Notes:
The purpose of this review was to integrate recent evidence supporting the reliability of thoracic impedance plethysmography as an estimator of cardiodynamic function. Reports regarding the development of the method for NASA, and numerous investigations comparing impedance cardiography to indicator dilution and other methods were discussed. It was concluded that impedance cardiography provides a reliable intra-subject estimation of relative changes in stroke volume and cardiac output. However, the reliability of the technique was found to depend greatly upon its use within a limited range of applications. Myocardial contractility and cardiopathology were also considered.
