Notes: We have fabricated a metal-semiconductor-metal Schottky photodetector on a semi-insulating InP substrate using a nominally lattice-matched In0.52Al0.48As/In0.53(GaxAl1−x)0.47As (graded)/In0.53Ga0.47As structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. On average the graded quaternary layer enhanced the responsivity by about 35% compared to an identical device without the graded region, reaching a maximum of 0.45 A/W at 10 V applied bias. The associated dark current was 95 nA; the dark capacitance was 90 fF. High-speed measurements with a gain-switched 1.3 μm laser diode demonstrated an instrumentation-limited impulse response of 50 ps.

Notes: A new preparation of amethocaine in the form of a self-adhesive patch, designed to provide topical cutaneous anaesthesia prior to venous cannulation, was evaluated in an open study of 189 children. The new preparation of amethocaine was in place for a mean time of 48 min (SD 3.9). Eighty percent of patients had a satisfactory degree of analgesia for venous cannulation. Nine percent of patients experienced moderate pain and 11% experienced severe pain during venous cannulation. In 26% of patients there was slight (24%) or moderate (2%) erythema at the site of application, and in 5% slight oedema was noted at the site of application. Eight percent of patients had slight itching and 1% had moderate itching at the site of application. There was a clinical impression that venous dilatation made cannulation easier than with EM LA cream. These results suggest that this convenient preparation of amethocaine is highly effective at providing adequate topical cutaneous anaesthesia with a short onset time and a low incidence of minor side effects with no evidence of systemic toxicity.

Notes: Pulmonary function tests were performed in 22 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Measurements were made before, 24h after, and 6 weeks after operation (12 patients). At 24 h postoperatively there were significant decreases in forced expiratory volume in 1 s, vital capacity, functional residual capacity and total lung capacity to 75% (p 〈 0.001), 73% (p 〈 0.001), 92% (p = 0.002) and 83% (p 〈 0.001) of pre-operative values respectively. Inspiratory and expiratory mouth pressures decreased to 66% (p 〈 0.001) of pre-operative values respectively. Inspiratory and expiratory mouth pressures decreased to 66% (9 〈 0.001) adn 63% (p 〈 0.001) of the pre-operative pressures respectively. There was a reduction in Pao2 (p 〈 0.01) and an increase in alveolar-arterial gradient (p 〈 0.001) but no change in Paco2 at 24 h. The pulmonary function tests measured in the patients who returned after 6 weeks had returned to pre-operative values.

Notes: Field isolates (n = 144) of the wheat take-all fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) were tested for sensitivity to silthiofam, a take-all-specific fungicide used as a seed treatment, and identified as A- or B-type by PCR–RFLP analysis of nuclear rDNA. A possible association was identified between polymorphisms in ITS2 of the nuclear rDNA and sensitivity to silthiofam. A Ggt-specific PCR assay was developed which simultaneously identified isolates of Ggt as A- or B-type, based on the polymorphisms in the nuclear rDNA. A highly significant correlation between Ggt type using the PCR assay and sensitivity to silthiofam was demonstrated in a collection of 358 isolates from three field experiments designed to test the effects of seed-treatment fungicides on take-all and Ggt populations in winter wheat. In one experiment the percentages of silthiofam-sensitive and B-type isolates were significantly less in populations from plots sown with silthiofam-treated seed in two consecutive years than in populations from plots sown with nontreated seed. However, silthiofam still provided a significant amount of control of take-all. The natural occurrence of fungicide-insensitive isolates, up to about 30% in soils in which the fungicide had never been used, is unusual. The new PCR assay provides a useful tool for studying the population structure of Ggt, and may provide a novel method for assessing the incidence of insensitivity to silthiofam (the target site for which has not yet been identified) in field populations of Ggt.

Notes: [Auszug] NINETEEN eighty nine and 1990 have been marked by a striking contrast in the manner in which the bicentenaries of two related and singularly French happenings have been commemorated. The first - the Revolution of 1789 - was celebrated with a pageant of festivities which culminated in a Parisian ...

Notes: [Auszug] Subducting slabs provide the main driving force for plate motion and flow in the Earth’s mantle, and geodynamic, seismic and geochemical studies offer insight into slab dynamics and subduction-induced flow. Most previous geodynamic studies treat subduction zones as either infinite in ...

Notes: Abstract We investigate the fluctuations inN α (R), the number of lattice pointsn∈Z 2 inside a circle of radiusR centered at a fixed point α∈[0, 1)2. Assuming thatR is smoothly (e.g., uniformly) distributed on a segment 0≦R≦T, we prove that the random variable $$\frac{{N_\alpha (R) - \pi R^2 }}{{\sqrt R }}$$ has a limit distribution asT→∞ (independent of the distribution ofR), which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. The densityp α (x) is an entire function ofx which decays, for realx, faster than exp(−|x|4−ε). We also obtain a lower bound on the distribution function $$P_\alpha (x) = \int_{ - \infty }^x {p_\alpha (y)} dy$$ which shows thatP α (−x) and 1−P α (x) decay whenx→∞ not faster than exp(−x 4+ε). Numerical studies show that the profile of the densityp α (x) can be very different for different α. For instance, it can be both unimodal and bimodal. We show that $$\int_{ - \infty }^\infty {xp_\alpha (x)} dx = 0$$ , and the variance $$D_\alpha = \int_{ - \infty }^\infty {x^2 p_\alpha (x)} dx$$ depends continuously on α. However, the partial derivatives ofD α are infinite at every rational point α∈Q 2, soD α is analytic nowhere.

Notes: Abstract A neonate is described with a lethal sclerosing bone dysplasia associated with prenatal fractures and craniofacial abnormalities including microcephaly, exophthalmos, hypoplastic nose and mid-face, small jaw and nodular hyperplasia of the gums. Parental consanguinity suggests that an autosomal recessive mutation is the likely aetiology.
