    Notes: The d bands for RCo5, R2Co17, and R6Mn23 compounds are formulated by Deegan's prescription and the formulas of Slater and Koster. The d-f elements for these energy bands derived by Lendi are taken into account. The spin polarization of the f bands are investigated. The obtained result explains the experimental result by taking into account the feeble exchange splitting in 4f bands. Additionally, the magnetic moment of rare earths is calculated on the basis of the band model and the calculated result is compared with gJ. It is found that in these compounds the spin polarization is saturated and the moments are much the same as gJ.

    Notes: Sphingosine kinase (SPHK) is known to exert an anti-apoptic role in various cells and cell lines. We previously reported that human brain is rich in SPHK1 (Murate et al. 2001). After showing a high expression of SPHK1 in rat brain, we examined the gene expression mechanism using nerve growth factor (NGF) -stimulated rat PC12 cells. With RT–PCR, we found that both rat brain and PC12 utilized exon 1d mostly out of eight untranslated first exons. NGF induced an increase in SPHK enzyme activity and protein about double those in PC12 cells, and NGF-induced SPHK1 mRNA was three times higher than in the control. The minimal 5′ promoter was determined, and TrkA specific inhibitor K252a inhibited the NGF-induced promoter activity of SPHK1. The truncation or mutation of putative transcription factor-binding motifs revealed that one specificity protein 1 (Sp1) binding motif of the 5′ region of exon 1d is prerequisite. Electrophoresis mobility shift assay confirmed the promoter analysis, indicating increased Sp1 protein binding to this motif after NGF treatment. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay also showed the binding of Sp1 and the promoter region in vivo. These results suggest the signal transduction pathway from NGF receptor TrkA to transcription factor Sp1 protein binding to the promoter Sp1-like motif in NGF-induced rat SPHK1 gene expression.

    Notes: Abstract The agglomeration process of MgO powder derived from Mg (OH)2 was investigated at fixed temperatures of 600, 800, 900 and 1200° C; these temperatures were chosen as representative of four regions, i.e. below 600° C, 650 to 850° C, 850 to 1050°C and 1050 to 1200° C previously reported. At 600° C, coherent crystallites coalesced within the heating time of 60 min; on further heating till 300 min, the primary particles which consisted of crystallites grew rapidly. The original Mg (OH)2 framework or pseudomorphs, composed of minute crystallites and primary particles, still remained in the powder. At 800° C, the pseudomorphs had disintegrated into fragments. The crystallite growth and primary particle growth were accelerated with increasing the heating times beyond 60 min. At 900° C, a further fragmentation of agglomerates occurred with increasing the heating times; the crystallite and primary particle growth in fragments brought about the pore coalescence. At 1200° C, the crystallite and primary particle growth proceeded with the coarsening of pores; on heating beyond 240 min, the crystallites and primary particles grew rapidly due to the entrapment of pores within them.
