Notes: A new, phosphorescence-based optical instrument for making oxygen tension (PO2) measurements in individual vessels of microvascular preparations is described. Palladium–porphyrin compounds injected into the systemic vasculature are excited by light and the measured phosphorescence emission lifetime used to calculate intravascular PO2. Because this technique is relatively new, we have undertaken a rigorous examination of its usefulness and inherent limitations for microvascular studies. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new technique for synthesizing small batches of oxide-based ceramic and glass materials from high purity powders is described. The method uses continuous wave CO2 laser beam heating of material held on a water-cooled copper hearth. Contamination which would normally result during crucible melting is eliminated. Details of the technique are presented, and its operation and use are illustrated by results obtained in melting experiments with a-aluminum oxide, Y–Ba–Cu–O superconductor material, and the mixtures, Al2O3–SiO2, Bi2O3–B2O3, Bi2O3–CuO. Specimen masses were 0.05–1.5 g. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: ▪ Abstract: Occult primary breast carcinoma presenting as isolated ipsilateral axillary lymph node metastases in patients with normal mammograms and normal physical exams accounts for less than 1% of all breast carcinomas. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may identify the site of primary breast carcinoma and effect management of these patients. We report on eight consecutive women evaluated in our multidisciplinary clinic who had biopsy-proven metastatic adenocarcinomas to axillary lymph nodes and occult primary carcinomas. Each patient underwent MRI at 1.5 T with a volumetric fast-spoiled gradient-echo (3D FSPGR) pulse sequence before and after injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Wire localization of suspicious areas of enhancement was performed under MRI or mammography guidance followed by surgical excision. Seven (88%) of the eight normal mammograms showed dense (〉50%) breast parenchyma. In two (25%) of the eight patients, suspicious focal or regional enhancement was seen on MRI. Following wire localization and excision, pathologic exam showed an invasive ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ with invasion corresponding to the MRI enhancement in the two cases. Breast MRI can identify the primary tumor site and influence management of patients presenting with clinically and mammographically occult primary breast carcinomas. ▪

Notes: This paper is a contribution to the uses of life histories and the dialogue regarding the “standards” for their use. Through a meta-analysis of life histories in the United States since the publication of the Polish Peasant, we develop a typology to critically evaluate their methodological/theoretical practices in sociology. We find a broad range of uses of life histories in the areas of substantive focus, analysis, relationship of oral history and the subject, relationship of oral/life history to other materials, purpose of the research, and relationship of oral/life history to other phenomena. We conclude that life history methods have not had the transformative effect on sociology that they have had in other disciplines. By and large, the actual production of life histories continues to be a historical, to be characterized by abstract empiricism, to extinguish subjects, and to ignore the link between biography and history.

Notes: The usual large thrombus load encountered in acute ST-elevation myocardial infarctions increases the likelihood for slow-flow or no-reflow during percutaneous coronary intervention. The use of rotational atherectomy in this clinical scenario is usually prohibitive due to the potential for further induction of platelet activation and aggregation by the rotating burr. In this case presentation, primary percutaneous coronary intervention for an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction was performed. Due to the complex vessel geometry, pretreatment with atherectomy was mandatory with the only available atherectomy device in the laboratory: Rotablator®. This case represents the first report on the successful use of rotational coronary atherectomy in the setting of acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

Notes: The saturation surface of cassiterite, SnO2, was determined for liquids in the system K2O–Al2O3–SiO2 as a function of bulk composition and temperature. At fixed K2O/Al2O3 cassiterite solubility varies weakly with SiO2 concentration (76 to 84 mol%), temperature (1350° to 1550°C), and log (fO2) (−0.7 to −5.3). Cassiterite solubility is also approximately independent of composition in liquids with molar ratios of K2O/Al2O3 lessthan equal to 1 (peraluminous liquids). As K2O/Al2O3 increases from 1 (peralkaline liquids), however, cassiterite solubility increases steeply and approximately linearly with K2O in excess of Al2O3. It is proposed that potassium in excess of aluminum combines with Sn4+ to form quasi-molecular complexes with an effective stoichiometry of K4SnO4.

Notes: Abstract: A variant of the PC12 pheochromocytoma cell line (termed A35C) has been isolated that lacks regulated secretory organelles and several constituent proteins. Northern and Southern blot analyses suggested a block at the transcriptional level. The proprotein-converting enzyme carboxypeptidase H was synthesised in the A35C cell line but was secreted by the constitutive pathway. Transient transfection of A35C cells with cDNAs encoding the regulated secretory proteins dopamine β-hydroxylase and synaptotagmin I resulted in distinct patterns of mistargeting of these proteins. It is surprising that hybrid cells created by fusing normal PC12 cells with A35C cells exhibited the variant phenotype, suggesting that A35C cells express an inhibitory factor that represses neuroendocrine-specific gene expression.

Notes: No information is available concerning the target antigen(s) involved in drug-induced linear IgA disease. The purpose of this study was to define better drug-induced linear IgA desease by studying its immunopathological, immunoultrastructural and immunochemical characteristics in three patients. In the first patient. IgA deposits were seen in the lamina lucida. In the second and the third patients. IgA deposits were seen on each side of the lamina densa. Immunoblotting of the first patient's serum showed that IgA reacted with a protein of 230 kDa similar to the bullous pemphigoid-associated antigen 1 (BPAG 1). The second patient's serum did not react with specific bands. In the third patient IgA antibodies reacted with a protein of 97 kDa on epidermal extracts. Our findings suggest that, as in idiopathic forms, the target antigen is not unique in drug-induced linear IgA disease. In some patients, drug-induced linear IgA disease may represent an IgA class response to the BPAG 1.
