Notes: Abstract To study the molting behavior of the spiny lobster, electrical activity of the heart, stomach and skeletal muscles was recorded using in-dwelling electrodes. For 1–2 h before molting the heart rate gradually increases. At the same time shorter trains of stomach burst discharges frequently occur. The heart rate then declines and burst discharges of skeletal muscles begin. The skeletal bursts are regularly spaced (10–15 s intervals). A peristalsis pattern of short and long bursts continues for 10–20 min and is terminated by a few bursts corresponding to abdominal flips. The short skeletal burst is followed by a drop in heart rate. Bioassay using the isolated heart suggests that at the final stage of molting the blood contains some substance(s) which inhibit heart beat.

Notes: The tension-tension fatigue tests for SiC/SiC composites were performed under theconditions that the maximum load Pmax was 80-90% to the fracture load of the tensile tests and thestress ratio was Rσ = 0.5. The composites exhibited a width in stress-strain hysteresis loop underone load cycling. In some cases the mean strain εmean gradually increase with increasing in numberof cycles. These variations would reflect the developments of the fatigue damage at the fiber/matrixinterface during the cyclic loading process. The pull-out lengths of the fibers for the fatigued- andnot fatigued-specimens were measured through the SEM observations after the tensile test. In allmaterials, the average pull-out length of fibers in fatigued material was larger than in not fatiguedmaterial because the cyclic loading affected on the fiber/matrix interfacial strength
