Notes: A new design for radiation-sensing field-effect transistors (RADFETs) is presented, involving the use of very thick silicon nitride layers deposited on top of a high-quality thermal silicon dioxide. In contrast to previous RADFET fabrication procedures, no attempt was made to introduce hole traps into the thermal oxide. Instead the trapping layer at the nitride oxide interface was used to store the positive charge which forms the basis for operation of the RADFET. Data is presented which shows hole transport in the thermal oxide. Models explaining the field dependence of the response and the saturation behavior of the dual dielectric device are given. These RADFETs are more stable than any previously described in the literature and have a sensitivity of 86 μV/rad dose at room temperature.

Notes: Over the past three years, the total TMX-U diagnostic data base has grown to exceed 10 Mbytes from over 1300 channels; roughly triple the originally designed size. This acquisition and processing load has resulted in an experiment repetition rate exceeding 10 min per shot using the five original Hewlett–Packard HP-1000 computers with their shared disks. Our new diagnostics tend to be multichannel instruments, which, in our environment, can be more easily managed using local computers. For this purpose, we are using HP series 9000 computers for instrument control, data acquisition, and analysis. Fourteen such systems are operational with processed format output exchanged via a shared resource manager. We are presently implementing the necessary hardware and software changes to create a local area network allowing us to combine the data from these systems with our main data archive. The expansion of our diagnostic system using the parallel acquisition and processing concept allows us to increase our data base with a minimum of impact on the experimental repetition rate.

Notes: A commercial database software package has been used to create several databases and tools that assist and enhance the ability of experimental physicists to analyze data from the Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade (TMX-U) experiment. This software runs on a DEC-20 computer in M-Divisions's User Service Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where data can be analyzed off line from the main TMX-U acquisition computers. When combined with interactive data analysis programs, these tools provide the capability to do batch-style processing or interactive data analysis on the computers in the USC or the supercomputers of the National Magnetic Fusion Energy Computer Center (NMFECC) in addition to the normal processing done by the TMX-U acquisition system. One database tool provides highly reduced data for searching and correlation analysis of several diagnostic signals within a single shot or over many shots. A second database tool provides retrieval and storage of unreduced data for use in detailed analysis of one or more diagnostic signals. We will show how these database tools form the core of an evolving off-line data analysis environment on the USC computers.

Notes: The aim of this study was to describe morphological differences between the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the canine elbow joint. Forty forelimbs of 22 dogs (adult German shepherd dogs and shepherd mongrels) were dissected. The length and width of defined segments of the ligaments (i. e. total length, areas of origin and insertion, ‘free part’, ‘humeral part’, ‘antebrachial part’) were measured in extension (160°) and flexion (30°). Statistical analyses of the data were performed using the data analysis software SAS 8.0. In addition the collateral ligaments of ten forelimbs of five shepherd mongrels were studied histologically. The LCL differs from the MCL in the following morphological items: a) the areas of origin and insertion are larger and in consequence the ‘free part’ of the lateral ligament is shorter; b) the caudal crus of the LCL is fan-shaped with a broad insertion area at the ulna whereas the caudal crus of the MCL remains slim; c) in the LCL the ‘humeral part’ varies in length depending on extended or flexed position of the joint, which is due to the spiral shape of the capitulum humeri; d) the microscopical structure of the LCL is organized less tightly; the collagen fibre bundles cross in varying angles. Referring to these details the LCL seems to allow and to limit a slight rotation of the forearm when the elbow joint is extremely flexed.

Notes: In the eccrine glands of the digital pads of the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor), ultrastructural localization of glycoproteins with various saccharide residues was studied using preferably lectin cytochemical methods. Secretory granules observed in the dark cells exhibited glycoproteins with different terminal sugars (α-d-mannose, β-d-galactose, β-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine and sialic acid). The cytoplasm of the clear cells contained numerous glycogen particles. Several sugars were also detectable in the surface coat of the plasma membrane of the secretory cells. The results obtained could be helpful in understanding secretion production and cell related secretion functions of the eccrine glands of the raccoon digital foot pads.

Notes: Efficient and well-regulated intercellular communication is essential to organize the activities of the different cell populations involved during growth and concomitant structural maturation of the skeleton. For direct cell-cell communication gap junctions composed of connexins (Cx) are present. So far 21 Cx types have been identified in mammals, which differ in molecular permeability as well as tissue expression pattern. To characterize the Cx distribution in the developing canine skeleton, samples from humerus, scapula and lumbar vertebrae of Beagle dogs aged 1.5, 3, 4.5 months and 1.5 years were fixed in Bouin's solution, decalcified with 25% EDTA and embedded in paraffin wax. Using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, the expression of Cx 26, 30, 31, 32, 43, and 45 was studied in bone tissue plus associated epiphyseal and growth plate cartilage. Of all bone cells, osteoblasts showed the largest Cx expression repertoire: they were positive for Cx 26, 30, 32 and 43. After transformation into bone lining cells Cx43 expression was lost while in osteocytes only Cx 26 and 32 was detected. A wide variety of Cx reactions was also found in osteoclasts: Cx 26, 30, 32, and 43. In contrast, chondrocytes showed a much more restricted Cx expression pattern. Positive reactions were only seen in hypertrophic chondrocytes of epiphyseal cartilage (Cx 26, 31, 32) and in the proliferative (Cx32) and hypertrophic zone (Cx 26 and 32) of growth plate cartilage. Additionally, Cx31 was strongly expressed in the cellular layer of the periosteum covering areas of intensive bone modelling in the puppies. Age- and microlocation-dependent variations in expression and/or staining intensity were also observed in the other Cx types. These results demonstrated that canine bone cells are capable of synthesizing a wide variety of Cx types during skeletal development, thus propagating different cellular signals via gap junctions in a differentially regulated and requirement orientated manner.

Notes: The object of this double-blind, multicentre study was to compare duodenal ulcer healing rates after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment with either 20 mg omeprazole o.m. or 150 mg ranitidine b.d. One hundred and eighty-one patients were randomized: 91 received omeprazole and 90 received ranitidine. In a per protocol analysis at 2 weeks, 63% of the patients were healed on omeprazole and 65% of the patients were healed on ranitidine (N.S.); at 4 weeks 91% were healed in the omeprazole group and 96% were healed in the ranitidine group. There were no differences in ulcer symptom relief between the two groups. There were no significant changes in laboratory values in either of the groups. Adverse events were few and mainly mild and transient. We conclude that both omeprazole (20 mg o.m.) and ranitidine (150 mg b.d.) result in rapid, ulcer healing rates.

Notes: Abstract The relative yield of high transverse momentum protons measured inpp interctions at the CERN ISR is calculated in the framework of simple parton models. Whereas models based exclusively on quark and gluon scattering fail to describe the data, the hypothesis of diquark scattering provides a quantitative understanding of the measured dependences on transverse momentum, polar angle, and centre-of-mass energy. Different assumptions on diquark structure functions are tested.
