    Notes: An experimental study of microstructure and mechanical properties in the Al2O3particulate reinforced 6061 Aluminum composites has been used to determine the effect ofextrusion and particle volume fraction (20, 26, 30, 40, 50, 60%Vf) in deformed metal matrixcomposites. The microstructure of Al2O3 /6061Al composite before and after hot extrusion isinvestigated by TEM and SEM. Results show that dislocation and subgrain generated after hotextrusion as well as the particle distribution of composite become more uniform with extrusion ratioof 10:1. The ultimate strength, yield strength and elongation of the composite also increase after hotextrusion. Dispersion strengthening and subgrain boundary strengthening is discussed and also theeffect of precipitate introduced by heat treatment both after casting and after extrusion. The yieldstress (0.2% offset) of the composites has been calculated and predicted using a standard dislocationhardening model. Whilst the correlation between this and the measured value of yield stressobtained in previous experimental test is reasonable

    Notes: Microstructural observations are presented for different metals deformed from low tohigh strain by both traditional and new metal working processes. It is shown that deformationinduced dislocation structures can be interpreted and analyzed within a common framework of grainsubdivision on a finer and finer scale down to the nanometer dimension, which can be reached atultrahigh strains. It is demonstrated that classical materials science and engineering principles applyfrom the largest to the smallest structural scale but also that new and unexpected structures andproperties characterize metals with structures on the scale from about 10 nm to 1 μm

    Notes: The strength of a deformed metal depends on the content of high angle boundaries, lowangle dislocation boundaries and the dislocations between the boundaries. High angle boundariescontribute by Hall-Petch strengthening, whereas for the low angle dislocation boundaries anddislocations between boundaries the strengthening is proportional to the square root of the dislocationdensity. Based on an assumption of additivity of these contributions, the flow stresses of metalsdeformed by cold rolling have been calculated successfully. In the present investigation pure Ni(99.9%) has been deformed by high pressure torsion (HPT) to von Mises strains of 0.9, 1.7, 8.7 and 12.The strength of the HPT Ni has been determined by Vickers microhardness (HV) measurements andthe microstructural parameters have been determined by transmission electron microscope (TEM) inthe longitudinal section. HPT has been compared with deformation by cold rolling and torsion basedon the structural evolution with strain and the stress-structure relationship. Based on an assumption ofa linear additivity of boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening, good agreement has beenfound between the calculated and the experimental flow stress

    Notes: Structural refinement in interstitial free (IF) steels has been obtained by three different methods: (i) deformation by cold or warm rolling, (ii) martensitic transformation and (iii) a combination of a martensitic transformation and plastic deformation. For all these processes, the refinement is discussed in terms of grain subdivision by high angle boundaries and dislocation boundaries on length scales from the micrometer level to the nanometer dimension. The characteristics of the subdividing boundaries are discussed, leading to the formulation of strength-structural relationship for IF steel in the deformed state

    Notes: TEM, Kikuchi diffraction analyses, EBSD, neutron diffraction and hardnessmeasurements have been applied in a study of commercial purity aluminum (AA1200) cold rolledto strains 2 and 4 and afterwards recovered by a heat treatment for 2h at temperatures up to 220 °C.The deformation microstructure is a lamellar structure delineated by dislocation boundaries andhigh angle boundaries ( ) parallel to the rolling plane. The macrotexture is a typical rollingtexture which is composed of individual texture components present as micrometer- andsubmicrometre-sized volumes. In the lamellar structure, correlations have been established betweenmicrostructural parameters and the local texture, showing for example that the density of high angleboundaries and the stored energy vary locally. The local variations affect the annealing behaviors ina way that some regions coarsen faster than others, leading to a recovered structure which isheterogeneous

    Notes: The effect of microstructure and texture on the flow stress anisotropy in aluminium and IF steel has been investigated. The samples are recrystallized commercial purity aluminium (AA1050) cold rolled to prestrains of 0.05, 0.11 and 0.2, and recrystallized IF steel cold rolled to a prestrain of 0.28. The flow stress anisotropy was measured by tensile testing of specimens cut along different directions in the rolling plane. Pronounced anisotropy was found in both materials in spite of weak textures. The yield stress increases with increasing angle between the tensile direction and the rolling direction at all prestrains. The effect of microstructure and texture on the flow stress anisotropy was modelled by incorporating into a full-constraint Taylor model the strengthening effect of dislocation boundaries. The modelling and experimental results agree well, leading to a discussion of effect of the microstructure and texture on the flow stress anisotropy

    Notes: Deformation of metals from medium to high strain significantly affect the deformationstructure as well as the recovery and recrystallization behaviour when deformed samples areannealed. This behaviour is illustrated for FCC metals of medium to high stacking fault energy, withemphasis on the behaviour of aluminium and aluminium alloys deformed by cold rolling to largestrain. The analysis encompasses hardness testing, EBSD and TEM. The deformationmicrostructure is a lamellar structure of dislocation boundaries and high angle boundaries where thepercentages of the latter increases to about 60-80% at large strain. The macrotexture is a typicalrolling texture, which is composed of individual texture components present as micrometre andsubmicrometre size volumes. In the lamellar structure correlations have been established betweenmicrostructural parameters and local orientations showing for example variations in stored energybetween the texture components and large variations in the spatial distributions of the high anglelamellar boundaries. Such local variations can affect the structural coarsening during recovery atlow temperature leading to significant structural difference on a local scale. The local variations inthe deformed structure can also significantly affect the structural changes taking place locally duringhigh temperature annealing thereby affecting the evolution of the structure and texture on amacroscopic scale
