Notes: Anelastic strain recovery has been studied in SiC whisker-reinforced alumina composites following tensile creep. The magnitude of the recovered strains were ∼10−3 with 20 vol% SiC whiskers upon unloading from 74 MPa at 1673 K, while no such behavior was observed with 10 vol% SiC whiskers. A strain recovery mechanism based on Hertzian contact deformation within a percolating whisker (or particle) network is suggested, which appears to be consistent with the experimental observations. Two models (for whiskers and particles) have been developed which seem to predict the magnitude of recoverable strain reasonably well.

Notes: Abstract. Laparoscopic rectal mobilization and hypogastric arterial isolation were combined with a posterior sacrococcygectomy for the resection of a large sacrococcygeal chordoma in two patients. The laparoscopic procedure as described was uneventful in both cases. There was no postoperative morbidity associated with the laparoscopic procedure. The combination of laparoscopic pelvic dissection and radical posterior sacrococcygectomy is safe, effective, oncologically sound, and should be considered for all patients with a large proximal sacrococcygeal chordoma.

Notes: Abstract Omental and mesenteric cysts are uncommon, requiring surgical intervention when symptomatic. A report of a giant primary omental cyst successfully treated utilizing minimal-access surgical techniques is presented. The laparoscopic approach allowed complete, intact excision of the cyst, while decreasing operative morbidity and hospital stay.

Notes: Abstract. A case of laparoscopic-induced asymptomatic pneumothorax (PTX) is presented. Six hours postoperation, a chest x-ray revealed no evidence of PTX. The patient subsequently had a routine postoperation course. As the number of laparoscopic cases performed each year continues to rise, the surgeon must remain cognizant of all possible major and minor complications to keep laparoscopic surgery safe and effective.
