    Notes: Strained-layer structures consisting of ∼30–35 nm Si1−xGex (x=0.16–0.29) and 33 nm Si deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on a (100)Si substrate have been amorphized by ion implantation at 40 K with 120 keV As+. Rutherford backscattering/channeling measurements using 2 MeV He+ ions have been used to measure the thickness of the amorphous layer and monitor the subsequent epitaxial regrowth occurring as a result of annealing at 560–600 °C. Angular scans across the {110} planar channels indicate that the initial crystallinity and strain was recovered for x=0.16; however, for x=0.29 crystal quality was greatly reduced and the coherency at the substrate-alloy layer interface was destroyed.

    Notes: Planar {110} channeling measurements with 1–2-MeV He+ ions have been used to investigate strained-layer structures of (100) GaAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs with x=0.07–0.17. Beam-steering effects in the surface GaAs layer are observed to have a major influence on {110} planar angular scans carried out in the InxGa1−xAs layers resulting generally in a double or more complex-shaped angular dip. A simple computer simulation has been developed which determines the main features of the experimental angular scan data. Comparison of simulation and experimental data allows a reasonable determination of the kink angle θK between the {110} planes for the surface GaAs and underlying strained layer. Only in limiting cases is it possible to unequivocally determine θK from the experimental data alone. They are as follows: (i) when θK=0; (ii) θK〉2ψ pc (ψ pc is the critical angle for {110} planar channeling); and (iii) when the thickness t of the top layer is thin (t(very-much-less-than)2d/ψ pc, where d is the {110} interplanar spacing).

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to define the psychometric properties of a simulation-based assessment of anaesthetists. Twenty-one anaesthetic trainees took part in three highly standardised simulations of anaesthetic emergencies. Scenarios were videotaped and rated independently by four judges. Trainees also assessed their own performance in the simulations. Results were analysed using generalisability theory to determine the influence of subject, case and judge on the variance in judges' scores and to determine the number of cases and judges required to produce a reliable result. Self-assessed scores were compared to the mean score of the judges. The results suggest that 12–15 cases are required to rank trainees reliably on their ability to manage simulated crises. Greater reliability is gained by increasing the number of cases than by increasing the number of judges. There was modest but significant correlation between self-assessed scores and external assessors' scores (rho = 0.321; p = 0.01). At the lower levels of performance, trainees consistently overrated their performance compared to those performing at higher levels (p = 0.0001).

    Notes: Abstract A large synthesis radio telescope is under construction in Australia at a cost of $A 30.7million. In comprises a 6 km-long ‘compact array’ of 22 m antenna at Culgoora and a ‘long baseline array’ of 319 km, achieved by adding another 22 m antenna near Coonabarabran and the existing 64 m antennae at Parkes. On occasion it will be possible to use this arry with one of the deep space network antennas at Tidbinbilla to achieve a baseline of 580 km. The arrays have been designed to provide high-resolution radio images over a wide field with high-dynamic range plus good polarization and spectral line performance. The operating frequency range is from about 327 MHz to over 50 GHz.

    Notes: Abstract 2.6 mm carbon monoxide and 21 cm hydrogen line observations of the Galaxy define six directions where gas is seen tangentially along a spiral feature and four directions where extended structures cross theR=R 0 circle. These directions provide a geometrical framework for any spiral structure pattern. Also simple equations are derived to define the normalized radiusR/R 0 of gas with a particular radial velocity in terms of the observed tangential velocity of gas with the sameR/R 0=sinl T, without specific knowledge of ω(R), ω0 orR 0.
