Notes: The spectrum of bound states of He atoms adsorbed on Ag(110) is calculated, using an interaction potential based on effective medium theory EMT for the repulsive term A exp(−bz) and the Zaremba–Kohn form for the attractive van der Waals dispersion term. The electronic charge density of the host in the selvedge region is modeled by superimposing atomic-charge densities using the Herman–Skillman tables and the prefactor A of the repulsive term is fitted to the exact ground state energy obtained from elastic He scattering data. Comparisons are made with the bound-state spectrum extracted from the measured resonances in the He scattering data and with the results of several other models used in the current literature. An assessment of the role played by higher-order dispersion contributions to the attractive potential is also included. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mammalian and chicken-II forms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (mGnRH and cGnRH-II, respectively) have been measured simultaneously in the brain, pituitary, and peripheral terminal nerves (nasal area tissue) of adult males and females of a representative amphibian, Rana esculenta, during the annual reproductive cycle. Whereas in the male, brain concentrations of both GnRH forms showed significant reproductive status-related fluctuations, in the female brain only cGnRH-II content showed significant changes. The highest GnRH levels were recorded just prior to breeding in both sexes. In the pituitary both GnRHs were present in all seasons. In the peripheral terminal nerves, instead, only mGnRH was detected in all seasons confirming our previous immunohistochemical data. In both sexes furthermore, the brain and pituitary mGnRH levels were consistently much higher than those of cGnRH-II and there were no sex-related differences in the brain and pituitary content of GnRHs. Seasonal changes in brain GnRH levels may correlate with plasma sex steroid levels reinforcing the postulate that sex steroids affect GnRH neuronal systems.

Notes: Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS) is a well-characterized disease of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, which has also caused economic losses in marine turbot farms in the British Isles. We have previously demonstrated that turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, are susceptible to isolates of viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) that are endemic in the marine environment, highlighting a potential risk to marine aquaculture. Given the increasing interest in the intensive rearing of additional aquaculture species such as Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, and Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, this study aimed at investigating the susceptibility of these species to VHSV. Both species were found to be largely resistant to VHS following immersion challenge with a selection of 18 isolates, representing the known marine VHSV genotypes. Only one and two VHSV-associated mortalities occurred out of a total of 1710 and 1254 halibut and cod, respectively. These findings suggest that there is a low direct risk to the development of commercial cod and halibut aquaculture from the existing endemic reservoir of VHSV. This study, coupled to field observations has, however, highlighted the fact that both species can become infected with VHSV. The known adaptability of RNA viruses, together with the selection pressures associated with intensive aquaculture would thus advocate a cautious approach to VHSV surveillance within these emerging industries.

Notes: Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) was sown as an intercrop with oats (Avena sativa L.) at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 240 oats plants m−2 in May in 1999 and 2000 in Alberta, Canada. Forage yield and quality were measured at 10-d intervals between 35 and 88 d after planting (DAP). Yield is defined as the biomass above 6 cm of the soil surface. The dry-matter (DM) yield of berseem clover in sole crops increased by 5–10 g m−2 d−1 between 35 and 55 DAP and then increased by 21–28 g m−2 d−1 between 55 and 75 DAP. The DM yields of oats sown at 240 plants m−2 increased by 26–28 g m−2 d−1 over the whole period from 35 to 75 DAP. Oats were the dominant component in the intercrops, even at low densities of oats. Berseem clover grown with 60 oats plants m−2 received only 0·24 of the incident light when shading by oats peaked at 65 DAP. DM yields of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m−2 averaged 0·14–0·32 of the yields of berseem clover sole crops. Between 35 and 88 DAP in 2000, the crude protein (CP) concentration of berseem clover sole crops declined linearly from 310 to 180 g kg−1 DM, and the CP concentration of oats exhibited a quadratic response, declining from 350 g kg−1 DM at tillering to 110 g kg−1 DM at the soft dough stage. The mean CP concentration of berseem clover in intercrops with 60 oats plants m−2 was 25 g kg−1 less than in berseem clover sole crops, indicating that competition by oats reduced the CP concentration of berseem clover. At later sampling dates, CP and DM yields of intercrops with oats at 60 plants m−2 equalled those with oats at 240 plants m−2. The addition of berseem clover to oats in intercrops at 60 oats plants m−2 reduced the neutral-detergent fibre concentration by 30 g kg−1 DM compared with oats alone. Oats were very competitive as a companion crop for berseem clover. Adding berseem clover to oats increased forage quality and may provide for increased intake and digestibility of forage to support higher livestock productivity.

