Notizen: There is incongruity between what business schools teach and whatbusiness organizations actually need. Hence, the criticism of businessschool graduates as "corporate burdens" incapable of functioning ascompetent managers. The discordant note of change is gripping thetraditional academy as it grapples with corporate demands to review itscurriculum (too much emphasis on teaching the things that can be taught;too much analysis; deficiencies in cross-functional integration and"soft" people skills). Thus, the persistent plea for teachingeffectiveness and linkage with the corporate world. Acquisition ofinformation and honed skills in analysis is essential but inadequate inmanagerial learning. More importantly, managerial learning meanslearning to take effective action; learning to acquire the "softskills", such as leadership, decision making, teamworking, negotiations, and communications. Action learning is one approach to management growthand development, which induces managers to focus primarily on their ownexperiences, to learn from exposure to problems and to learn from oneanother. The learning process is social; managers learn best to work inteams; managers learn by doing. Total learning for quality managementseeks to integrate the core analytical skills with the softinterpersonal skills in the make-up of the competent manager. The authorshares his own action learning experience in his pursuit of anaction-learning-focused PhD degree. Thus, it adopts a learner'sperspective to highlight the benefits of working on a real-life projectwhich is significant and meaningful. Discusses how action research andaction learning deliver a balance of knowledge and action, academicrigour and managerial relevance. The learning output is the "IntelligentCorporate Strategy" paradigm - a manifestation of the author'sconceptualization of thoughts after 12 years in the machine toolindustry, and its application to the author's organization, OKUMACorporation.

Notizen: There are many works by academics and practitioners on the need to finda sybmiotic relationship between academia and industry in the field ofmanagement development. One significant trend is "action learning" orlearning by doing. Describes initiatives pioneered by several learninginstitutions where managers learn in the workplace. Analyses totallearning for quality management as consisting of two modes of learning, maintenance learning (programmed knowledge) and innovative learning orquestioning insight.

Notizen: Wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and its composites is one of the main obstacles that limit the longevity of total joint replacements. Compression molded UHMWPE/quartz composites with organosiloxane as a cross-linking agent for UHMWPE matrix, were tested in nanoindentation and nanowear. The nanomechanical properties of the composite were examined in the light of nanoindentation experiments performed with a diamond tip of nominal radius of curvature of about 150 nm under conditions of various contact loads. Results from nanowear tests show that, in addition to the nanohardness and elastic modulus, the crosslinking procedure has the most pronounced effect on the tribological properties and at 0.5 phr organosiloxane, composites reache their maximum nanowear resistance. These findings are in agreement with the results of conventional mechanical and wear tests performed on these materials

Notizen: In this paper, the superplastic deformation behaviour of a pulse electrodeposited Ni-SiCnanocomposite was further studied at temperatures ranging from 330 to 530oC. It was found thatoptimum temperature of the composite was 450oC, and the shape of its flow stress vs strain ratecurves is similar to that of conventional superplastic materials. The microstructures of the compositebefore and after deformation were examined using SEM and TEM. Dislocations and deformationtwinning were observed in the deformed samples, and there was significant grain growth duringdeformation. The deformation mechanisms were also discussed in the paper based on theexperimental findings

Notizen: The compressive deformation behavior of as-cast Zr55.9Cu18.6Ta8Al7.5Ni10 Bulk MetallicGlass (BMG) composite with micro-scale particles of Ta-rich solid solution embedded in anamorphous matrix was investigated in the supercooled liquid region. It was found that the apparentviscosity of the BMG is dependent on temperature and strain rate. A deviation from a Newtonianbehavior was observed at high strain rate and low temperature. The experimental results can bedescribed by a master curve based on a stretched exponential function and the free volume theory. Thestructural state and the thermal ability of the BMG composite after deformation are also discussed inthe paper
