older adults with medical disorders and greatly impacts outcome. Finally, empirically supported somatic treatments and their side effects are discussed with emphasis on the efficacy and effectiveness of pharmacotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), exercise, and phototherapy (bright light therapy).

    Notizen: Older adults are the fastest growing subpopulation in the United States, and it is likely that the demand for well-trained clinical geropsychologists will expand. This trend has important implications for research and graduate training. One promising area of research concerns the most effective ways of dealing with long-term illness in partners of older adults. With regard to training, we point out that the connection between neuropsychology and geropsychology needs further emphasis. Increasing the number of geropsychology programs is clearly desirable, and further funding to support and increase the number of such programs should be of high priority. Two recent developments are also highlighted. The first involves a federal court case that addresses the relationship between physical and mental illness, an issue particularly important to mental health parity concerning insurance reimbursements. The second issue concerns prescription privileges for psychologists in view of the recently passed law in New Mexico permitting psychologists to prescribe medicine. This article discusses the implications of these developments.

Universities use great expenses to recruit students, but are not retaining them as part of the community once they have graduated. The loss of alumni from the community is a great disadvantage to the institution and actively discourages collaborative learning.

Published for a number of years by Jossey-Bass, On the Horizon was acquired by a small, selective, house in the UK, Camford. Today we are pleased to announce that OTH will be published by Emerald, http://emeraldinsight.com, a major international publisher of over 130 professional journals. Beginning with Volume 10, in January 2002, OTH becomes a quarterly, doubled in size with expanded features, longer, more in-depth articles, and a global focus, as it adds regional editors to its board.

    Notizen: Purpose - This paper aims to alert readers to issues that may be overlooked in assessing fundamental changes in the post-secondary arena. Design/methodology/approach - Posits that the internet changes the nature of the university as fundamentally as one saw when the Bible was published on the movable type press. Findings - Open access courses and journals put knowledge into the Socratic Agora, changing the roles of faculty as both educators and researchers. Since knowledge is available with the click of a mouse, the linear Kindergarten to Bachelor's curriculum has been deconstructed and integrated with work and play since age is not a barrier to access. Also, few may opt for a hand-crafted, packaged, on-campus experience. As the current faculty, cyber immigrants, retires, the emerging cyber natives will form self-organizing communities of interest/practice and the function of the university must be reinvented. Originality/value - The paper is of value to administrators, policy analysts, researchers in the arena of education, funding agencies, foundations and politicians involved with educational change.
