    Notes: Abstract Asthma is a chronic disorder of the airways that is characterized by reversible airflow obstruction and airway inflammation, persistent airway hyperreactivity, and airway remodeling. The etiology of asthma is complex and multifactorial. Recent advances have demonstrated the importance of genetics in the development of asthma, particularly atopic asthma. Environmental stimuli, particularly early childhood infections, have also been associated with the development of asthma. Most current data seem to suggest that these factors drive the development of a Th-2 lymphocyte-predominant immune response, which has been associated with atopy and IgE-mediated inflammation. The concept of reversible airflow obstruction has also recently been challenged. It is now clear that chronic airway changes occur, which may contribute to progressive airflow obstruction. We discuss the important influence of genetic and environmental factors on the emergence of the asthmatic phenotype. The significance of Th-1 and Th-2 lymphocyte-mediated immunity are discussed, and the inflammatory processes leading to chronic airway inflammation are detailed.

    Notes: Marketing management presents challenging ground for the integrated use of intelligent agents. The design of a strategic marketing plan presents a natural division of four distinct yet independent decision problems. Concurrent execution of these four functions can yield a significant decrease in time-to-market for new products, and turnaround time for modified products. Electronic information is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it results in information overload, taxing the decision- making process. On the other hand, the electronic nature of these vast information flows makes them accessible to intelligent agents who can improve the decision-making process. This paper presents the problem of information overload and decision-making complexity in marketing management. In it, we present a blackboard-based agent architecture that allows individual agents to proceed toward their given goals yet react opportunistically to developments reported by other marketing agents. We present the blackboard model of problem solving, and discuss why it is well suited to support multiple marketing agents. CMA, a multi-agent model for concurrent marketing analysis, is discussed and the agent architecture required for creating a cooperating society of marketing agents is presented.

    Notes: Image theory has been used, in numerous studies, as a basis for understanding and describing the decision-making activity of managers in both cooperative and competitive environments. The fundamental division of duties prescribed by image theory - namely adoption decisions and progress decision - maps very well to the adaptability requirements of intelligent agents. The issues of adaptive planning and execution monitoring in agents can be well served by applying the empirical lessons learned from the application of image theory across groups of decision makers. This paper explores the concepts of adoption and progress decisions in the context of image theory and provides a basis for creating image-theoretic agents. This paper sets the foundation for an interdisciplinary bridge between Beach and Mitchell's Image Theory for human decision making, and the construction of intelligent agents. We begin by presenting image theory and describing its use among human decision makers. We then show how the mechanisms of image theory can be implemented in an agent-based architecture to implement both execution monitoring and adaptive planning. This is done through the image-theoretic constructs of progress decisions and adoption decisions. We conclude by presenting logic-programming implementation of the Imaginal Agent Architecture that supports the adaptive planning and execution monitoring of agents through the use of meta-level constructs for adoption and progress decisions.

    Notes: Abstract This study reports an investigation of the behavioral profiles and psychosocial adjustment of subgroups of victims and aggressors in elementary school peer groups. Peer nomination scores for aggression and victimization were used to classify 354 inner-city children (mean age of 10.3 years) into one of four subgroups: aggressive victims, nonaggressive victims, nonvictimized aggressors, and normative contrasts. Subgroup comparisons were then conducted using multi-informant assessment of social behavior, social acceptance-rejection, behavioral regulation, academic functioning, and emotional distress. Children in each of the victim-aggressor subgroups were characterized by a degree of social and behavioral maladjustment. However, impairments in behavioral and emotional regulation were most evident for the aggressive victim subgroup. Aggressive victims were also characterized by academic failure, peer rejection, and emotional distress. The results of this investigation highlight the distinctive nature of the aggressive victim subgroup.