Notes: Annual forage yields of intercrops of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) and oats (Avena sativa L.), as affected by timing of initial harvest and sowing rate of oats, were investigated. Berseem clover was intercropped with oats at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 240 plants m−2 of oats in 1999 and 2000 in Alberta, Canada. Cutting date treatments involved initial harvest at 10-d intervals between 35 and 88 d after planting (DAP), and one or two subsequent harvests of regrowth. Total intercrop dry-matter (DM) yield averaged 12·9–13·3 t ha−1 with proportions of 0·21–0·43 of berseem clover in the forage. Treatments with an initial cut at the silage stage of oats (76 DAP in 1999, 88 DAP in 2000, at about soft-dough stage of oats) had greater yields of oats, lower yields of berseem clover, and lower proportions of berseem clover in total annual yields than treatments with an earlier initial cut. Total crude protein (CP) yield was greater with an initial cut at 65–66 DAP than with a silage-stage initial cut. With an initial cut at 35 DAP (before stem elongation of oats) or after 65 DAP (after heading of oats), yield potential of oats was sometimes reduced compared with silage-stage treatments, but this was balanced by a greater yield of berseem clover. The impact of harvest timing on total yield decreased as the proportion of berseem clover in the intercrops increased. With decreasing density of oats, DM yield of first-cut intercrops and total DM yield of oats decreased, while regrowth and total DM yields of berseem clover increased. Intercrops with oats at 60 plants m−2 had equal or greater total DM and CP yields than intercrops with 240 plants m−2 of oats. For intercrops with oats at 60 plants m−2, with initial cuts at 65–66, 75–76, or 88 DAP, yields of regrowths were 0·30–0·35, 0·16–0·26 and 0·09 of the total yield respectively. Oats–berseem clover intercrops showed potential to manipulate the pattern of annual forage yield and to provide flexibility of harvest without reducing annual yields.

Notes: Abstract High-speed videography was used to describe the initial turning movement of visually triggered escape in frogs and to compare it with the initial turn of frog prey capture behavior. These two types of turning had some general similarities, e.g. turn duration and peak velocity were positively correlated with turn angle. However, there were kinematic differences: for turns of a given angular amplitude, escape turns consistently demonstrated shorter duration and higher peak velocity than prey capture turns. There also were differences predictably matched to stimulus angles; escape turn angles were more variably related to stimulus angles. Both turning movements are believed to depend upon the optic tectum. However, given the observed differences in kinematics and spatial organization, we used lesion experiments to determine if distinct tectal efferent pathways subserve turning under each circumstance. Large unilateral lesions of the brainstem simultaneously disrupted both types of turning. However, smaller laterally placed lesions disrupted escape turning without disrupting prey capture turns. The kinematic differences in combination with the lesion results support the idea that the post-tectal circuitry for visually elicited turning movements is based upon separate descending pathways that control turning toward prey and turning away from threat.

Notes: Abstract  The bulb onion, Allium cepa L., is a diploid (2n=2x=16) plant with a huge nuclear genome. Previous genetic and cytogenetic analyses have not supported a polyploid origin for onion. We developed a low-density genetic map of morphological markers, randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPD), and restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) as a tool for onion improvement and to study the genome organization of onion. A mapping population of 58 F3 families was produced from a single F1 plant from the cross of two partially inbred lines (Brigham Yellow Globe 15-23 and Alisa Craig 43). Segregations were established for restoration of male fertility in sterile cytoplasm, complementary light-red bulb color, 14 RAPDs, 110 RFLPs revealed by 90 anonymous cDNA clones, and 2 RFLPs revealed by a cDNA clone of alliinase, the enzyme responsible for the characteristic Allium flavors. Duplicated RFLP loci were detected by 21% of the clones, of which 53% were unlinked (〉30 cM), 5% loosely linked (10–30 cM), and 42% tightly linked (〈10 cM). This duplication frequency is less than that reported for paleopolyploids but higher than for diploid species. We observed 40% dominant RFLPs, the highest yet reported among plants. Among duplicated RFLP loci, 19% segregated as two loci each with two codominant alleles, 52% segregated as one locus with codominant alleles and one locus with only a dominant fragment, and 29% segregated as two loci with only dominant fragments. We sequenced cDNAs detecting duplicated RFLPs; 63% showed homology to known gene families (e.g., chlorophyll binding proteins, ubiquitin, or RuBISCO), and 37% were unique clones showing significant homology to known genes of low-copy number or no homology to database sequences. Duplicated RFLPs showing linkage could be due to retroviral-like sequences in adjacent coding regions or intrachromosomal, as opposed to whole genome, duplications. Previous cytological analyses and this genetic map support intrachromosomal duplication as a mechanism contributing to the huge onion genome.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-eight patients with unresectable multiple liver metastases from colorectal carcinoma were treated with either hepatic artery chemotherapy (HAC) and cryotherapy (n=27) or cryotherapy alone (n=11). Follow-up survival data were summarized using Cox regression. Allowing for the effect of the pathology of the primary tumor and the preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level, those patients who did not receive HAC after cytoreduction were three times as likely to die as those given HAC (RR 3.3, 95%; CI 1.2–9.3). The estimated median survival of patients treated with cryotherapy alone was 245 days, whereas for those given more than 3 months of HAC plus cytoreduction therapy it was 570 days. It is recommended that all patients who receive cryotherapy for multiple liver metastases from colorectal rectal carcinoma be given subsequent hepatic artery chemotherapy.
