Notizen: A numerical technique has been used to solve the carrier transport equations for several (Hg,Cd)Te photodiode configurations, namely n+pp+, n+np, and pin. Of particular interest are the fundamental recombination mechanisms of radiative and Auger. Results clearly demonstrate the importance of Auger type 1 and 7 mechanisms on the n and p sides of the junction, respectively, in limiting carrier lifetimes. For example, it was found that for defect-free Hg1−xCdxTe alloys with x=0.2 and hole concentration less than 4×1014 cm−3 adjacent to the depletion region, the Auger recombination rate can be reduced below the radiative rate. An analysis of the spatial dependence of the electron mobility shows that the presence of high carrier concentrations and electric field strengths can reduce the mobility and consequently have an effect on the sensitivity and temporal response of the photodiode.

Notizen: The particle velocity distribution on the surface of AT-cut quartz crystals oscillating in liquid is investigated. The distribution, amplitude, and direction of surface motion are determined. This study improves the understanding of the oscillation characteristics of quartz crystals in solution.

Notizen: We provide a response to Beech's review of The Wages of Wins: Taking Measure of the Many Myths in Modern Sport in this journal. Specifically we are responding to three misinterpretations and/or misstatements in the book review. At the end of each section we explain the process in which we reach our conclusions and where we differ with the reviewer's ascertations.

Notizen: The postoperative analgesic management of a patient who was intolerant of morphine and pethidine is described. An epidural infusion of fentanyl up to 1 μg/kg/hour was ineffective for analgesia in the first 18 hours. Subsequently. 50-μg boluses and an infusion of 0.5 μg/kg/hour sufentanil provided satisfactory analgesia with minimal side effects for 28 hours.

Notizen: A theoretical investigation has been made of the acoustical properties of symmetrical multilayer structures. Acoustic symmetric multilayers (ASMs) exhibit behavior analogous to that of optical symmetric multilayers. For a three-layer ASM, a range of effective acoustic impedances is possible merely by varying the thickness of the middle layer for a given frequency. This has the advantage that one can design an antireflection coating for virtually any substrate impedance. Some illustrative examples are given.

Notizen: Abstract Breaks and discontinuities in Arrhenius plots of physiological and physical properties of thylakoids are not diagnostic of thermotropic lipid phase transitions of the membrane. Bulk lipid transitions, as first inferred by the membrane phase transition hypothesis, do not occur in any higher plant at chilling temperatures. Solidification of some varying, but always minor, fraction of the total membrane lipid does take place. However, the presence of minor domains of solid thylakoid membrane lipid at chilling temperatures is not unique to chilling sensitive plants but is also found in tolerant species. Minor solidification may in some plants, or groups of plants, be controlled by the specific molecular species of phosphatidylglycerol only recently investigated. In plants containing little, or no, phosphatidylglycerol with this positional distribution of fatty acids, other yet unknown constituents of the membrane must fill a similar function, since DSC thermograms indicate minor solidification also in isolated, unperturbed thylakoids from chilling tolerant species. However, chilling induced phase transitions, or other perturbations, of the thylakoid membrane are not the reason for the chilling lability of net photosynthesis in the intact plant. This conclusion follows from detailed comparison between photosynthetic membranes isolated from prechilled plants and the effects of chilling exposure on CO2 fixation of the whole plant. Damage at the level of the thylakoid membrane does occur, although not to the extent where it can account for the proportionally much larger damage to CO2 fixation.

Notizen: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a filamentous ascomycete phytopathogen able to infect an extremely wide range of cultivated plants. Our previous studies have shown that increases in cAMP levels result in the impairment of the development of the sclerotium, a highly differentiated structure important in the disease cycle of this fungus. cAMP also inhibits the activation of a S. sclerotiorum mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), which we have previously shown to be required for sclerotial maturation; thus cAMP-mediated sclerotial inhibition is modulated through MAPK. However, the mechanism(s) by which cAMP inhibits MAPK remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that a protein kinase A (PKA)-independent signalling pathway probably mediates MAPK inhibition by cAMP. Expression of a dominant negative form of Ras, an upstream activator of the MAPK pathway, also inhibited sclerotial development and MAPK activation, suggesting that a conserved Ras/MAPK pathway is required for sclerotial development. Evidence from bacterial toxins that specifically inhibit the activity of small GTPases, suggested that Rap-1 or Ras is involved in cAMP action. The Rap-1 inhibitor, GGTI-298, restored MAPK activation in the presence of cAMP, further suggesting that Rap-1 is responsible for cAMP-dependent MAPK inhibition. Importantly, inhibition of Rap-1 is able to restore sclerotial development blocked by cAMP. Our results suggest a novel mechanism involving the requirement of Ras/MAPK pathway for sclerotial development that is negatively regulated by a PKA-independent cAMP signalling pathway. Cross-talk between these two pathways is mediated by Rap-1.
