Notes: The effects of quisqualic acid lesions of the nucleus basalis magnocellularis on short-term memory capacities of the rat have been investigated using the delayed matching and non-matching to position tasks. The lesions do not disrupt performance of either task by pretrained animals, but do disrupt the ability to acquire the non-matching contingency, and to reverse to the non-matching task when trained on the matching task. The unidirectional nature of the reversal deficit has been replicated. The generalized disruption of performance of either task by the muscarinic antagonist scopolamine was comparable in lesioned and control rats. The lesions were associated with extensive loss of acetylcholinesterase staining in the basal forebrain and in the neocortex, and 55% depletions of choline acetyltransferase activity in the neocortex but not in the hippocampus. These observations demonstrate that the cholinergic projection from nucleus basalis to the neocortex is not critical for normal short-term memory, but that lesions involving this system do disrupt specific types of conditional discrimination learning.

Notes: Purpose - To evaluate the chances of success for Auchan in Russia, and draw conclusions for retail internationalisation theory. Design/methodology/approach - Provides a comprehensive analysis of the Russian retail landscape and emerging patterns of consumption, especially in the capital Moscow. Findings - The success of Auchan's Russian venture will depend on the extent to which the retailer is able to leverage its three sources of competitive advantage in its domestic market, namely the hypermarket concept, the channel mix, and the environmental context. This in turn will be a function of its ability to exploit its retail marketing skills, distribution abilities, unique retail formula, strong retail brand, or a combination of these. Research limitations/implications - The paper is not built on empirical data, but is speculative. Originality/value - The paper's primary value lies in the call which it contains for a more eclectic conceptual framework underpinning retail internationalisation theory. Such a framework would reflect the importance of a firm's capital structure, and also pay greater attention to organisational dynamics. Attention to these issues would enable researchers to reflect more accurately the reality of the retail internationalisation process in emerging markets.

Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to assess the future development of the transport sector in Europe. Design/methodology/approach - Drawing on published sources of information and some expert views, the paper considers trends, drivers of change, possible scenarios and policy issues. Findings - Transport demand for passengers and goods has grown consistently in the past and is expected to continue to do so in the future. Existing policies are unlikely to modify this trend or alleviate existing problems. Research limitations/implicaions - The paper is based on existing sources. Practical implications - Decisions in a wide range of policy fields have implications for transport, which are seldom considered. Originality/value - Questions the sustainability of continuing growth in transport demand and the adequacy of current policy.

Notes: In this paper it is argued that dividend policy is not determined as a residual, but rather that firms adopt independent dividend and investment policies. Empirical evidence, based on a questionnaire survey, supports this view. Independent dividend and investment policies are possible because debt finance is usually raised in sufficient quantities to accommodate the financial demands created by dividend and investment decisions.

Notes: Abstract The proteinases of three species of Leishmania have been analysed by electrophoresis. Amastigotes of L. mexicana mexicana have several high-activity, low-Mr cysteine proteinases which are absent from log-phase promastigotes of L. m. mexicana and from all developmental stages of the other species analysed (L. donovani and L. major). Low-activity, low-Mr proteinases were present in populations of stationary-phase promastigotes of L. m. mexicana. All three species of Leishmania had higher Mr proteinases, a number of which showed developmental regulation, some of them being stage-specific. Significantly, at all stages of the life cycle in all three species a 68-kDa proteinase was apparent. In its size, sensitivity to inhibitors and ability to bind concanavalin A-agarose, this resembles the major surface protein thought to be present in all Leishmania species and which has recently been reported to possess proteinase activity in L. major promastigotes.

Notes: Summary Sayur asin is a fermented mustard cabbage product of Indonesia. The cabbage is fermented naturally in the presence of brined water taken from boiled rice. Fermentation was characterized by a sequential growth of the lactic acid bacteria, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus confusus, Lactobacillus curvatus, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Lactobacillus plantarum. Starch degrading species of Bacillus, Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium exhibited limited growth during the first day of fermentation. The yeasts, Candida sake and Candida guilliermondii contributed to the fermentation. Lactic acid, acetic acid, succinic acid, ethanol and glycerol were products of fermentation. Glucose, generated by the degradation of rice starch and maltose, was metabolized by the species that grew.

Notes: Abstract A dose of 0.3 μg/kg body weight of ceruletide was assessed for its effect on gallbladder contraction and bile duct delineation following oral cholecystography. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain sometimes occurred after ceruletide. No relationship was found after ceruletide administration between the radiologic appearances of the biliary tract and reproduction of the patients' biliary-type symptoms. Ceruletide cholecystography is regarded as an inaccurate investigation of biliary tract function.
